to think that staying in the UK is NOT a holiday

I'm sick of people patronising me. Next week I'm going to Peppa Pig World (and a car museum and assorted rubbishy British crappy places) for my daughters 2nd birthday and my 30th. Friends who have returned from hot countries have said things like, "Oh you must be really looking forward to it" and "Your jollies are soon!" (jollies = holidays).

FFS! Peppa Pig World is NOT a holiday!! What's worse is that my husband really believes that this is a fucking holiday. My idea of a holiday is:

Different culture.
Different country.
Nice weather is a bonus.

Whereas we'll be pushing a pram around in the rain for a week. I see it more as a 'trip' and no it's not semantics. And yes I'm PMSing.

we go next week for our holiday to rented accommodation on the West Coast of Scotland. Pretty guarenteed to piss down, given current weather i suppose. However, we can't afford flights/overseas so we'll make the best of it and enjoy being somewhere different. As another poster said, we try and get a decent cottage so if we are stuck in , there is room for everyone to spread out which is a holiday in itself given our normal accommodation.
Laughing at the poster way up thread who couldn't wait until DCs were 18 and she could choose her own holiday - we are taking DD1 who is 21, DD2 who is 18, DD2s friend who is 20, nephew who is 15 and 10 year old DS!!
some bloody holiday with that crew Grin

HecateHarshPants · 07/07/2012 09:42

You're right, Lady. Holidays ARE what you make them.

Best holiday I ever had was one to bloody butlins when I was a kid. Was a 'summer' much like this one and the damn place got flooded. I was wading through water to my knees. Didn't see a ray of sun all week. Nearly drowned every time you set foot outside. Grin

Best holiday I've ever had!

theinets · 07/07/2012 09:49

The op is lucky to have a holiday anywhere. The UK is so varied. I am seld employed and don't get paid holidays so mine are v expensive. Normally take 5 days off a year. No work. No pay . Unsurprisingly holidays are rare and UK based.

bleedingheart · 07/07/2012 09:54

I agree with catsmother.

Presumably you were involved in agreeing and booking this holiday so why moan now? If it rains you'll find something else to do.
I wouldn't go away with a 6 month old and 2 year old to be honest as it just seems like hassle to me but if you are, make the most of it! I hope it doesn't rain and exceeds your expectations.

LadyBeagleEyes · 07/07/2012 09:57

Demented, if you'd been in the (North) west highlands over the last couple of weeks you'd have had brilliant weather. We even have a water shortage as we've had so little rain Grin.

Acumenoop · 07/07/2012 09:57

Diddums.

I've not been on holiday since 2001. Anywhere.

Mrsjay · 07/07/2012 09:58

well I only seem to have been on 4 real holidays that is 1 a decade YABU and you have high expectations of holidays,

Mrsjay · 07/07/2012 09:59

and OP you are patronising everybody dont go to peppa pig world go somewhere on your own with culture you sound a right grumpy cow

Chandon · 07/07/2012 10:00

Don't go to peppa pig world!

For a 2 year old, a birthday can consist of a cupcake, a sweet and a present, and maybe a few friends over to play.

She will not remember it at 2. She'd be just as happy for a bit in a playground/trip to the pool.

Why not book something YOU would enjoy? Something involving a babysitter and cocktails?

No need to be a slave-to-your-child-holiday-martyr.

We have always taken our kids on the sort of hols WE like, and they have enjoyed them! They still talk about a 2 star hotel we stayed in, in the rain, as teh best holiday ever as it had hoy choc making facility in the room, and new biscuits every day, and a (grubby little) pool!

MrsRobertDuvallHasRosacea · 07/07/2012 10:02

Family holidays are hell for us and so we don't do them anymore.
Dh and ds go off for 3 weeks at christmas to Oz, dd and I stay here.

I like going away on my own, or with a friend, where I don't have to be respinsile or think aout anyone else.

We have done our share of Welsh holidays, albeit in a beautiful place, but still shit when it rains and doesn't get above 14 degrees in August. I don't do cagoules Grin

MrsRobertDuvallHasRosacea · 07/07/2012 10:02

Responible.
Though I quite like the word respinsile.

MrsRobertDuvallHasRosacea · 07/07/2012 10:03

I give up [ smile]

inabeautifulplace · 07/07/2012 10:05

I agree with the sentiment above. You will have a terrible time if you're constantly moaning. There's loads of really interesting things to do in that area. And if you're only interested in lying down somewhere hot and sandy, visit a sauna with a bag of sand!

Seriously though, WTF is it with some people in this country and the weather. You lot need to learn to embrace inclement weather and embrace the modern era, where we have developed waterproof clothing. Evolution has also gifted us with waterproof skin... There is something remarkably character building about horizontal hail at the top of a lakeland pass :)

VolAuVent · 07/07/2012 10:09

All my childhood holidays were in the UK.

VolAuVent · 07/07/2012 10:11

... and no I don't want a medal, I'm just saying that it would never have occurred to me that they weren't "real" holidays Confused

Sabriel · 07/07/2012 10:16

We've just come back from our holiday - a long weekend in Lowestoft on a daily mail £15 caravan park. We trooped round all the locations from Grandpa in my Pocket for 5 yo DD, braved an incredibly windy pier and sat on a freezing cold beach while she dug in the sand. We took our 22 yo DS too and he and his sister fought the whole time. But we went swimming, joined in the party dances in the evening, went to places we'd never seen before. It was a holiday and we all enjoyed it.

A couple of years ago we went to Flamingoland for my birthday!

We tried a holiday in Gran Canaria when DD was 2 and we hated it. Nothing to do (we don't do lying on the beach sunbathing) and nowhere to go. Everything really expensive because of the exchange rate. People smoking next to us in every cafe spoiling our dinner. For the money we spent we could have had 2 holidays in the UK. Won't be doing that again.

YABU

Mrsjay · 07/07/2012 10:16

tell you what is character building inabeautifulplace gales and rain in whitley bay in 1986 and the caravan blew over now THAT is character building Grin

difficultpickle · 07/07/2012 10:20

My idea of a holiday is not being at work and preferably not being at home doing housework. Other than that I'm easy. Foreign travel is nice but it is also a lot of phaffing around and quite tiring. We have one week in Paris this summer and a week's camping. I'm looking forward to the camping more as we can just pack up the car and go rather than having to get the train to London, a taxi to St Pancras, a train to Paris and then a taxi or Metro to our hotel.

inabeautifulplace · 07/07/2012 10:34

Aye, maybe that was a bit glib because the current weather has caused a lot of problems for people. I am quite near the New Forest though, and I can see blue sky so perhaps there's hope for the OP :)

AxlRosesLeatherTrousers · 07/07/2012 10:36

Well I see were you're coming from YABU. If I looked at it from your perspective I wouldn't have had a holiday in 20 years (last time I went abroad).

LibrariansMakeNovelLovers · 07/07/2012 10:37

YABU - of course you can 'holiday' in the UK. We're going camping for a week in the summer hols. Just because you don't like holidaying in the UK doesn't mean it isn't possible.

Mrsjay · 07/07/2012 10:38

Oh i love the New fForrest we were there last year and lots of people i spoke to were taking Littlies to peppa pig world

insancerre · 07/07/2012 10:38

I'm going to Scotland for my holiday. I live in England, is that abroad enough?
YABU
If you don't want to go then just stay at home.

ENormaSnob · 07/07/2012 10:45

I love camping and caravaning in the uk.

But, I wouldn't do it for our main holiday tbh.

Each to their own though.

BikeRunSki · 07/07/2012 10:48

I have a 3yo and an 8mo. "Holiday " is not having to cook or clean for a few days and someone else to look after the DCs a bit. Which means my mum's Somerset.
