to think that staying in the UK is NOT a holiday

I'm sick of people patronising me. Next week I'm going to Peppa Pig World (and a car museum and assorted rubbishy British crappy places) for my daughters 2nd birthday and my 30th. Friends who have returned from hot countries have said things like, "Oh you must be really looking forward to it" and "Your jollies are soon!" (jollies = holidays).

FFS! Peppa Pig World is NOT a holiday!! What's worse is that my husband really believes that this is a fucking holiday. My idea of a holiday is:

Different culture.
Different country.
Nice weather is a bonus.

Whereas we'll be pushing a pram around in the rain for a week. I see it more as a 'trip' and no it's not semantics. And yes I'm PMSing.

I have this argument with my DP. I like hot, foreign places, and he doesn't.

I know lots of the UK is beautiful: Scotland, Yorkshire, West Wales, Cumbria, Cornwall and so on and so forth. I look forward to spending time in all those places when I'm retired (if I live that long!) But the thing is when you have only one holiday a year, you really don't want to spend it in a place where it's going to fucking rain for two weeks.

Angelico · 07/07/2012 17:39

I still sympathise with you OP. It has fucking poured with rain here the last few days with no signs of it ever stopping, EVER!!! I am so depressed not to be going away this year :( One week of sun, that's all I need to survive for the other 51 weeks in the year...

TroublesomeEx · 07/07/2012 18:24

I don't travel well.

There is often quite a bit of sun in other countries and it's often a bit too warm.

I like nice cold blighty. A bit less rain would be nice though...

I agree with Zukie, beaches are soooo boring. Once you've made a boat and buried the children, paddled in the sea and dripped an ice cream over yourself. There's nothing left!

Smile at LaQueen.

I was desperate to go to Hebden Bridge for a week this summer.

Having seen the news yesterday I've never been so relieved in my life that DH talked me out of it.

Although I may not feel the same come August when we are off to the West coast of Scotland for a week, as per his bright idea!

AllieZ · 07/07/2012 18:45

YABU. Holiday=not working. I can have a holiday in my flat reading all day. Don't need to go anywhere.

Beaches can be boring - so read a book.

"I wouldn't go away with a 6 month old and 2 year old to be honest as it just seems like hassle to me "
It all depends where you go, Centreparcs with the best weather of last year, all you can do swimming and lovely walks and my 6m and 2 year old loved it, in fact we all loved it which made it the best holiday ever.
Peppa Pig world which 2 year olds love and you hate = bad holiday for you
Hot beach type holiday = bad holiday for kids = bad holiday for everyone

Yabvvvu. It is what you make it. If you can't enjoy time away with your family without it having to be out of the UK then quite frankly it speaks volumes about your lack of imagination

YABU!! In my book, a holiday is staying away from home and having a nice time whether that be 200 miles or 2000 miles away!!

We have holidayed many times in the UK and had a fabulous time. And fwiw, I'd love a day at Peppa Pig World Grin

miaowmix · 07/07/2012 20:20

yanbu
I don't consider a holiday to be a real holiday unless it's abroad either, but I am well aware I am a spoilt and selfish baby Wink.
I cannot deal with rain and cold and sulk if I don't get a tan. No need to tell me I'm pathetic.

whiteandyelloworchid · 07/07/2012 20:25

well it wont be much of a holiday with that attitude!!

chin up love

fuzzpig · 07/07/2012 21:36

YABU, of course it's a holiday even in the UK. Why did you book it if you knew you'd hate it? Especially for your birthday :(

I like the definition somebody posted above: To me a holiday is not having to set an alarm clock and having time away from the humdrum of everyday life - yep. I had a lie-in today... til 8.30!

However I'd be lying if I didn't crave a holiday abroad - more for culture than weather though as I really don't cope with heat that well. France is my favourite (Carcassone, anyone?) I am a bit gutted that I will probably never go abroad with my parents again especially as it's the only time I can handle being around them :(

We went to a haven park 1.5hrs away and loved it. This year is complicated as DH is waiting for an operation so we couldn't book anything. We are doing a Staycation instead which can be flexible although we aren't doing any very ambitious day trips due to DH's current condition. A day in London will be the biggest (including Sherlock Holmes museum :o) I am really excited though and so are all the DCs/DCs (ranging from 2-20!) I think it's all in the planning - even more so if like us you have no car.

FWIW I'd love to go to peppa pig world! My 2 are the perfect age for it and imagining their faces light up makes any adult boredom totally worthwhile. This thread has inspired me - I'm going to ask my parents if they would mind taking me and DCs there for DS' birthday, instead of presents :)

fuzzpig · 07/07/2012 21:37

Sigh, so many typos.

DartsAgain · 07/07/2012 21:38

We recently had a week SC in an apartment in Whitby, and it only rained on 2 days. We still enjoyed ourselves (me, DP and 2 DCs aged 8 and 12).

We will be having a 2nd SC week in Falmouth in August. But we've planned for eventualities and we always pack things like DS consoles, Kindles, playing cards, etc, so we've yet to have a UK holiday that was totally ruined.

2rebecca · 08/07/2012 09:05

We've avoided the worst of the rain in Scotland. The north of Scotland has had some very good weather recently.

Molehillmountain · 08/07/2012 09:45

Apparently my dc went on their first holiday this year. Two weeks in a cottage with beautiful beach nearby in Cornwall and center parcs every year with gp's leave my children deprived - parenting fail, clearly. Genuinely each to their own, but the journey itself was a reason for us to be hugely appreciative of our uk holidays.

imnotmymum · 08/07/2012 09:49

There is a Peppa pig world ?????? A Peppa pig world ??what the hell ??

imnotmymum · 08/07/2012 09:51

It does. Laughing at Windy castle Grin

HomeEcoGnomist · 08/07/2012 15:51

"Really curious how it rains in those forrin parts
upwards? Maltesers? Sangria?"

Well, I didn't say anything about it raining anything other than water, but FWIW, what I actually meant was:

in a one week holiday, one brief storm, which dries up pretty quickly and you are back to the pool/beach and clear blue skies within a couple of hours, as if it had never happened is very different to a week of horizontal rain and one brief interlude of sunshine that means you can wear one jumper instead of two!

or to put it more succintly:
when you have only one holiday a year, you really don't want to spend it in a place where it's going to fucking rain for two weeks.

Oh, and I don't think it's that odd to refer to different types of heat - humidity causing the difference. You experience the heat differently in a rain forest than you would in a desert.

Fluffy1234 · 08/07/2012 16:49

YANBU, the U.k is fine for a mini break but for me you can't beat the excitement of a new country, climate and experiences. I am a self confessed holidayholic.
