to think that staying in the UK is NOT a holiday

I'm sick of people patronising me. Next week I'm going to Peppa Pig World (and a car museum and assorted rubbishy British crappy places) for my daughters 2nd birthday and my 30th. Friends who have returned from hot countries have said things like, "Oh you must be really looking forward to it" and "Your jollies are soon!" (jollies = holidays).

FFS! Peppa Pig World is NOT a holiday!! What's worse is that my husband really believes that this is a fucking holiday. My idea of a holiday is:

Different culture.
Different country.
Nice weather is a bonus.

Whereas we'll be pushing a pram around in the rain for a week. I see it more as a 'trip' and no it's not semantics. And yes I'm PMSing.

My holiday has made me ill. A week camping in torrential rain in Scotland can do that to you. Plus eldest with chickenpox and other two with vomiting bug.

But I sympathise about Peppa Pig World. Which is your husband's favourite character?

vodkaandcaviar · 06/07/2012 20:52

I'd see it as a break moreso than a 'holiday' but each to their own!

gingertea · 06/07/2012 20:52

YABU. I cannot afford even a UK holiday this year and would love what you have planned.

whenyouseeitwaveorcheer · 06/07/2012 20:52

Haha, we did Peppa Pig world and Beaulie motor museum last year.

We stayed in a holiday let though, so it was a holiday. Are you doing daytrips or staying away?

BurntToastSmell · 06/07/2012 20:52

pointy thanks so much. just what i need right now.

YABU

There are beautiful places in the UK, I've had some lovely holidays in this country.

And if you mean Beaulieu, it is a great day out.

Vagaceratops · 06/07/2012 20:54

Having said that I always avoid toristy places like PP world. I hate them!!

landofsoapandglory · 06/07/2012 20:55

YABU

Taking time off work, going way from home, doing something different is a holiday wether it is in this country or not. Last time we went abroad, it pissed it down for 3 days out of 7. Our kids were old enough to still go to the beach and in the pool and not reall care, but families with little tiny ones were having a horrid time trying to entertain them.

We're going away on Thursday for a week and are avidly watching the forecasts. So far, so good. (sorry)

"You feel entitled to a holiday abroad but can't have one. Poor you."

Why spend money on pushing a pram around in the rain? It's a waste.

A holiday is some time off from the usual humdrum. I know some people who work having their holidays at home watching tv and doing diy as they can't afford to go on a 'proper' foreign holiday.

We are going on holiday to Hamphire this year for a wedding and making a week of it. I am looking forward to it and so are the kids, even if it means a 6 hour drive and staying in a static caravan for a week. With 6 of us I am saving about £300 on passports alone! You can have some very great holidays in the UK so YABU

My idea of hell would be a hot beach holiday where I don't know the language and would therefore struggle to explain why autistic ds is leaping up and down and shouting at the top of his voice every 5 mins.
Althoug Peppa Pig world is stretching it a bit as well

storminabuttercup · 06/07/2012 20:56

YABU, a holiday is a holiday.

Bunbaker · 06/07/2012 20:56

"It's your expectations that are the problem."

I agree. We live in Yorkshire. Some of our best holidays have been in the UK - Devon, Cornwall, Shropshire, Dorset, Wales, Scotland.

Exploring another county, its treasures, history and natural beauty is a wonderful way to spend a week. We don't have guaranteed weather so we take appropriate clothing and deliberately don't pick a destination that is dependent on good weather. There is so much to see and do in the UK.

Although the idea of going to see Peppa Pig doesn't constitute a holiday IMO.

ShowOfHands · 06/07/2012 20:56

I don't even own a passport. This year I had two nights in a tent 7 miles down the road with a 5yo and a 10mo (DH worked the nights as he couldn't get time off). So 3 days in a tent up the road was our holiday. And you know what? We bloody loved it. Grin YABtotallyU. But hormonal, so I forgive you.

Springforward · 06/07/2012 20:56

YABU. We're off to Pembroke soon and I'm really excited, I love it there!

BurntToastSmell · 06/07/2012 20:58

"You can't really blame other people for thinking you are doing the sort of sane, rational things that people do on their holidays "

Such as...?

I love a good ol Blighty break. I don't even mind day trips. But if I had unlimited funds I probably would choose to go abroad. I agree a break's a break tho so I'm afraid YABU. 'Tis best to try and enjoy it as best as you can, and be thankful for what you have IMO though I may not take my own advice, as I will get no hols this year, sob

youarekidding · 06/07/2012 20:58

Totally forgot what I was gonna sat when I read hecates post.

PMSL Grin

Imo a holiday, like life, is pretty much what you make it.
If it's not a 'holiday' for you, then okay it's not a holiday.

But you clearly need one WinkGrin

BurntToastSmell · 06/07/2012 21:00

"right now, the UK is exactly the sort of holiday I want"

With weather like this? This is what scares me the most

GetDownNesbitt · 06/07/2012 21:00

We have been abroad once, twelve years ago. That is it.

I still have two or three holidays a year. Mainly Cornwall, London, Edinburgh. They are still holidays.

DoMeDon · 06/07/2012 21:01

YANBU - this is something which really splits people. I totally get where you are coming from. I hadn't been on a 'proper' holiday for 3 years- been to places in the UK and had lovely times but recently went away and I feel like a new woman. For 'proper' holiday read - sun lounger in foreign country.

GnomeDePlume · 06/07/2012 21:02

YANBU

Though if you were going to Amsterdam you could be going to the spectacles museum. Every country has its dire tourist attractions. Sadly in the UK we have been over blessed with them.
