to think that staying in the UK is NOT a holiday

I'm sick of people patronising me. Next week I'm going to Peppa Pig World (and a car museum and assorted rubbishy British crappy places) for my daughters 2nd birthday and my 30th. Friends who have returned from hot countries have said things like, "Oh you must be really looking forward to it" and "Your jollies are soon!" (jollies = holidays).

FFS! Peppa Pig World is NOT a holiday!! What's worse is that my husband really believes that this is a fucking holiday. My idea of a holiday is:

Different culture.
Different country.
Nice weather is a bonus.

Whereas we'll be pushing a pram around in the rain for a week. I see it more as a 'trip' and no it's not semantics. And yes I'm PMSing.

Yabu. I have always holiday'd in the uk, honeymooned here in fact, glorious weather if you are bloody lucky (we were) and yet I think the thing that stops it being a holiday is having a toddler come along.

Scuttlebutter · 06/07/2012 22:21

YABVU.

We've just come back from a wonderful week's holiday in Pembrokeshire. Only just over a hundred miles from our home, but it was wonderful. We enjoyed miles of gorgeous beaches, amazingly beautiful coast and countryside, meeting up with a MN friend Grin which was lovely, a treat at a quilting shop, and a whole week with my DH and our wonderful dogs. It was bliss, even though it pissed down for five days out of seven.

I do short breaks abroad occasionally with a girlfriend and that's great, but I love our holidays in the UK, with DH, a gaggle of greyhounds and plenty of gin. What's not to like?

exoticfruits · 06/07/2012 22:29

YABU - especially when you have DCs who are much better not being dragged off on long journeys.

HeadfirstForRomance · 06/07/2012 22:33

The best holidays I've had have been in the UK. My favourite place in the whole world is Glencoe in the highlands, I'd love to move up that way. I feel so peaceful and tranquil while we are there and if that's not a holiday then what is?

Peppa pig world sounds heinous though :)

Nobhead · 06/07/2012 22:37

I do kind of agree with you OP. We go to Dorset for a week each year to PIL's caravan and whilst we do have a lovely time down there with them and it is a really nice part of the UK, I just don't feel like I have truly been on holiday until I have sat by a pool for a week in a hot country and drank some ice cold cocktails and eaten like a pig I am a lazy spoilt cow though

BurntToastSmell · 06/07/2012 22:43

Guys seriously I am FUCKING SCARED about the weather. WTF can you do when it's pissing down like this?

OP posts:
Whenthetoadcamehome · 06/07/2012 22:49

Put on some waterproofs and get on with it. That or stay in yr caravan with a cats arse mouth moaning. It really is that simple. You can choose how good or and it is, it's your attitude that will make or break your break! Spent last weekend in the pouring rain at a theme park, was great, hardly any queues as noone was there!

Whenthetoadcamehome · 06/07/2012 22:49

How good or bad it is, sorry.

BackforGood · 06/07/2012 22:54

YABVU. Holidays come in all shapes and sizes. What makes or breaks them is the attitude you go with, more than the weather or the accomodation or the location on their own.

I don't understand why you have booked to go on something you have decided you will hate Confused

BurntToastSmell · 06/07/2012 22:54

You know that serious weather we had last Thursday. Well I was caught out in it. Me and a double pram. And within seconds the water was up to my knees. I was scared for the babies (6mths & 2 years). I had to run like wildfire to find a pub to hide in, and tbh I'm still shuck up by it. I've never seen anything like it before in my life. You may laugh, but unless you were caught in it, you have no idea how scary it was trying to get those babies to safety.

So the thought of going through it all again for fun keeps me awake at night tbh.

YABU. We had a fantastic week long holiday in Newquay last year. It was absolutely gorgeous and I actually enjoyed it more in a way than our first holiday in Lanzarote the previous year as there was more stuff to actually do (as in a zoo, cinema etc rather than just the beach/pool). We are off to Benidorm this year (working class and proud lol) because I do like to give DS the experience of foreign holidays and I do long for the sun/beach (which we actually had a lot of in Newquay) but I plan to alternate foreign/UK this year as I think this country has a hell of a to offer. Only downside is the unpredictable weather.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 06/07/2012 22:57

Make plans. Google the local soft play centres/cinemas/child friendly pubs or whatever so you have something you can do, and think of a couple of crafty things you can take.

Get your dd one of those all in one rain things and embrace it!

I feel for you

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 06/07/2012 22:59

Oh, that sounds flippant after your last post, that sounds horrible!

toptramp · 06/07/2012 23:03

Why are you taking your dd to Peppa Pig world in the first place? She is 2. YOU decide where you go. Ok she might like it but it will be ruined by your attitude. Don't be a martyr; Get thee to a travel agents next year fgs and go somehwere hot.
I don't mean to sound harsh op but I wasn't going to go abroad this year until I realised that the weather was going to be shite then I booked a holiday for dd and I in Manorka just the two of us and it will be the same price as a week away in Cornwall. Sunmasters sorted us for us.

So YANBU in that a holiday in the UK are not ''proper'' sunny holidays but YABU to go to Peppa Pig world in teh first place!

toptramp · 06/07/2012 23:04

I do love a Cornish holiday btw but I cannot abide this rain!

nothingoldcanstay · 06/07/2012 23:05

Actually if you live in the south going up north especially Scotland is quite a holiday. Much quieter roads, free and easy parking, great scenery and I can't speak the language. That is definitely a holiday.

However it's not the same having stale cake and tea an overpriced cafe here compared to an overpriced bistro with outside seating, facing the Med with the sun burning your shoulders and fresh seafood being prepared in the nearby market.

Whenthetoadcamehome · 06/07/2012 23:07

well you could choose to stay at home if you'd feel happier? Wuld you get a refund on any of your costs if you did?

Whenthetoadcamehome · 06/07/2012 23:07

Gah! Would!

I like a UK holiday too. But not this summer. And actually, probably never at Peppa Pig World.

ExitPursuedByABear · 06/07/2012 23:11

Agree that the weather can be an issue. We went to Cornwall last year and the weather was mostly lovely and we had a fabulous time, far, far better than Cuba the year before.

Peppa Pig world sounds like my idea of hell but each to their own.

I bloody love caravans (with a decent shower and central heating).

fairyfriend · 06/07/2012 23:13

For fucks sake, don't fucking go if it's so far beneath you.

My DD would love Peppa Pig World, I wish I could afford to take her.

Simple solution- don't go. Other people's holidays will be all the better without seeing your miserable face.

And for what it's worth- I'm sick of the weather too, and will fully admit I'd rather go somewhere warm than camp in England this year- but your sneering attitude is horrible.

RubyFakeNails · 06/07/2012 23:13

OP personally I agree with you but the question I have is what's stopping you from having the holidays you want?

You haven't said if its the money or something else?

whenthetoadcamehome - apparently we can't get a refund.

Gah, it's getting me down. I'm dreading it.
