to think that staying in the UK is NOT a holiday

I'm sick of people patronising me. Next week I'm going to Peppa Pig World (and a car museum and assorted rubbishy British crappy places) for my daughters 2nd birthday and my 30th. Friends who have returned from hot countries have said things like, "Oh you must be really looking forward to it" and "Your jollies are soon!" (jollies = holidays).

FFS! Peppa Pig World is NOT a holiday!! What's worse is that my husband really believes that this is a fucking holiday. My idea of a holiday is:

Different culture.
Different country.
Nice weather is a bonus.

Whereas we'll be pushing a pram around in the rain for a week. I see it more as a 'trip' and no it's not semantics. And yes I'm PMSing.

"Beaulie motor museum"

that's where we're going because my daughter loves cars. Dare I ask how boring it actually is?

A holiday is what you make it. This year (with dc aged 13 and 9) we are staying in a hotel for two nights and doing a 3 day theme park break Chessington, Legoland then Thorpe Park. I'm not even allowed on any rides because of a back problem but it is family time and I'm aiming to get some lovely memories from it that I can look back on when the children are too old to want to do things with us.

TheSpokenNerd · 06/07/2012 21:02

You sound like a spoiled twat OP..I would fucking LOVE to go to Peppa Pig world for my DDs birthday. As it is, we can't afford that...so we'll have cake and some presents at home and be glad we've got that much!

joanofarchitrave · 06/07/2012 21:02

LOL honeydragon

YABU OP, sorry. What you are hating IMO is holidays with small children.

Greythorne · 06/07/2012 21:02

I could not agree with you more.

I love holidays abroad because as soon as you exit the airport and have to drive on the other side of the road, you know you are away from home.

It's fab! Even mundance activities like shopping in a supermarket are less boring, because there's strange food and wine to sample, different language everywhere, hopefully a bit of sun.

What happens when you go on "holiday" in the British isles, you go to Tesco or Asda for food, where you see exactly the same produce as you see at home, you pop into the local paper shop where they have Radio 2 playing and the Daily Mail and The Sun on display. It's so......mundane.

I love going abroad. YANOTBU.

BurntToastSmell · 06/07/2012 21:03

"Are you doing daytrips or staying away?"

We're staying in.... a fucking caravan.

Burnt - don't ask [hugs]

the- spolied twat is harsh - OP doesn't like holidays in UK. It is unfortunate you can't afford to go but no need to vent at OP.

trixymalixy · 06/07/2012 21:04

YABU, we just spent a week in a lovely little cottage, was very peaceful and we were very lucky with the weather.

DumSpiroSpero · 06/07/2012 21:05

Why spend money on pushing a pram around in the rain? It's a waste.

Don't do it then. We didn't go away for holidays until DD was 4.5 and then it was 5 days at our local Butlins which is half an hours drive away, which we've done for the last 4 years. At least you can go for half board so you don't have to cook, shop or wash up and all the entertainment is included. Otherwise tbh, I don't see much point in going away with very small children.

Would also add that for the first time every I arranged nothing for the recent half term (we're all term-time only in our house), and we had a fab time - read books, watched DVD's played board games, painted, cooked - it was brilliant.

If it would make you feel a bit better - do you have anyone who could have your DD overnight so you and your DH/P could have a bit of child free time - maybe go for a couples massage and a nice meal?

usualsuspect · 06/07/2012 21:05

I love caravans but I'm right common.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 06/07/2012 21:06

Weather's not a problem if you're dressed correctly. Wellies and the raincover on the pushchair. Job done! :)

PoppyWearer · 06/07/2012 21:06

We've somehow lucked out and managed not one but two hot/sunny holidays in the UK this year. Incredibly jammy of us, pure fluke.

We are the kind of people who used to globe-trot a lot for work and for the hell of it Pre-DCs. I can't think of anything worse than a long flight/car journey with the DCs, although we have done it and survived. A short-ish drive with all the baby clobber and being able to nip to Tesco for nappies etc when needed is far more relaxing at the moment.

Although I do admit that we are very jaded about travel given previous work history.

Peppa Pig World was at the end of a very lovely break to the New Forest for us! Which also included Beaulieu. So....YABaBitU, sorry!

yellowraincoat · 06/07/2012 21:07

Boo fucking hoo OP

Some of us have to make do with awful shitty caravan holidays in this shithole we call home every single year.

Oh, it is just so awful and terrible. Poor us.

TheLightPassenger · 06/07/2012 21:07

YABU. But agree that PeppaPig is NOT my idea of a holiday.

jandymaccomesback · 06/07/2012 21:07

I didn't even go abroad until I was 44 (have made up for it since!). Does that mean for all those years I'd never had a holiday?

PavlovtheCat · 06/07/2012 21:07

well, imho you are bu. I love UK holidays. more than that, i love holidays that involve less than 2 hours travel. A holiday to me is time away from washing/cooking/cleaning/school/work/normal routine/bills coming through the door/the cats/friends (not always friends, sometimes they visit us!). It is visiting new places, lazing in a different environment (mostly yurts as I love them) eating good food cooked on an open fire, eating out whenever we please, going to beaches, kids staying up, drinking wine without work/school run/sunday hecticness.

It is spending a good few solid days with my family with little care in the world. Right now with a 2yo that is preferable somewhere close enough that DH and I have not killed each before passport control.

MistyRocks · 06/07/2012 21:07

op YANBU

but you know LOADS of people will say you're ungrateful, blah blah blah

i DESPERATELY wanted to get away abroad this year, had my sights set on new york with just DH and none of the dc

but am having to make do with rainy wales, with DC. Joy. Hmm

if that makes me ungrateful then so be it!

TheSpokenNerd · 06/07/2012 21:08

I don't think it's harsh Don I think the OP is harsh moaning about this nice day out or whatever it is...when LOADS of people can't afford a trip to the swimmig baths.

I'm not saying she has to LOVE it but it's selfish to moan when she has more than plenty of others.

usualsuspect · 06/07/2012 21:08

Poor deprived OP Sad

PoppyWearer · 06/07/2012 21:09

OddBoots your theme park break sounds fab!

Ample · 06/07/2012 21:09

My sympathies to you if you are staying in a caravan. That would be a deal breaker for me.
And yes I have camped. I have the experience. I also still have the nightmares.

Here op, Wine & more Wine

PavlovtheCat · 06/07/2012 21:09

and I have pale skin which burns at the mention of sun, and I get hot and very bothered in heat, so actually, hot places would not be that enjoyable. gives me a headache.

usualsuspect · 06/07/2012 21:09

We wanted to do the Caribbean this year , doesn't everyone?

PavlovtheCat · 06/07/2012 21:10

misty so why don't you just stay home and save that money for a time when you can get to NY? have that time in rainy hometown?
