to think that staying in the UK is NOT a holiday

I'm sick of people patronising me. Next week I'm going to Peppa Pig World (and a car museum and assorted rubbishy British crappy places) for my daughters 2nd birthday and my 30th. Friends who have returned from hot countries have said things like, "Oh you must be really looking forward to it" and "Your jollies are soon!" (jollies = holidays).

FFS! Peppa Pig World is NOT a holiday!! What's worse is that my husband really believes that this is a fucking holiday. My idea of a holiday is:

Different culture.
Different country.
Nice weather is a bonus.

Whereas we'll be pushing a pram around in the rain for a week. I see it more as a 'trip' and no it's not semantics. And yes I'm PMSing.

Yanbu. We are camping next week and tho the dc will absolutely love it it isn't a holiday for me. I won't get any sleep due to being uncomfy and cold and we will tramp about and watch the dc climb trees and make dens.

I was tickled by the person asking for Imodium in foreign using sign language. I had to do that with pile cream in Portuguese (don't ask). It went on a while until eventually she said 'ahhh Preparation H' abject humiliation.

mummytime · 06/07/2012 23:17

I've had lots of lovely holidays in the UK.
Don't really see your problem.

fairyfriend · 06/07/2012 23:18

HOW is it inverted snobbery?!!!!

fairyfriend · 06/07/2012 23:19

Rude, I'll give you. It was meant to be. But it is most certainly called for.

hoops997 · 06/07/2012 23:19

YANBU, a holiday IMO is about going somewhere different, and coming back after relaxing in the sun.

Not shitty uk where I live and can go sloshing about in the bloody rain, I can do that the whole year round!

Never understood people who holiday in the uk!

Angelico · 06/07/2012 23:20

fairyfriend it's not the OP's fault you can't afford to go away - and you admit yourself you would rather go abroad. You sound much more sneering than the OP.

Angelico · 06/07/2012 23:21

And no it wasn't called for.

YouBrokeMySmoulder · 06/07/2012 23:23

I don't think it is sneering fairy to say that objectively it would be better to be sitting on a beach in the caribbean with a drink in hand than dragging yourself round a wet PP world. It is just factual.

This country can be fucking miserable in the wet and cold.

RubyFakeNails · 06/07/2012 23:30

I'm still interested as to why you aren't getting the holidays you want?

I have no idea thank fuck where peppa pig world is or how much it would cost but I can't believe the cost of all these trips couldnt be swapped for a holiday in France. I think people go camping in France which would at least fulfil 2 of your requirements.

Yes there are lots of nice places in England but I wouldnt swap them for 2 weeks in Jamaica!

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 06/07/2012 23:46

Much as I don't feel UK holidays are holidays, I always get a tad jealous when I hear of people going to Peppa Pig World. Crazy, I know. But my two loved Peppa Pig when they were little and Peppa Pig World didn't open until they were too old to be interested. We missed out.

FreelanceMama · 06/07/2012 23:52

Depends on your definition. By your one, our holidays in Wales are holidays. Different language, culture, etc. I think it's partly about what you do while away that makes it a holiday. Doing whatever you want and not having to do anything you don't enjoy is my idea of holiday. Which is why we will never be going to Peppa Pig World!!

YvonneMcGruder · 06/07/2012 23:59

A holiday is time off from your usual routine. Somewhere different, and getting away. So what if it's the UK instead of the Bahamas?! It's still a holiday.
You'd enjoy it a whole lot more if you lowered your expectations and unclenched a little bit. Smile

VolAuVent · 07/07/2012 00:07

If you're staying away from home for a week for a change of scene and to see the local attractions, (i.e. it's not for work or visiting family) then you're going on holiday.

It might not be your preferred type of holiday, but whether you enjoy it or not, it's a holiday.

cerealqueen · 07/07/2012 00:07

YABU. Just booked a holiday on the North Norfolk Coast, and can't bloody wait as its lovely up there, unspoilt, beautiful. We too will spend much of it doing stuff for Dd1 but we love that too, as we get to see things through a 3 yr olds eyes.

Trioofprinces · 07/07/2012 00:44

I'll go against the tide and say YANBU! I too consider a trip in the UK to be a break and a trip abroad to be a 'proper' holiday. Apart from 8 years ago when we went to the Isle of Wight we have been lucky enough to always holiday abroad and our kids have seen quite a few countries.

That said, I do realise we're in a fortunate position and we also prioritise holidays in our spending/saving. I think as someone earlier said, it's about expectations.

I find it interesting and a bit sad the strength of feeling that YABU, and I think some cases of inverted snobbery are definitely in evidence (plus also many cases of actually loving holidays in the UK).

Trioofprinces · 07/07/2012 00:46

I feel i should add that I am not against breaks in the UK, we also camp in the uk as a family or with friends every year and love that too, it's just that I don't consider it a 'proper' holiday.

GnomeDePlume · 07/07/2012 00:58

YANBU

I can remember 4 holidays from my childhood, 3 were canal boat holidays. Canal boat holidays are awful. We would spend a week chugging round staring up the noses of people who were allowed to get off their holiday accomodation.

NarkedRaspberry · 07/07/2012 01:04

*'There are some beautiful places to holiday in the UK

However, Peppa Pig World is not one of them'*

Grin Worra

BigBoobiedBertha · 07/07/2012 01:09

YABU.

A 'holiday' abroad is a trip because there is more travelling involved and staying in the UK is a holiday unless of course you are staying at home and then your days out are trips. Staying in the UK is much less hassle so more of a break plus it does rain abroad you know.

The UK is pretty diverse in terms of landscape and attractions and even culture. Go to a different part of the country if you want a change of scene.

I don't envy you Peppa Pig World but surely you would do something for your children no matter where you went in the world? As a parent you just have to suck it up when it comes to tedious child friendly trips. I don't see it makes that much difference what country you are in.

MsAverage · 07/07/2012 01:26

^Different culture.
Different country.^

I go for breakfast from Islington to Brixton and can call that holiday. They have their own currency there!

BleepingSooty · 07/07/2012 01:55

I knew a guy who every summer used to book his family into a big hotel in the city they actually lived in. They loved it as it had an all you can eat buffet and the kids played in the hotel pool. All the joys of a holiday without the stress of traveling.

Not my idea of fun though! I have fond memories of our annual camping trip in Devon as a child. We loved it!
