to find spitting in the street unacceptable?

I've noticed a few (mainly teenage boys) people spitting in the street/park recently. I've always thought it is not acceptable, perhaps this is why they do it?!

I glare at the spitter if I dare, but if they look intimidating then I ignore it and keep pushing the buggy. Am I BU to find spitting disgusting and has anyone else noticed this problem?

We have a bog indoor shopping centre here, and people will spit on the ground when they are inside. I. Just. Don't. Understand.

I also dislike people eating in the street. Not like spitting at all, but can't they just sit down while they wolf their Greggs sausage roll?

Pet hate of mine along with holding one nostril and blowing snot out of the other on the pavement. Bloody grose!

They do say however that teenage boys make more saliva, still doesn't excuse it though use a frigging tissue

It's disgusting and really turns my stomach.

The biggest offenders here seem to be teenage boys and African men and women.

My DS's old Head teacher had to send a letter out to parents a couple of years ago asking them not to spit in the playground ffs

When she saw a Dad hoiking up a greeny and spitting it on the playground, she marched right up to him with a paper towel and made him clean it up!

I was talking to a taxi driver about this the other day, he suggested they do it because they see football players doing it.

Nothing gets me retching faster than snot/greenies/flobbers being hurled from the body onto the pavement! And yes worra - it is a bit of a thing with men of African heritage but not exclusively. No idea why anyone does it unless it's just for the sheer hell of being utterly disgusting?

Worra, that's grim. I was going to ask if the parents knew their darlings were spitting in public but it sounds like sometimes the children are following their parents spitting behaviour..

Lentilly it seems to be a thing for some men and women of African heritage...to be fair though I probably see more women than men on the school run.

However, I think once a person's been in a country for a while, they do get to know what's socially acceptable and what isn't.

When I was growing up in the 70's, it was definitely more white teenagers and Asian men and women who would just blatantly hoik up and spit out.

I don't see the Asian men and women doing it anymore....shame the teenagers didn't learn as quickly

DS would get a clip round the ear if I caught him doing it.
As for the snot rocket thing, that's worse. I saw several men do it in the area of London that I stayed in recently. I've never seen anyone else do it ever. I damn near vomited on the pavement. There is ABSOLUTELY no need to eject any bodily fluids onto the pavement EVER. Get a tissue, spit or swallow! FGS!

Agree for people who are persistent offenders, but sometimes you are sick and caught short, I've had to semi-vomit a mix of phlegm and excess spittle outside due to nasty throat infection and used up tissues. But I try to be discreet and keep it out the way, and look up apologetically afterwards.

Therefore I cannot be universally outraged by it. :o

When I was at school the Muslim boys would spit on the playground (I never noticed it in class nor from the girls) during Ramadan claiming it would break their fast to swallow their own saliva. I never found out if they were telling the truth or if they were pulling a fast one with the staff but I do know that my little brother got in a lot of trouble for copying them.

No it doesn't break your fast OddBoots, though there are some usually uneducated people who think it does. Nothing that is naturally in your body breaks the fast of course!

Vile vile vile. People who spit in the street should be frog-marched to the nearest police station to have their nasal passages filled with quick drying cement.

But seriously, if we all say "eeuuuuulgh!" loudly and glare at the offenders when we see them do it, perhaps the message will start to get through. Don't give a stuff about it being cultural or whatever. It's simply foul.
