to find spitting in the street unacceptable?

I've noticed a few (mainly teenage boys) people spitting in the street/park recently. I've always thought it is not acceptable, perhaps this is why they do it?!

I glare at the spitter if I dare, but if they look intimidating then I ignore it and keep pushing the buggy. Am I BU to find spitting disgusting and has anyone else noticed this problem?

This is a recently new thing, I think. When I was young (and I am in my 60s now), it was completely unacceptable to do this. There used to be signs on the buses forbidding it, I remember, so obviously some men did do it.

There is, of course, a health issue, too. At one time TB was spread in this way, I think.

To be honest I don't think I have every seen a woman spitting.

Pastabee · 05/07/2012 13:19

Yuk yuk. YANBU.

grimbletart · 05/07/2012 14:34

Never go to China anyone who dislikes spitting. It is the one thing I really found hard to handle when I was working there. It is so bad there they had to run a campaign prior to the Beijing Olympics to try and persuade people not to do it.

When I was a little girl (in the 50s) my walk to school used to be like playing hopscotch avoiding the snot and spit on the pavements left by men on their way to work. After the Clean Air Act there it almost stopped so I also remember the 60s as being relatively devoid of it.

But now, football and cricket set a lousy example. Hardly ever see a female sportsperson spit though. Probably means blokes have less ability to hold their spit just like they seem to have less ability to manage their bladders judging by what you see in the street sometimes Grin

somebloke123 · 05/07/2012 14:46

Yes disgusting. And a health hazard too. If it's not already illegal it ought to be, as it is in Singapore:

BupcakesandCunting · 05/07/2012 14:49

YANBU

If I see someone do it, I look them up and down like a piece of shit and do a long, drawn-out "Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww"

iloveeverton · 05/07/2012 14:49

YANBU

A teen gobbed on the treadmill next to me at the gym! i told him he was disgusting.

crypes · 05/07/2012 14:53

That tennis player that beat Nadal last week, he was spitting and flobbing like a good 'un , i was shocked that he wasnt told off and everyone was clapping and cheering him! Disgusting i had to turn the tennis off he turned my stomach.

YAB slightly U....if I'm going for a run, I to end up with a build up of saliva in my mouth. Swallowing it causes me to choke, so I eject it. Under those circumstances, I think it's acceptable to spit in the street so I do it.

I wouldn't just randomly spit in the street for fun though.

EasilyBored · 05/07/2012 15:30

^Take a tissue. I don't care if you've just run a marathon, or you're running away from an angry bear. There is no need to gob your body fluids into the street.

Slobby · 05/07/2012 15:33

I should clarify - i'd look for the nearest bit of grass before spitting - but, why on earth would I want to carry around a soggy tissue when i can spit onto a grass verge?

EasilyBored · 05/07/2012 15:35

Grass verge I will let you off, as long as I don't have to see it. It's the pavement (or indoors) spitters that need to be burned at the stake.

TheSmallClanger · 05/07/2012 15:35

Running is not an excuse for spitting in the street, or in the park, or anywhere.

Slobby · 05/07/2012 15:38

Thanks easilybored. SmallClanger, spitting onto grass in the park is not a problem in my book - we'll agree to disagree.

MrsApplepants · 05/07/2012 15:43

Once, when i was a teenager, someone walking in front of me spat, the wind blew and it went all over my new trousers. Was nearly in tears

Mindyourownbusiness · 05/07/2012 15:45

I dont think even sportsmen have any excuse. My DS was a cross country county champion and track runner in his teens and he never did this and l know - l was that pushy mum who watched him every race and ran round lthe course like a lune shouting at him.

I know everyone's different but he is asthmatic too so you think would have more need than most. It seemed to be only the odd one or two -always the cocky rebellious types shall we say.

Agree it's disgusting.

TheSmallClanger · 05/07/2012 15:47

Spitting onto the grass at the park is unhygienic and antisocial. I don't care if you were running. People go there to relax and exercise their children and dogs, not watch people gobbing and dodge the detritus.

And yes, I do use the dog shit bins, before you try that angle.

Frontpaw · 05/07/2012 15:48

I see grown people do it. Disgusting! Absolutely manky and should be an offence, rather than just offensive. Especially when accompanied with a gurgley snort into nose from the back of the throat.

MOSagain · 05/07/2012 15:50

Disgusting habit. I spent over 5 years living in the Middle East where it appeared to be the national pastime. Absolutely vile and they'd even do it indoors in shopping malls. Animals Angry

Frontpaw · 05/07/2012 16:00

Really? DHs family is from the abouts and people spitting or even blowing their nose would cause an outbreak of swooning.

TheCrackFox · 05/07/2012 16:05

YANBU

It is utterly disgusting.

If you are going for a run take a tissue to spit in. There really is no excuse.

LulaPalooza · 05/07/2012 16:10

YANBU in the slightest. It is absolutely gopping.

I am ashamed to say that Mr Palooza does it. He apologises afterwards, but it makes me really, really cross and vommy. In fact, next time he does it in my presence I am going to vom on him, the dirty bastard.

MNers, if you see a very handsome, mixed race South African man spitting in the street you have my permission to slap him. Hard.

WorraLiberty · 05/07/2012 17:25

YAB slightly U....if I'm going for a run, I to end up with a build up of saliva in my mouth. Swallowing it causes me to choke, so I eject it. Under those circumstances, I think it's acceptable to spit in the street so I do it.

No it isn't acceptable at all Angry

Spit into a tissue. Why should other people have to put up with your gob on the pavement or grass verges?

Frontpaw · 05/07/2012 17:55

When I run I get a big bogey nose. So I blow my nose on my t-shirt. I am a class act all the way!

TouTou · 05/07/2012 18:00

I don't care if you are running, have a cold, are playing tennis on centre court, are in the cup final, are African, are white, are a child, are an adult - its JUST FUCKING GROSS and there is NO NEED!!!

Angry

I will vote for the next party who strings people up by their thumbs for spitting.

Frontpaw · 05/07/2012 18:03

You are not trying to incite vigilantiism, are you?

Cos if you are, I'm in! (Unlkess they are big and scary or mad looking)
