Catching up on Gordon Ramsey's Behind Bars and apparently the prisoners get 5 choices for the evening meal!!! No fucking way! This is taking the mickey! No wonder this country is fucked up.....

MissTerry, thieving cars is hardly the same as murder though, i do think people that have done those things can change

squeakytoy · 02/07/2012 23:26

"The 5 'choices' offered to the inmates at Brixton were: option 1, option 2, vegetarian, vegan and halal. 5 options altogether but you can't get around that if you need to cater for the different needs of the prisoners."

Simple solution, give them all vegetarian. No need for any options then.

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/07/2012 23:28

Actually murder has one of the lowest recidivism rates of all crimes. You could therefore argue that murderers are the most likely to change.

squeaky I'll acknowledge that re-offending is ridiculously high if you admit that holding pumpkin's coat while she forcibly removes parts of people's bodies wouldn't sit well with you.

sensuallettuce · 02/07/2012 23:28

Nothing in life is one size fits all. That goes for the damage caused by a terrible childhood and for a dietary need - some people need to have meat in their diet.

pumpkinsweetie · 02/07/2012 23:29

Yes, why should hospital patients get less choices than a hardend criminal?
The meals in the hospital near where i live are of such poor quality that people get relatives to bring them food in as they are so gross, believe me i have tried them and when i had my last dc they didn't have any breakfast choices other than buttered breadAngry, why should someone in hospital get worse treatment than a prisoner??

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/07/2012 23:30

I don't know about you but DH brought me food in, and I could get some from friends and relatives, or order in or buy food from the shop. All things a prisoner can't do.

sensuallettuce · 02/07/2012 23:32

I refer to by previous points about armed forces -

pumpkinsweetie · 02/07/2012 23:33

I dunno, with some of these namby pamby human rights for prisoners laws, you never know what is next-probably be reading in paper tomorrow about how they are allowed to have takeaways otherwise it will breach their human rights-im sure a prisoner will think it up at some point Grin

sensuallettuce · 02/07/2012 23:35

Erm a lonely person with no friends or family can't get someone to bring them in food - and why they hell should they have to?! We do pay or the NHS you know and the S stands for SERVICE?!

squeakytoy · 02/07/2012 23:36

No, I couldnt hold Pumpkins coat, I am a bit too squeamish! Grin

"some people need to have meat in their diet." no they dont!

"Actually murder has one of the lowest recidivism rates of all crimes.", could that be because murder is most usually not random perhaps. A mass murderer is unlikely to ever be released to reoffend, and most other murders are spousal/familial rather than random.

I have also been googling for various facts, and various statistical reports say that the longer the sentence, the less likely the prisoner will reoffend, which does prove what I have been saying all along tonight.

sensuallettuce · 02/07/2012 23:36

FOR!! Doh!

sensuallettuce · 02/07/2012 23:37

Anaemic people do Hmm.

squeakytoy · 02/07/2012 23:37

Why do anaemic people need to eat meat?

Confused
pumpkinsweetie · 02/07/2012 23:39

Exactly sensual, some hospital patients don't have that luxury and the NHS is supposed to be there to provide people with a nutricious meal.
Some of these people are very ill & frail and many don't have family and friends yet they don't get the options prisoners get

wendythetrampwhowasborntorun · 02/07/2012 23:40

Freedom vs choice of 5 meals?

"Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose": trouble is, Janis The Goddess had nothing quite so snappy to say about "the choice of 5..."

Wendy is officially confused... Confused

Xmasbaby11 · 02/07/2012 23:42

in my hospital we had several choices for each course, actually.

Anyway, I'm sure the options were really not that tempting.

TheEnthusiasticTroll · 02/07/2012 23:48

"Its not nouvelle cuisine you know! Or bussed in every evening from the Fat Duck, its still basic food that you or I wouldnt want for our evening meal"

I bet it is still better than the average primary school, care home, homeless shelter, womans refuge, hospital or the average struggling mother or father can provide for thier own family.

TheEnthusiasticTroll · 02/07/2012 23:50

oh sorry forgot the forces too

sensuallettuce · 02/07/2012 23:51

They can leave apparently - unlike prisoners and are likely to end up in jail when they leave anyway Hmm

pumpkinsweetie · 02/07/2012 23:54

Tbh i don't see why murderers need the option of vegetarian or vegan because if they have killed a human they surely don't care about animals being killed eitherHmm
A vegetarian doesn't like the killing of animals which is in deed what the prisoner has done isn't as a human is an animal after all

squeakytoy · 03/07/2012 00:00

Sensual, I would still love to know why anaemic people need meat? :)

wannabedomesticgoddess · 03/07/2012 00:06

Perhaps instead of getting xboxes for good behaviour they get a wider choice for dinner. And if you're in prison and still being a right knob you get what you're given.

Victims of crime have their lifes turned upside down, but they still have to work, still have to pay for their own food etc. So why is it that its the perpetrator who gets the choices?

Prisoners do the sentence and then get out. Some victims may have to live with the consequences until their dying day.

And yes, a lot of prisoners do have issues which need addressed. But addressing these issues shouldnt take away from the punishment. Otherwise we are rewarding criminals.

bogeyface · 03/07/2012 00:08

When did MN become "MN - sponsored by the Daily Mail"?

bogeyface · 03/07/2012 00:10

Enthusiastic it isnt, it really isnt better than the average struggling family eats. As i said, my ex FIL worked in the prison service and he said it was vile, you wouldnt feed it to a pet in your home never mind a human being.

bogeyface · 03/07/2012 00:11

Just remembered something he said "It is food, but only legally"
