AIBU to want /buy a new TV?

Basically I'm sitting here watching a Harry Potter movie with my favourite Wine but feeling a bit Sad that I don't have a nice 42 or 48 inch slim line TV....maybe even one with 3D.

However, my sensible head Confused tells me to stop being ridiculous, my current monstrosity of a TV is in perfect working order and is only 8 years old so why on earth should I even be thinking of upgrading?

So, should I wait another 2 years when current TV will be 10 years old and it sits easier for me to renew it then.......plus I'll probably get a better model for less money in 2 years or should I throw caution to the wind and order one on line before I finish my 2nd bottle of wine? Grin
What would you do?

i would keep it! then spend the money a tv would have cost on cake

fuckityfuckfuckfuck · 30/06/2012 21:03

Nah, your old TV is perfectly fine. Mine is so damn heavy it's cracked the ancient cheat it's sat on. But it works and I'd feel a bit of a knob with a telly that hangs on a wall tbh. But I am an old before my time fuddy duddy who still refers to buying 'videos' when in HMV, much to the shame of my 8 yo daughter, so what do I know.

DefiniteMaybe · 30/06/2012 21:04

I'd leave it. I've got two old massive tvs no nice slim ones. The 'shelf' on the back is brilliant for hiding things away from the kids. Don't know how I'd manage without it.

PersonalClown · 30/06/2012 21:05

You could wait till one of the big brands does one of their offers of trading in an old Tv to get money off a brand new one.

I still have big old box Tvs upstairs and a 50 inch plasma in the living room!

Bestb411pm · 30/06/2012 21:05

I'm tight, so we've got two perfectly good crt's and that's the way it's staying till they die of natural causes!Grin

DP almost cried when I casually mentioned how many perfectly good crt's I'd seen on free cycle.

fossil97 · 30/06/2012 21:06

YABU

But you are not the only person left - we are as well. And the PIL's (theirs being wood-grain effect and having buttons instead of a remote Grin)

DH installs plasma screens for a living... cobbler's children...

You could probably get a decent one secondhand

ByTheSea · 30/06/2012 21:07

We've got one too. We're trying to sell our house (for the last 1 1/2 years) and keep thinking we'll get a new one when we have a new room to put it in.

fossil97 · 30/06/2012 21:07

Sorry!! Got mixed up YADNBU to want one. Whether it is affordable or even eco friendly , hard to say.

UnChartered · 30/06/2012 21:07

we've got a huge great lumbering thing that DH bought from the BHF shop about a year ago - a stop gap until he fixed the spanky HD thingy that is now languishing in the loft

it's hardly ever used by the adults in our house, more as a digital radio really, and DD loves it as she can see better patterns in the screen when she goes up really close Grin and loves playing with the static on her hair

PrincessScrumpy · 30/06/2012 21:08

We only got a flat screen as my lovely dad felt sorry for dh as I had said we couldn't upgrade from our lovely large Sony until it broke. My parents gave us a 42" 3d HD telly for Christmas. It's fab and dh's happiness is lovely but I did like the old one (never mention it to dad though Grin

bruffin · 30/06/2012 21:10

We don't have a flat screen either. Bought an expensive Loewe at least 10 years ago. Still had a brilliant picture so see no need to replace it until it breaks down.

yomellamoHelly · 30/06/2012 21:11

Ours is older than yours. Have moments where I think how nice it would to have a fancy schmancy one (TV section of JL particularly), but it's fine. We got ours second hand and can still remember how much better it is than the one we had before it.

RedBlanket · 30/06/2012 21:11

YABU, Order of the Phoenix is the worst film, youre not missing much If it was deathly hallows then YANBU.

We got rid of the old style Tv from our bedroom last year. It took 3 of us to get it down the stairs ( we seriously considered chucking it out of the window at one point). We've got a lovely slim one (not monster size or hung on the wall) that I carried up by myself. Wft did they use to make the old ones out of?

LostInWales · 30/06/2012 21:12

Watching Iron Man atm on a TV about 2 foot deep. BWe bought it in an offer with a DVD/Video combo when Princess Diana died as there was nothing in TV and we wanted to watch some films (so pre Sky/Freeview it's not even funny). It all works perfectly (even the Video player!)

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 30/06/2012 21:12

I'd like a proper tv with a proper back on it. But dh would divorce me if I offered a swop. I have never bonded with DHs slimline TV, since I was forced to out my proper big TV when he came along.

fossil97 · 30/06/2012 21:12

What will kill ours off is connectivity

In the ye olde days you turned on the TV and switched it to the right channel. If you wanted to record a programme you set your VHS recorder. Job done.

Now there are so many things plugged in, it's no longer possible to record a programme, everything is the wrong shape, the Freeview doesn't receive properly, we can't have the sound through the hifi any more, until we get some all singing integrated system I fear.

MonaLotte · 30/06/2012 21:12

We have one in our bedroom would like a flat one though as it would save space.

LostInWales · 30/06/2012 21:13

Scuse typo's, on iPhone.

ChaoticismyLife · 30/06/2012 21:13

I'm currently watching Criminal Minds on a CRT tv. I have another one in my bedroom although I only have it connected to a dvd player and rarely watch it.

NowThenWreck · 30/06/2012 21:14

YABU- my TV is ancient, massive, and brilliant. the picture and sound quality is so much better than a flat screen. Will be very sad when it dies (although it is 10 + years and still going strong!)

Mine is a really old second hand one that is the size of a tank.

However, I have been saving for a new black slimline lovely thing...and will have enough to buy it by September's wage

Meglet · 30/06/2012 21:25

I have an old telly. DS broke the previous (second hand) one so this one was kindly donated by my friend who had it taking up space in her spare room.

I never replace things until they are broken except clothes.

boredandrestless · 30/06/2012 21:27

We have a BIG bulky CRT TV, it's the third hand me down TV we have had! Their owners go for a slimline one for a few hundred quid and I take the old ones on their retirement years. Grin

My current one is a nice silver sony one with matching separate vcr and DVD player courtesy of my uncle. If this one dies I'll be looking on free cycle or in the BHF shop for a replacement. Even if I had hundreds of pounds to spend I wouldn't be spending them on a TV!

griphook · 30/06/2012 21:28

We had a big old massive tv until recently, I loved it. It broke. But then I brought a slim line one. Wow the extra space is amazing. I have speakers a wii a phone and a steroe where the big back used to be. Go on Treat yourself.
