AIBU to want /buy a new TV?

Basically I'm sitting here watching a Harry Potter movie with my favourite Wine but feeling a bit Sad that I don't have a nice 42 or 48 inch slim line TV....maybe even one with 3D.

However, my sensible head Confused tells me to stop being ridiculous, my current monstrosity of a TV is in perfect working order and is only 8 years old so why on earth should I even be thinking of upgrading?

So, should I wait another 2 years when current TV will be 10 years old and it sits easier for me to renew it then.......plus I'll probably get a better model for less money in 2 years or should I throw caution to the wind and order one on line before I finish my 2nd bottle of wine? Grin
What would you do?

Our Panasonic CRT cost over £1k 10 years ago, then another £300 to fix 3 years later and so I am refusing to part with it until it dies for a second time. The picture is fantastic and we now watch through the Sky Box. It sits in the alcove to the side of the chimney breast so doesn't take up too much room. We have flat screens in the kitchen and our bedroom but I don't like them due to the viewing angle issue.

Nothing wrong with crt. Some electronics buffs will tell you the colours are better. LCD screens are coming down in price all the time and places like Richer Sounds do some good deals. Don't be fooled by brand names like Sony. A lot of the tech. inside is the same. TVs are one of those 'man-things' where they convince themselves everything will look better and their mates are getting them

Our Sony CRT telly is 14 years old now, and it won't bloody die so I can replace it. It was handed down to us 6 years ago by my parents who got a flash flat screen which they've replaced 4 times since because they keep going funny (and they've got money to burn).

I'd love a shiny new telly, but just can't justify replacing it until it dies, even though I could make us afford it now if I wanted. I do like gadgets, but up until now there's no way I could afford to buy all the ones I want.

I had a manky old CRT TV. I don't like Television, so when Digital came in last year, I didn't do anything about converting it, saying I wanted to save up for a Slimline Flat screen Digital TV that would sit quietly and discreetly in the corner.
MONTHS passed, and to be fair, the DC's were great about not having TV, and I was as happy as the proverbial pig.

Until DS, on perusing the local Advertiser shouts 'Hey, there's a FREE Digital TV here, can I ring Mum?'

Of course I said Yes, figuring it would be half way across the county and not having a car I was still safe and TV less.

Oh No. Not only was it about 20 doors up the hill from us it is fecking MASSIVE. It is the size of a baby Rhinocerous.

Great pic, probably very expensive TV in it's day. Now it's in my bloody house! Hmm

We put our old CRT TV in the conservatory when we got our shiny new slimline one a couple of years ago. DH and I nearly did ourself a bloody injury moving it from the living room.

He has just put it on free cycle today Grin. He has stressed it is a two man job to move it.

I have a CRT TV which I bought in 2004 when my ex moved out and took the TV. It works perfectly with my Sky+ box, although the bloke from Sky sounded very surprised when he rang up to try and sell me Sky HD and I told him there was no point as I don't have a HD TV Grin.

I also have a CRT portable in my bedroom that I got off Freecycle a couple of years ago. It's fixed up to a freeview box but the box has just stopped working, so think I'll have to fork out for a new one. I suppose I could get a new flat screen portable rather than a new freeview box but I have concerns about viewing angle issue. You don't get those problems with a CRT you know!

Then the recycling of them... I visit many sites and watch electricals being dismantled and I see so many flatscreens in already - often the same latest models in shops. That tells me what I need to know about the quality.

Hmm. I see what you mean, Witch!

We have old tv - well for one no one is every going to nick it!

The engineer who came to reconnect us to sky etc after going digital (in the sticks so digital choice of channels is crap) raved about the quality of teh picture, apparently much better than flat screens.

People often have huge flat screens so the picture appears better but isn't.

HauntedLittleLunatic · 03/07/2012 14:13

Well I shall add that to my list of advantages -wont be stolen!

CogitoErgoSometimes · 03/07/2012 16:27

YABU... you are not the only one left with a fat telly! Our main one is about 10 years old, in great nick, and fits neatly into the shelf unit that was purpose built around it. Because the flat-screen ones are a totally different shape, when it finally dies I'm worried I'll need a whole new living room...
