AIBU to want /buy a new TV?

Basically I'm sitting here watching a Harry Potter movie with my favourite Wine but feeling a bit Sad that I don't have a nice 42 or 48 inch slim line TV....maybe even one with 3D.

However, my sensible head Confused tells me to stop being ridiculous, my current monstrosity of a TV is in perfect working order and is only 8 years old so why on earth should I even be thinking of upgrading?

So, should I wait another 2 years when current TV will be 10 years old and it sits easier for me to renew it then.......plus I'll probably get a better model for less money in 2 years or should I throw caution to the wind and order one on line before I finish my 2nd bottle of wine? Grin
What would you do?

My partner sold his old Sony tv (big silver one with matching shelves) for over £100 when he decided he wanted a bigger slimline one,.... He bought the new one with the money bottle money (all of his change for the last 5 years) + the money for his old tv from eBay..... I think the

DeathMetalMum · 30/06/2012 21:33

My mum currently has a 16in tiny little portable tv as their main tv as their larger crt recently broke. She is refusing to replace it with a larger one, much to the upset of my dad and brother. YANBU

PelvicFloorOfSteel · 30/06/2012 21:36

I have a crt too, I don't know how old it is but I bought it secondhand about 10ish years ago, it does the job, although we need a digibox to get freeview. I can't picture getting a new one until this one breaks down.

piratecat · 30/06/2012 21:36

you're not the only one. where would my cat sleep if i got a new one?

Xmasbaby11 · 30/06/2012 21:37

Don't know what crt is but suspect we have one! Probably 10 years old? Still works fine. We don't tend to replace things that work.

lucysnowe · 30/06/2012 21:38

That is totally freaky. are you me? Was about to post the same thing! Dh is a little um close and our current old model is perfectly fine only it does make a kind of hunch sound when it is switched on. But I do feel a bit shameful when other people co me roujnd! Was looking at flatscreens on ebay, they are pretty cheap actually and can only bet cheaper...

OlympicFlame · 30/06/2012 21:40

We had one until last month. We refused to buy a new one until it died. My DH was so happy as he'd been researching the perfect television for years.

thekidsrule · 30/06/2012 21:40

nope i have the old tv to, much to my teenage kids disgust,

they say we look poor,i just laugh

but they do have flats screen,hd in bedroom so they dont have a case as far as im concerned

MrsJohnMurphy · 30/06/2012 21:41

We have a 32" crappy TESCO own brand hdtv in the living room, it's fine and all but I prefer the 28" 2 ton 2nd hand Toshiba monstrosity that was relegated to upstairs. It cost £20 2nd hand about 5 years ago and is still going strong, it also doesn't have the annoying light bleed at the edges that the flat screen has on dark pictures.

newlark · 30/06/2012 21:42

We still have an old CRT TV - used to belong to my parents before they moved to flat screen and still going strong! Wouldn't replace something that is still working!

Christelle2207 · 30/06/2012 21:46

I only just got rid of my SIXTEEN yo telly. Got JL vouchers do off we went to get our new hd flat screen, very nice it is too. 8 years is not that old but Yanbu.

sheepsgomeeping · 30/06/2012 21:46

Ive only just got rid of mine, well ds now has it in his room. Mine was over ten years old and its still going strong.

Earlier on this year I had a tax rebate that I should have had a few years back so the first thing I bought was a telly.

I love it

ChaosTrulyReigns · 30/06/2012 21:47

What's a CTR TV?

[suspicious]

ilovesooty · 30/06/2012 21:51

you're not the only one. where would my cat sleep if i got a new one?

Me too!

RedBlanket · 30/06/2012 21:51

A telly from the olden days which Has the huge black box thing at the back. They weigh a ton.

McHappyPants2012 · 30/06/2012 21:55

I would love my CTR tv back alot easier to clean than this HD big screen that hurts my eyes thing

You certainly aren't the only ones.

We got ours from a charity shop too Grin, er, when the prvious one we'd had (given to us by friends when they got a flatscreen) broke down!

Our video player works well with it too Wink

mamasmissionimpossible · 30/06/2012 22:22

We have a CRT monster here too, you aren't alone. TBH I would love a flat screen, but with a ds2 soon to be a toddler, we don't want to get one until he is past the 'wiping sticky fingers on everything stage'

smokinaces · 30/06/2012 22:27

I've got a big backed tv. Twas a freebie from a family member last year when my ten year one died. If this dies ill get another freebie big backed. Much cheaper, and less likely to get trashed by two fighting monkeys children

BridgetJonesPants · 30/06/2012 22:30

Thanks for all the replies folks, I didn't realise there were so many sensible posters on Mumsnet. Anyway, decision made, the old TV stays for at least a couple more years and I'll buy some nice bottles of wine insteadGrin.

I think the Harry Potter film may be subliminally advertising wide screen tvs as we had a similar thought. Our tv must be 25 years old. I think the sound on the Potter film was just rubbish and the lighting just doesn't work. I mean Justin' s House looks and sounds fine on our tv so hey, let's stick with it.

marriedinwhite · 30/06/2012 22:45

We have a slimline flat black one in the sitting room but it's only 26". The DC have my parents original chunky widescreen one in the basement - they link it up to Xbox and wii and everything Grin. I want one in the bedroom but DH won't have it.

Lyftiduft · 30/06/2012 22:49

we have one too. Far more toddler proof than a flat screen- hard to knock over and easier to clean off sticky fingers! and why would you bother changing something that still works?
