AIBU to want /buy a new TV?

Basically I'm sitting here watching a Harry Potter movie with my favourite Wine but feeling a bit Sad that I don't have a nice 42 or 48 inch slim line TV....maybe even one with 3D.

However, my sensible head Confused tells me to stop being ridiculous, my current monstrosity of a TV is in perfect working order and is only 8 years old so why on earth should I even be thinking of upgrading?

So, should I wait another 2 years when current TV will be 10 years old and it sits easier for me to renew it then.......plus I'll probably get a better model for less money in 2 years or should I throw caution to the wind and order one on line before I finish my 2nd bottle of wine? Grin
What would you do?

COCKadoodledooo · 01/07/2012 07:56

Ours is 13 years old. Couldn't bring myself to replace it and couldn't afford it anyway -

COCKadoodledooo · 01/07/2012 07:57

That was also meant to say YABU. Clearly crap with modern technology Hmm

Bunbaker · 01/07/2012 08:02

So, do you all have digiboxes as well?

COCKadoodledooo · 01/07/2012 09:05

Yes bun. Ours is the outlaws old Sky box and we have Freesat. Was quite weird initially - we're in the south and all the ads on itv etc were for local stuff in the north west!

garlicbutt · 01/07/2012 16:04

I've got Freesat, bun. I have to set the telly to RGB colour instead of what the instructions with the box said (or t'other way round, can't remember). My box is the free one, it's ridiculously slow when combined with the prehistoric TV!

A few months ago they brought broadband up to 16mbps here, now it's a damn sight easier to watch the laptop. Means I miss out on a few things, but not so you'd notice.

The outlying villages, like my mum's, only have up to 2mbps and can't receive Freesat. Half a mile further out, they don't get any broadband or mobile signal. It's weird how you can switch centuries in a ten-minute drive!

newlark · 01/07/2012 16:04

MIL has only recently upgraded from a tiny black and white 1970s TV (in a cream plastic surround to my old (1994) 17" colour CRT which is still going strong :)

NettoSuperstar · 01/07/2012 16:06

I've got a massive old TV that my Dad gave me a few years ago.
It doesn't bother me at all, I can still watch what I want on it.

NettoSuperstar · 01/07/2012 16:08

I had Freesat, but got Sky installed for the F1 channel, which will get turned off at the end of the season.
I will admit to being totally addicted to my Sky now though, but only watch Sports for the F1.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 01/07/2012 16:13

Another one here with a CRT - and will never change it - except for another one! I hate the flatscreens, ALL of them.

I work in the industry and I'm an embarrassment to it... Blush

albertswearengen · 01/07/2012 16:21

I was so disappointed when dh bought our new expensive Panasonic top of the range TV and plugged it in going on about how thin it was but the picture was pants compared to our old CRT. I still have an early 80's portable and it's great.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 01/07/2012 16:23

We had one of those big massive boxy TVs until two years ago and had resisted getting a wall mounted flat screen even though we were being teased by friends and family for being so old fashioned!

One day my DS ( then age 4) was jumping around as usual but he tripped and fell. As he tripped he grabbed at the TV to try and stop himself falling and it came crashing down , missing my DD's head by about an inch.

She was only one at the time and was just sitting on the floor in front of the Tv playing with her toys. How it missed her I will never understand but luckily it did.

It all happened so fast I would never have got across the room in time to stop it.

That night the TV went in the garage ready for the tip and I refused to have it in the house anymore.

nothingoldcanstay · 01/07/2012 16:26

Mine is so old it still has a video player built in. I love it. Looks like a TV not nasty black plastic picture on the wall.

garlicbutt · 01/07/2012 16:27

Grin Witch! Go on then, tell us why you hast flatscreens ...

garlicbutt · 01/07/2012 16:27

hast = hate

garlicbutt · 01/07/2012 16:31

Looks like a TV not nasty black plastic picture on the wall.

They do look intrusive when hung on the wall! (I want one one the wall because my rooms are so tiny, though.) I suppose you can get round it by using a screensaver - but that looks weird, too.

If/when I get one, maybe I'll take a photo of the wall and use that as a screensaver Confused

picnicbasketcase · 01/07/2012 16:36

We still have a CRT tv as well. It's MASSIVE. Would like a flat screen one but can't justify it cos there's nothing wrong with it and DH is weirdly fond of it.

AllPastYears · 01/07/2012 16:58

We have a CRT bought in 1995 (am I the winner?!) Will replace it when it gives up the ghost and not before unless DH gets a say.

pointythings · 01/07/2012 17:01

We have only 1 TV and it's a big old fat one. We're not replacing it until it dies, end of. It's almost 10 years old and still absolutely fine.

Yes, it would be nice to have a HD skinny TV and we could easily afford one, but that isn't what we're teaching the DDs.

MilkNoSugarAndAShotofWhisky · 01/07/2012 17:09

We have a 40inch ctr tv...have no idea how the hell we're going to get it down 3 flights of stairs when We move next week! It weighs an unbelievable ton!

Needless to day we're buying a new plasma jobbie...purely for ease :o

HeadsShouldersKneesandToes · 01/07/2012 17:11

We have a CRT - and will keep it till it breaks (or till we need to sell this house and want to crate an illusion of more space if that happens first) so no, not the last!

DilysPrice · 01/07/2012 17:29

We have a flat screen now, passed down from PILs who've upgraded to a massive 3D HD job. DH now has the old CRT in his shed, but I miss it.
As HLL says the picture simply isn't as good with flat screens unless you spend ££££££

Emilie, yes I'm sure you can get your vintage Lowe connected to a Freeview box. Just plug things in at random and be prepared to chat up someone from an independent hardware store to talk you through the necessary cables.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 01/07/2012 18:57

garlicbutt... I hate everything about them, namely:

Picture quality - pixellated and not improved with any amount of fiddling/re-tuning. Everybody looks short and dumpy onscreen as they've been 'squashed' to fit a wider but not higher screen.

Sound quality - echo-ey and 'blunt' and my mother's (worst of all at 50" in a tiny house) dominates the whole room and the sound bounces off the walls.

I don't watch much tv but I have many, many box sets - Poirot, Foyle's War, Midsomer Murders, etc. - you get the gist. These are period set and look infinitely more polished on a CRT.

Then the recycling of them... I visit many sites and watch electricals being dismantled and I see so many flatscreens in already - often the same latest models in shops. That tells me what I need to know about the quality. I see very few CRTs coming in but do recall having a lovely chat with a teary man in Norfolk whose Grundig of 25 years had finally stopped working (the tube). I could have cried with him...

I just plain HATE flatscreens. Grin

Shullbit · 01/07/2012 19:07

Only room we have a slimline tv in is our bedroom and that is only because it was bought for us as a joint Christmas present after we decorated our room. The livingroom and other bedroom still have huge chunky old CRT televisions in them and they are still going really strong.

glastocat · 01/07/2012 19:15

We've got only one big old tele as well, it's 13 years old. Twice is has pretended to be dying (screen has gone green) and just as we have been on the point of ordering a new one, it has come back to life. My ten year old does moan that the tv is older than him. We're moving next year, will have to get a new one then.

oiwheresthecoffee · 01/07/2012 19:24

I have a massive old heavy TV. Even my elderly relatives have better TVs than i do. I do not give a shiney shit. I prefer to spend my money on other expensive things (of which i can always find more of ) than update my tv.
