AIBU to think that neighbour's son shouldn't have hammered on the door at 6.45am for no good reason?

This morning, mad hammering at the back door at 6.45am - wtf? DS2 was in bed so it wasn't him trying to get in after a big night out and no key.

DH went down to find next-door-but-one teenage DS who wanted to point out that it was pouring with rain and the car window was open, interior of car was soaked. So far, so neighbourly - except - IT'S NOT OUR CAR YOU TWIT!

Our car was parked, as always, in front of the house. This car, nothing like our car, was parked outside the back of neighbour-on-the-other-side house AND ITS NOT HER CAR EITHER. Angry

AIBU to think that he shouldn't have knocked?

YABU. He was trying to be neighbourly.

ivykaty44 · 30/06/2012 16:28

carabos - lots of the older generation have teen daughters and sons - doesn't stop them having a downer on the next generation

BettySuarez · 30/06/2012 16:29

It's ok that he might not have done anything about it, but it's not ok that you have chosen to deride someone who did

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 30/06/2012 16:30

Yabu

It's precisely the fact that it was raining, and early (no-one likely to get up and notice themselves) that he thought it was a good idea to warn you.

HolyCameraConfusionBatman · 30/06/2012 16:34

carabos In the situation you describe; up early, noticed the window, someone's car getting soaked. It's a shame that he wouldn't try and help his neighbours by letting them know about the car. Given the choice I'd rather have the other boy as a neighbour.

IloveJudgeJudy · 30/06/2012 16:35

YABU. I too have teenage sons. I think your neighbour's has been very thoughtful. If it had been your car, you would have been pretty pleased, I should think, as the rain recently has been very heavy.

Are you insinuating that he got you up just to be horrible? I do hope not.

carabos · 30/06/2012 16:38

judgejudy as I said upthread, I don't think he was being horrible, he is a nice lad. I don't believe anyone would put their coat on over their pjs and go up and down the street knocking on doors at 6.45am on a Saturday trying to find the owner of a car that was getting wet. Sorry, but I just don't buy that.

OP posts:
IloveJudgeJudy · 30/06/2012 16:39

People do do that, though. I would have done it, particularly if I had thought it was one of my neighbour's cars. I have knocked on people's doors if I've seen their car lights on, too.

BettySuarez · 30/06/2012 16:40

I would Grin

SoleSource · 30/06/2012 16:44

Non-stop pouring of rain of which didn't look like stopping soon and he was sure in his mind it was your car he is NBU.
He was being thoughtful. Next time he might not bother and you may wish he had.

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 30/06/2012 16:44

OP

Well, he did, so what are you saying?

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 30/06/2012 16:45

Ok YANBU then.
Confused Why did you ask if you're so sure you are being reasonable?

valiumredhead · 30/06/2012 16:47

I left our car windows open last year -I would be very pleased if someone had pointed it out, even if it was a mistake.

HolyCameraConfusionBatman · 30/06/2012 16:47

I don't understand Carabos because you keep saying he wasn't being annoying/unkind/vindictive and then you say 'I don't believe anyone would put their coat on over their pjs and go up and down the street knocking on doors at 6.45am on a Saturday trying to find the owner of a car that was getting wet'.

What are you saying his motivation was?!

SoupDragon · 30/06/2012 16:48

FGS, poor lad.

carabos · 30/06/2012 16:50

I'm sure his motive was kind. He's that sort of boy. Someone upthread said that in the same position, they would have put their coat on over their pjs and gone out to help him find the owner of the car. i don't believe anyone would do that.

OP posts:
Panzee · 30/06/2012 16:53

But somebody did do that. You saw him. Unless you're hinting at a sinister motive?

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 30/06/2012 16:53

If his motive was good, it's simply that he made a mistake. We all do that. The motive is what matters. Arguing makes you sound mean. And people do put themselves out for others - he did, so why doubt any of us would??

Just because you wouldn't .......

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 30/06/2012 16:53

Hinting shminting.

LadySybilPussPolham · 30/06/2012 16:55

This just seems completely pointless

comedycentral · 30/06/2012 16:56

Really? I think loads of people would try to help. I honestly do.

carabos · 30/06/2012 16:56

Again - I don't believe he had a sinister motive. I think he didn't think it through, in the way that teenage boys often don't think things through.

OP posts:
HolyCameraConfusionBatman · 30/06/2012 16:58

Just out of interest, how old is he? Big difference between 13 and 19

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 30/06/2012 16:58

Ok, he didn't think it through, he made a mistake about whose car it was, but he thought he'd warn the owner of the car, who he thought was you.

You have no argument left.

Panzee · 30/06/2012 16:59

So what's the problem exactly? Lack of sleep? You probably need a nap or something.
