Just to add to the other six million 50 shades threads Grin

Btw, I will point out that I haven't actually read them, though I have become slightly addicted to reading the funny blogs and reviews (and of course, the cookie monster reading on YouTube!)

How are so many women missing that he is abusive? Wtf?

Rapist?

Moominsarescary · 29/06/2012 10:33

Abusive rapest? Did I read a different book?

AlbertoFrog · 29/06/2012 10:33

It's obvious you haven't read them when you make an ignorant comment like that.

Moominsarescary · 29/06/2012 10:34

Rapist

pictish · 29/06/2012 10:35

I must have missed the rape scene then.

Don't get me wrong - the books are load of old shit...but can't recall a rape.

Trills · 29/06/2012 10:35

YABU to be concerned about something that you have made up, yes.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 29/06/2012 10:35

Bear with me, I'm trying to find a quote...

EasilyBored · 29/06/2012 10:37

Rape? I think we must be reading different books...

georgesmummy11 · 29/06/2012 10:40

Think you has read the wrong book certainly no rape !!!

AlbertoFrog · 29/06/2012 10:40

The OP hasn't read the books *EasilyBored" Hmm

fruitysummer · 29/06/2012 10:40

No rape that I'm aware of.........unless it happens in the later books which i've not got round to reading yet.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 29/06/2012 10:44

Can't find the quote i saw but will keep looking...

And it wasn't a case of "Christian then rapes her" btw, it was something about her saying no and him fucking her anyway

OP posts:
queenrollo · 29/06/2012 10:45

He's a sulky childish twat, and a rubbish Dom - but he's not a rapist.

I read the first book....I forced myself to finish it. It's an unmitigated pile of crap.

EasilyBored · 29/06/2012 10:45

.. and that doesn't happen either. Read the books before you start waffling on about their content.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 29/06/2012 10:46

And anyway, even without me finding that quote, what is the general opinion re me saying he is abusive? Can you deny that?

OP posts:
StripyMagicDragon · 29/06/2012 10:46

I haven't read the books, as they don't appeal to me. From what I understand, they are about a bdsm relationship. In a real bdsm relationship there would be ground rules and safety words or a stopping point. I'm not aware if this is in the book, but it's not rape. Is it not described as a sexy romance book? I'm sure any rape scenes would have been mentioned in the shedloads of press about it.
Anyway, you can't judge a book by what others say about it or by collecting quotes that can be taken out of context. You have to read it yourself and see what it is and what you think it's about.

Moominsarescary · 29/06/2012 10:48

I've read the first two books, she hasn't said no yet. Actually she seems to do an awful lot of pleading with him to put it in.

queenrollo · 29/06/2012 10:48

stripy yes there is a contract of rules in the book, which they negotiate...

pictish · 29/06/2012 10:49

Word of advice OP - read the books then invite discussion.
You can't opinionate on whether on not he is abusive, and argue your case, because you have not read the books.

Debate fail.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 29/06/2012 10:49

But that's the whole point - it is a fantasy. I'm sure that in RL women would not go near him, but as a fantasy what is the problem.

BTW, there is no rape that I recall, but even if there was it is a work of fiction. Obviously rape in RL is very, very wrong - but as a fantasy?

EasilyBored · 29/06/2012 10:49

He's controlling and emotionally messed up, and I think he's a total douche, but I wouldn't go as fas as abusive.

The books are trash. They're turn-your-brain-off reading. I wouldn't read them again, and I'm not having sex dreams about Christian Grey. But they aren't what you're claiming them to be either. Stop spouting crap about something you haven't even bothered to read.

queenrollo · 29/06/2012 10:49

moomins she does an awful lot of lip biting. I could gleefully split that lip for her. It's irritating.

CrustyBurd · 29/06/2012 10:50

Its not rape. Its consensual domination. Very, very different.

Domination may not be for everyone. But rape is for no one.

takingiteasy · 29/06/2012 10:50

For all the books are shit he's no rapist. The whole sub Dom set up fascinates me. It's a lifestyle built on trust, consent, boundaries and respect.
