To be concerned about the amount of women fantising about an abusive rapist...

Just to add to the other six million 50 shades threads Grin

Btw, I will point out that I haven't actually read them, though I have become slightly addicted to reading the funny blogs and reviews (and of course, the cookie monster reading on YouTube!)

How are so many women missing that he is abusive? Wtf?

Don't take the huff at me lady! Grin
You're the one who started a thread to critisise the theme and tone of a book you haven't actually read! Lol!

Go read it - it will take you about a day if you skim. Wink

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 29/06/2012 11:12

Sgb, the thing that concerned me about it really is that I have no problem with someone fantisising about being dominated or even raped if that is what floats their boat. What bothered me (from the quotes again, yes I know, less valid opinion... Plus my friends posts about it on Facebook) was the suggestion that he is the ideal man.

Again, I know it is fiction, and no, I haven't read it properly. But it seems a bit misogynistic to me. But I'm not really an expert on that either...

Would it be inn appropriate to listen to the audiobook with the kids here? Grin

Oh btw, I did read the free kindle sample, and it was so bad that this is why I started googling reviews and blogs. I really don't want to pay for it and give her more money!

squeakytoy · 29/06/2012 11:16

I would imagine for the average reader, the fact that he is a billionaire, has a helicopter, and is lavishing her with gifts, while giving her multiple orgasms at every opportunity makes him sound like the ideal man... and very unlikely to ever be the average readers reality.

pictish · 29/06/2012 11:17

Well...if you read the book you will get some perspective of where the women you so vehemently disagree with are coming from, won't you?

Actually reading the book you wish to debate isn't like a technicality you know. Rofl!

Moominsarescary · 29/06/2012 11:18

And hes touching her sex, ffs couldn't they think of a different word for it

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 29/06/2012 11:19

Pictish, im not huffing I promise, just laughing at my own stupidity for starting an aibu about it. I'm sleep depraved, it makes me over opinionated and pearl-clutchy (or bite-lippy...)

You should have seen me on the this morning Facebook page the other day, arguing about benefits with everyone else....... Grin

Sleep depraved sounds slightly sadist.

Beyond. In 3 months it will be available in every charity shop.

solidgoldbrass · 29/06/2012 11:25

I am really beginning to wonder if that crock of shit isn't somehow being used by the vague free-floating Patriarchy Conspiracy. Not just the book, which seems to be one bad writer's personal fantasies, but the hype - there's a not very subtle message going out to women - REAL women are stupid and love being beaten. KNOW YOUR PLACE and love the master's cock. So much is being made of the fact that so many women love the book - despite the vast numbers of women who are either not into BDSM, not submissive, or who actually have read enough well-written erotica to see how awful 50 shades is and therefore condemn it.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 29/06/2012 11:25

Oo, I could take it on holiday then.

And everyone will be laughing at me and saying "that is soooo three months ago"

OP posts:
pictish · 29/06/2012 11:27

Download it onto your phone if you have one of them type phones, or a tablet or a kindle or whatever....then no-one need know how three months ago you are. Grin

I feel sorry for the author. She will now be under the impression she's good at what she does.

What is her name?! I assumed it was E L James as in Emma Lisa James or whatever but I heard someone on tv call her El James, as in Elle.

SoleSource · 29/06/2012 11:28

squeaky if only..Grin

The charity shops will be swamped with them just like the Da Vinci code!

Moominsarescary · 29/06/2012 11:30

Two of my friends really enjoyed them and passed them on to me, I'll read anything.

To me it reads of a man abused emotionally and physically as a child, abused as a teenager by an older women who seems to have her own issues with relationships. Who as an adult has problems with relationships and his need to control everything due to having non as a child.

Agree with midgetm though, he's a bloody stalker

sweetkitty · 29/06/2012 11:40

I am seriously going to defriend someone on FB all she does is go on about Mr Grey he's a childish, arrogant, fucked up control freak. Ana is an idiot.

I read the 3 books about a month ago, have read much better and dirtier, maybe for a lot of women it's the first time they have read anything erotic but all this going to bed with Mr Grey and reenacting the (badly written) sex scenes makes me heave.

Completely naive and idiotic 22 yo college graduate meet fall in love, loads of badly written sex, get married have kids live happily ever after with loads of sex and a bit of BDSM now and again

OptimisticPessimist · 29/06/2012 12:16

I think the bizzybiz blog about it has at least one example of what the blogger desribes as rape (and the blogger is into BDSM and has a pretty good knowledge of it, so it's not that)

Think it might be this one: bizzybiz.blogspot.co.uk/2012/06/50-tears-of-woe.html?m=1 but there's a few installments so might have got the wrong one.

OP, YANBU.

StarlightWithAsteroid · 29/06/2012 12:18

A friend's fb status was 'Mr Grey, Here I come!'

I did NOT need to read that!

solidgoldbrass · 29/06/2012 15:18

And another thing: when I was running the Guild we used to hate (and reject) stuff that was basically 'Person only does kinky sex because person is messed up, the more sex a character has the more likely s/he is to suffer horrible consequences.'

FrothyOM · 29/06/2012 15:33

These women must be a right bunch of wankers. Grin

Whatmeworry · 29/06/2012 17:02

What's this "holy crap" business? Puts me in mind of batman

Oh no, thats all about rubber and leather and masks. And bats. Probably pet shopping with wings is more fun, I dunno....
