I'm coming up to 36 and can't ttc for a little while (hopefully just a few months) due to unrelated medical investigations. But I'm getting jittery about my age and the fact that my blood group is O+. Have seen plenty of articles online about how women who are blood group O have a much faster decline in fertility than women who are A or B. And I've been searching for anecdotal evidence on forums that this isn't always the case but can't find anything.

I know that other peoples' experiences will have no bearing on whether I'll be able to conceive myself when the time comes but I'm still desperately hoping for some reassurance that there are older mums out there who are also blood group O.

Anyone?? I'm also prepared to hear the opposite, that it really is far less likely to happen if you're blood type O...

I'm O+, DS4 was born just before I turned 43.

High FSH levels indicate low reserves of eggs in the ovary. This is a general "rule".

The research showed that in a group of women with known fertility problems, O+ women had higher FSH levels than A+ women of the same age....... HOWEVER this does not prove that the blood group is the cause of the infertility (it may be that other factors which cause infertility are more common in woman with O+ blood), and it does NOT mean that in the general population, that O+ women will find conception more difficult............

Waving at Rezolution another B+ here, babies at 34 & 37. I don't know if it counts in men too but my Dad is also B+ and he was an older father too.

albertswearengen · 28/06/2012 16:07

DartsAgain · 28/06/2012 16:26

O Neg, first baby at 31 and second at 35. NO difficulty TTC, despite being overweight as well.

SkinnyMalinkiLongLegs · 28/06/2012 16:36

Freshletticia · 28/06/2012 18:25

O+ , DD2 was born when I was 43. Conceived in 2 months. Hth.

passivehoovering · 28/06/2012 18:34

B-

Conceived age 35. Was pregnant again at 36, 3 months after having DC, but mc. But mc was probably to do with having cancer

Shagmundfreud · 28/06/2012 18:39

I've never heard that OP.

I'm AB negative.

Had dc's at 33, 38 and 39. Took ages to conceive dc2, but dc one and three were accidents. DC3 was the result of the only shag we had that month. Blush

AThingInYourLife · 28/06/2012 18:54

O-

DD1 - 32 (conceived first month)
DD2 - 34 (conceived second month)
DC3 - coming tomorrow, am 36 (conceived after 10 months due to thyroid problems)

holyfishnets · 28/06/2012 18:55

Never heard of that. I'm A+ and had infertility issues which have been resolved now.

What I would say is that if you have been trying for a while, ask your GP for a day 21 progesterone test (done 21 days after your period starts). I had regular periods and other ovulation signs but my test results were always too low to show a healthy strong ovulation. A bit of help from a tablet called clomid and suddenly I had three boys. Ovulation issues account for a HUGE percentage of fertility issues and often only minimal help is needed to resolve. Also request GP checks your hormone levels and your DH's sperm.

If your GP is slow, go private for assessments. I wish I had done! All that wasted and stressful time TTC.

holyfishnets · 28/06/2012 18:56

Mine was secondary infertility by the way as we conceived eldest without issues.

Rezolution · 28/06/2012 19:00

Hiya Stanley. That is interesting. Looked up B+ on wikipedia and it is from northern India and only stretches so far West into Europe. The further West you go the lower the number of B+ people. I think UK has about 8%
For what it's worth my maternal Grandfather was born to a lady of 48 who married a young man of 24. She was a widow and already had two older children from her first marriage.

RubyGates · 28/06/2012 19:57

O, baby at 43.

OuEstCoco · 28/06/2012 20:28

Thanks SCOTCHandWRY I was hoping that it wasn't an absolute certainty that O+ blood would make your fertility decline earlier. When I first saw an article on it, I googled it in hopes that there would be conflicting advice/evidence as it worried me so much but the only other articles I found all said the same thing.

Thanks, everybody, for the replies. I'm really grateful to you all for responding and it's very reassuring to hear that conception has been possible (and fairly straightforward) for so many people. I hope I'm as lucky when the time comes! :)
