need to ask advice re neck injury in child

7yo dd hurt het neck at gymnastics tonight, doing a backward roll. She said she felt a crack and the bones changing places (Confused quite a graphic description)

I've given her nurofen and a heat pack, but she is crying with the pain when she moves, although not consistently.

NHS direct have 5 hour call back wait and I can't get through to OOH drs.

Is it the dame advice as adults-just give it time. Or ad a child should I ne getting jet checked?

Sorry. OS not an AIBU

Take her to a&e .

Cathycomehome · 25/06/2012 20:03

I would get it checked. Hope she's ok.

ZZZenAgain · 25/06/2012 20:03

I would go and get it checked. I wouldn't get any sleep for worrying about it

yankbabymum · 25/06/2012 20:05

Get her to A&E and take the heat pack off - heat can make swelling or injuries worse

I think it would be best to get it checked out. Your poor DD. Hope all is ok.

MammaTJ · 25/06/2012 20:08

This is definately one time when you can justifiably use A&E! Good luck, I hope it doesn't end up being serious.

phantomnamechanger · 25/06/2012 20:08

you can't mess around with necks, take her to a&e

crashdoll · 25/06/2012 20:09

I'd take her to A&E. Neck injuries can be serious and although unlikely, I wouldn't leave it.

bejeezus · 25/06/2012 20:11

She seems ALOT better now!!! Has stopped crying, walking about! Maybe nurofen has kicked in?

Does have limited movement though

Maybe take her in the morning?

I would get it checked. I damaged my neck very seriously aged seven, just tripping over a kerb!

eastendywendy · 25/06/2012 20:12

A+E and I never say that!

eastendywendy · 25/06/2012 20:13

I'd honestly take her tonight.

I think the same as Natasha. If she is badly hurt, you wouldn't want her sleeping in a position which could make it worse. I would go if you can

phantomnamechanger · 25/06/2012 20:20

OP, listen, I know it might be difficult and disruptive and all that to have to go off to a&e, and you fear you may look like a fussy mum, but there is not another person on here who is saying "leave it and see". we can't give you that reassurance of "it'll be ok" - you need to go get it looked at. heaven forbid if she slept on it badly and ended up making things far worse!

phantomnamechanger · 25/06/2012 20:21

x-posts with 2 other people there

ChasedByBees · 25/06/2012 20:21

I would take her now - if there is an injury and the nurofen has dulled the pain, she could make it worse.

Aboutlastnight · 25/06/2012 20:22

Don't bother with OOH, A&E - you'll be sent there anyway.

lovebunny · 25/06/2012 20:23

take her to the hospital right away. don't put your coat on, just go.

this is your child. stop hanging around.

mum's friend fell and broke her neck - walked around with a broken neck for seven years then...

i jumped down off a low table and broke my leg...

i fell off a bunk bed as a child and broke my arm

small accidents can be nothing, or everything - take her to a+e.

Viviennemary · 25/06/2012 20:24

I'd take her to A & E right away.

Aboutlastnight · 25/06/2012 20:24

Also casualty has a the right equipment - x ray machines and the like... I would take mine if she was crying and in obvious discomfort.

Loonytoonie · 25/06/2012 20:25

Neurofen is doing its job. Rather too well, perhaps. She could wake up in a worse state OP. A&E.

NO doubt about it. Go.

ZZZenAgain · 25/06/2012 20:26

hope she is alright. If she felt the bones in her neck change place, well I can't help thinking that needs looking at.

alphabite · 25/06/2012 20:26

A&E straight away. It is more likely the crack was the discs rather than the bones. They crack when they inflate or deflate but it's not worth taking the risk with a child or a neck. Go to hospital now please. It's probably nothing serious but it's still better to get checked.
