7yo dd hurt het neck at gymnastics tonight, doing a backward roll. She said she felt a crack and the bones changing places (Confused quite a graphic description)

I've given her nurofen and a heat pack, but she is crying with the pain when she moves, although not consistently.

NHS direct have 5 hour call back wait and I can't get through to OOH drs.

Is it the dame advice as adults-just give it time. Or ad a child should I ne getting jet checked?

Sorry. OS not an AIBU

Got through to NHS direct. They advised home care, no need to go to hospital unless anything changes

Spoke to A&E who wouldn't give out phone advice, but said there wad a 5 hour plus wait at the moment

So, think ill take her in the morning, to the hospital or GP if I can get through

Bejeezus - I think you forgot to say thank you at the end of your last thread? I know you must be worried but you posted asking for opinions and people gave them.

Just sayin..

bejeezus · 25/06/2012 21:04

Yrs, sorry....thank you for all your advice

Bit frazzled, typing one handed...trying to need a screaming teethimg many and tired dd1 with neck injury, towards bed...

But, I didnt mean to sound ungrateful...very much appreciate time taken and advice. Will definitely het her checked in morning, whereas prior to thread I might not have. Just seems pointless to go and wait in A&E for 5 hours.ay ad well wait at home

Smile

I wouldn't be pissing about with her neck.

If she sleeps on it and causes more damage??

Softlysoftly · 25/06/2012 21:17

Personally I would say A&E now but then I smashed my collarbone as a annoying regularly whiny about nothing crying wolf child, mum didn't believe me made me carry on as normal including riding the bloody horse that broke it and when Dad eventually took me to A&E it was so pulled out of place I ended up in special braces.

If you aren't going to then apply cold not hot to reduce swelling and remove pain relief so she can feel and avoid movements that are painful rather than push through them and cause damage.

bejeezus · 25/06/2012 21:24

I think I would take her tonight, if it wasn't so busy....but ee wouldn't be seen as a priority; she appears fine now.....so we would be waiting the 5 hours odd there. We may as well wait in the comfort of our home

Nurse advised hot compress

Hot dilates blood vessels to area, so reducing swelling if applied immediately after event. Cold is useful if you get to injury late IIRC?

Take her first thing and don't take her to school until its checked. I wouldnt listen to nhs direct personally. She needs a scan or xray. Someone over the phone can't diagnose regardless of how qualified they are with a neck injury.

alphabite · 25/06/2012 23:00

Fwiw my doc told me heat pads for my neck and back not cold

bejeezus · 26/06/2012 10:07

Been to the Dr....its just a muscle strain, thank goodness. Spine is fine

Thanks again for advice Smile
