I keep hearing it on R2, it by a girl group called Stooshe.

Black Heart
I don't like it when you break me honey
Why'd you have to do that?
Tell me when you make these tears keep fallin?
Do you feel like a man?
Figure figure, there's no working you out whatsoever
Only one way I could sum you up all together
You've got a black heart
Daddy I've fallen for a monster
Somehow he's scaring me to death
Ah yes he is He's big and he's bad I love him like mad
Mamma he's the best I ever had
Daddy I've fallen for a monster
He got a black heart

so.... the premise is that this singer has fallen madly i love with a violent man who is scaring her to death, but she loves him like mad and hes the best she ever had, so thats ok then.... Confused

Is it just me or this really creepy.

It could also be interpreted as a woman recognizing that she's in an abusive relationship, blaming the man for his abuse and gathering her strength to bin him.

TheOneWithTheHair · 25/06/2012 10:49

Very scary. I read it the same way you did. :(

It's worrying that people think its ok for young girls to sing this. It's not romantic it's really frightening.

pictish · 25/06/2012 10:50

So...should songs only be about hearts and flowers then?

SingingSands · 25/06/2012 10:52

I know the one - the lyrics don't sit comfortably with me either.

But then, there are so many songs out there that are similar or worse, that it makes me cringe when I hear my DD (8) singing along. Although I am aware that I can read more into the lyrics than she can, she just like singing along with catchy tunes.

fruitysummer · 25/06/2012 10:54

I heard the chorus and was a bit Shock at the words, but i'd been happily humming along to it for sometime before they actually started to register.

One of my favourite songs as a child was Golden Brown and I turned out all right, never ever taken any form of drug!

SingingSands · 25/06/2012 10:55

Pitctish - hopefully not, and I am glad we live in a society where there is freedom of expression, but if I hear something that doesn't sit right with me I am quite happy to switch the radio station - to Talk Sport!

I think the thing to remember is that if we hear a message we don't think is appropriate it is our job as parents to switch it off or explain it.

TheOneWithTheHair · 25/06/2012 10:55

Not that kind of romantic pictish. Even if solidgoldbrass is right I think it is open to wrong interpretation.

It doesn't take much for a young girl to romanticise a situation or to think its normal to go through a violent relationship if it's so common that people make pop songs about it.

It isn't exactly definitively against violence is it?

lolaflores · 25/06/2012 10:55

Hearts and flowers wreathed with thorns in this case. A mixed message.

MaisieM · 25/06/2012 10:57

YADNBU. I've been thinking exactly the same thing for the last few weeks everytime I've heard it!

pictish · 25/06/2012 10:59

Well...I would hope that my guidance and influence will have a more long term and deeper impact on my kids than pop songs, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

There has to be freedom of expression....and the fact is, the situation the song refers to is common.

We cannot censor life - all we can do is guide our kids to make healthy choices. Who gives a shit what Stooshe sing?

StealthPolarBear · 25/06/2012 10:59

Reminds me of papa don't preach, which is also disturbing!

Shakey1500 · 25/06/2012 10:59

I'm missing something. Where does it insinuate/say he's violent?

NinaHeart · 25/06/2012 11:01

"Golden Brown" is about drugs?????? WAHHHHHHHHHHH.....

StealthPolarBear · 25/06/2012 11:01

Break me...monster...big

ScarletLadyOfTheNight01 · 25/06/2012 11:02

They're shit anyway...Their first tune was begging men to fuck them >_< To be fair though, they do preach a safe sex message.

StealthPolarBear · 25/06/2012 11:02

Didn't you know that Nina? I used to think someone cleverer than me could turn that into a song about Gordon, when he was pm :o

AlmostAHipster · 25/06/2012 11:03

Hmmm. I love this song and totally took it to mean that she bemoaning the fact that her boyfriend was awful and that she'd have to end it.

It didn't occur to me that it might be viewed as a good thing.

TheOneWithTheHair · 25/06/2012 11:03

Fair point pictish. I would like to think I had more influence over my dd than a pop song too.

CharltonHairstyle · 25/06/2012 11:03

singing YABU to listen to TalkSport...EVER! Grin

Shakey1500 · 25/06/2012 11:05

But somebody can be "broken" metophorically without violence, monster again doesn't automatically suggest violence, big...could be a rugby prop Grin

Pedantic I know, just saying Grin

I actually though it was master not monster. Shows you how much notice I take of lyrics :)

SingingSands · 25/06/2012 11:06

Haha! I know CharltonHairstyle - don't tell anyone Grin

fishandlilacs · 25/06/2012 11:07

The problem with this song is that it's really bloody catchy, stooshe are actually pretty talented if you put aside the manufactured girl group rubbish. They can sing.

I hadn't interpreted it in the way you mentioned but I do how it can be seen that way. I thought it was more about falling in love with a bad boy-when you're young it's easy to find that kind of man attractive.

DesperatelySeekingPomBears · 25/06/2012 11:07

It could be worse. My little brother is obsessed with a song by Eminem ft RIhanna which includes the line "I laid hands on her, I'll never stoop so low again, I guess I don't know my own strength" followed by "If she ever tries to fuckin' leave again, Im'a tie her to the bed and set the house on fire"...

And let's not forget the chorus, as song by RIhanna, a VICTIM OF DOMESTIC ABUSE HERSELF "Just gunna stand there and watch me burn, but it's alright because I like the way it hurts".

This song worries me more because, as well as teaching young girls 'he only hits you because he loves you' it teaches young boys 'it's okay to beat the ever loving fuck out of a girl as long as you tell her you love her afterwards'.

NoComet · 25/06/2012 11:11

"Daddy I've fallen for a monster
He got a black heart"

This is a cry for help plain and simple, she's looking for a way out.

She's recognised his faults and wants the one person who can make her see sense to help her.

She's positive to her Mum, doesn't want her upset, but she tells the truth to Dad. Because any woman lucky enough to have a reasonable relationship with their Dad knows in the end he'll always be there for you.

Sorry, but I take looking at your relationship, realising it cannot work and looking for help is a positive message. Although a bit beyond 8y olds.
