When we are still 30 mins from home and she's whingey?

I wouldn't like it much if I was a passenger next to you, but I certainly wouldn't leave a child sitting in a poo nappy which will be stinky anyway and very unpleasant for the child. (I'm hoping that you would have something to bag it up in??)

It's unfortunate that there is nowhere to go on a bus to do these things, so I think your best bet would be to move to a quiet spot and try and do it as quick as possible.

For just a wee nappy I'd try and leave it. But if your DC is genuinely uncomfortable then better change it quick and have a calm, quiet baby on the bus ride IMO.

Floggingmolly · 24/06/2012 21:54

You will not get nappy rash "so bad it bleeds" within 1-2 hours of peeing in a nappy Hmm

5madthings · 24/06/2012 21:56

yanbu, your dd was upset and it was a just a wet nappy, i have laid the pushchair flat and changed mine in the pushchair when necessary. i wouldnt like to change a pooey nappy ona bus BUT if it was a long journey and my child pooed then yes i would change them rather than let them sit in it! i would apologise but then once tied up in a nappy sack it would smell less than it did when on my baby and i wouldnt want to leave it and risk them getting sore.

we only changed nappies at night when soaking wet or pooey but if they were sore i would change them more often at night and i tended to put a fresh one on them when i went to bed at say 11pm adn then it only has to go through to 6-7am. one of my boys had to have his nappy changed up till he was about 10mths or so in the night as if i didnt he would be soaking wet through, nappy, vest, pjs and grobag!

have changed nappies on the train etc as well, as long as people are not eating near by i will change a wet nappy anywhere (if there is no change facility) on my lap, on a mat on the floor or by lying the pushchair flat. pooey nappies again if no change facility i will take my baby away from people and do it wherever if i have to, but on a bus for over an hour then yes i would change the nappy rather than have a miserable baby.

some babies dont mind sitting in wet/dirty nappies others do, mine have all bee different in that regard.

BlackOutTheSun · 24/06/2012 21:56

Well thank you for that, I shall go and tell dd that Hmm

5madthings · 24/06/2012 21:56

floggingmolly some babies with sensitive skin or who already have a bit of nappy rash may do actually.

bignutbrownhair · 24/06/2012 22:00

For those of you who change nappies in the night, do you wake your baby to do this? I have a DS who happens to be a great sleeper (smug!), and sometimes when I go into to him in the morning he has done a poo. I have no idea at what point in the night this occured, but I cant exactly go into his room at regular intervals during the night, have a sniff can I and then wake him can I?

DS has occasionally had nappy rash, usually due to teething, but a bit of sudocreme does the trick!

tinkerbel72 · 24/06/2012 22:01

Presumably your baby sometimes lies in a wet nappy for 30 mins at night? I wouldn't classify this as an emergency. I think you did the right thing by not changing the baby on the bus, but I would have changed her before the walk home later. I also think it could be tricky doing the actual change on the bus; it would be difficult to remain seated while changing the baby in her pram and having to shift about, or balance the baby on your knee on a bus which might brake or swerve is not ideal

BlackOutTheSun · 24/06/2012 22:03

I don't change dd's nappy as for some reason she doesn't wee at night

CouthyMow · 24/06/2012 22:04

I will change my DS3's pooey nappy on the bus if he poos on the bus, but he has incredibly weak skin, and incredibly acidic poo as he lives off fruit veg and sod all else, and if a poo is not changed in under 5 minutes, his bum which could have been free of nappy rash previously, will actually be so bad it will be bleeding.

DS2 was the same, yet DD and DS1 could easily have waited till they got home.

Some DC's have rhino hide bottoms, others have tissue paper bottoms. Those with the rhino bum DC can wait to change them, those with the tissue paper bum DC have no option, in fact it would be neglectful to LEAVE them in that dirty nappy.

I think a bit of a smell (which you would smell anyway even if the nappy wasn't changed) is a lot less of a problem than a child's bottom BLEEDING.

OP, YANBU, I would have changed the baby. You know your own DC, and on a journey that long, it might be unavoidable.

CouthyMow · 24/06/2012 22:08

Oh, and even at 16mo, I have to change him at night. More than once. He has a clean nappy at 9pm, another at midnight, and another at 3am. He then has his morning nappy done at 6am.

And these are Pampers, not Tesco Value. He is even worse in Huggies. Not all DC can wear a wet nappy for hours.

bogeyface · 24/06/2012 22:08

Oh, ok Flogging I'll tell DD then, so it doesnt happen again.

FFS!

CouthyMow · 24/06/2012 22:11

Floggingmolly - some DC DO, and I'm not being PFB or anything, after my first 2 DC I would have agreed with you, but my third had issues, and my fourth I am trying to potty train at just 16mo due to the speed he gets nappy rash. Just because YOUR DC didn't get nappy rash that bad, that quick, it doesn't mean NO DC can get nappy rash that bad, that quick!

bogeyface · 24/06/2012 22:12

I can sympathise with DD as i get "nappy rash" due to piles and it is awful. I have to wash after I go to the loo, and if the nay sayers actually had to sit in their own poo for an hour and then deal with the itching and pain it would cause for days afterwards, I am sure they would think differently.

harverina · 24/06/2012 22:12

Personally I wouldnt care if you had changed a wet nappy on a bus that I was on. If there were only 6 people on the bus, it would have been fairly easy to find a seat where there were no people immediatly next to you?

A dirty nappy would probably make my want to boak!

However, my DD has in the past suffered from horrific thrush which can be brought on from not changing a poo nappy quickly - 5 minutes is all that it took to bring my DD's bottom out in a nasty, spotty bottom which bled and gave her a lot of pain. Probably if I was in a situation like yours (although I know it was only a wet nappy for you) and it was a poo I'd get off the bus - unless we had a huge wait for the next but. Where I live it is usually an hour between buses! If my DD's bottom broke out with just pee, I wouldnt hesitate to change it.

Its not the same as an adult wiping their bum on the bus!

harverina · 24/06/2012 22:13

X post a bit with Couthy!

BlackOutTheSun · 24/06/2012 22:16

For those of you with dc's that suffer from nappy rash, have you tried egg whites? Its better then the creams from the dr's. She still gets nappy rash but it doesn't get to the point of bleeding.

CouthyMow, I;ve been thinking about potty training dd (15 months) because of the nappy rash

dangerousliaison · 24/06/2012 22:23

bignutbrownhair my dd would wake when wet or soiled and yes i would check and change her if needed.

bogeyface · 24/06/2012 22:27

I use cloth liners soaked in camomile tea with honey in it. But you have to be sure they dont have thrush as it feeds it.

5madthings · 24/06/2012 22:31

i got skilled at night time nappy changes and could do it without waking ds2 up! depends on the baby tho, some wake more easily than others.

my mum is a nurse and she always recomended egg whites, and i always give mine bare bum time everyday from birth, just lay them on a towel etc, mine have always loved nothing more than being bare bum :)

sashh · 25/06/2012 06:39

Am I the only one thinking 'how'?

And the divil in me wants to say

You are only BU if you do it in a wheelchair space while a weelchair user is not allowed to board.

bogeyface · 25/06/2012 10:16

Well I do all nappy changes on my knee, so I would do it like that on the bus too.

5madthings · 25/06/2012 10:31

yep on my knee or lie the pushchair flat and do it in there, not using up the wheelchair space if there is one waiting to use it tho!

tittytittyhanghang · 25/06/2012 10:36

YANBU and i cant believe there are people out there who think that a momentary offence to their nostrils is more important than a crying baby at risk from painful nappy rash. Is this the 'sense of entitlement' I keep hearing about on mn Grin Even if it was poo, if anything like my dc, can be smelt a mile away and therefore much better to change it quickly and contain it in a fragranced nappy bag rather than letting it waft merrily through company!

Maamekin · 25/06/2012 10:44

I wouldn't change a nappy on a bus. I would probably wait, or if it couldn't wait, I would get off the bus.

Same on a train, would get off if there were no suitable toilets.

However I wouldn't mind if someone else changed a wet nappy on a bus/train (would be nice if they asked other passengers first).

I would draw the line at a pooey nappy though, I think you should get off the bus for that, it's not acceptable to change it around other passengers.

bogeyface · 25/06/2012 11:06

What if there is only one bus an hour Maam? Or you were on the last train?
