To expect cyclists not to ride on the pavement and not expect pedestrians to move out of their way!

I am so sick of having to swerve the pushchair or move out of the way so that some idiot on a bicycle can avoid the traffic by cycling on the pavement and expect me to stand aside with my kids/pushchair/shopping so that they can ride past. Sometimes (when I am not with my kids) I stand firm and don't move out of their way so they have to get off or be patient and wait until I have walked past.

When I was quite heavily pregnant I was walking along and this guy on a bike came zooming up and shouted "move" and just pushed past me. Nob.

Grrr. Hate them!

Hear,hear!

Thistledew · 22/06/2012 19:54

Hear hear, too!

(and I'm a cyclist BTW)

Although the trouble is you get nobs on all forms of transportation, like the bus driver who deliberately drove past me with 3 inches to spare because I was out of the cycle lane avoiding broken glass. He admitted it he had done it deliberately, too.

bowls2010 · 22/06/2012 19:54

Agreed. Shouldn't be on the pavements at all.

echt · 22/06/2012 19:55

In a minute you'll get those cyclist who 1. Reckon they can steer out of the way of pedestrians 2. Bizarrely maintain that because the roads aren't safe for them, they are justified in inflicting themselves on pedestrians.

Cyclist should get in the road. Yes, I cycle, no I've never ever ridden on the pavement.

Mogyzogwon · 22/06/2012 20:12

I fucking hate cyclists for the OP'S reason and many others, e.g.

Holding me up

Jumping red lights

Cycling the wrong way down one way streets

Riding along side each other on busy roads

Blah blah etc etc......too many to mention !

I do so wish the police would do something about them.

Eventually one time when I'm walking on the pavement and one of these fuckers rides up to me expecting me to get out of the way, I'm going to push the twat off their bike. Angry Angry :o

Thistledew · 22/06/2012 20:58

Aww Mog. You sound so angry and pent up. It can't be good for you. I'm afraid there is only one cure to turn you into a happy Mog - take up cycling! Grin

Booette · 22/06/2012 21:05

YANBU. I once got told to "move your fucking kids" by a cyclist on the pavement. I didn't, and I told him where to go! And there was a big grass verge he could have riden his precious bike on if he didn't want to go on the road. But no, I should move 3 kids and pushchair out of the way!

I quite often get pedestrian rage with cyclists and cars driving up the pavement! And I do refuse to move now, unless it's small kids and parents.

CremeEggThief · 22/06/2012 21:09

Last week, a cyclist came speeding along a narrow pavement I happened to be on while waiting to cross at a pedestrian crossing. I eyeballed him and refused to move at all until he stopped and asked me in a polite way.
I admit freely it was one of the few bright spots in a very bad week.:)

annieee · 22/06/2012 21:11

I must be strange then, I've always wondered who thought cars and bicycles mixed better than bicycles and pedestrians! I hate bikes in the road, andthink its beyond dangerous for cyclists. Maybe I would think differently if I met rude bikers, but I never have!

LucieMay · 22/06/2012 21:12

I don't mind kiddies up to the age of about 12 or riding on the pavement of our road, if they're not going fast, as it's a very busy narrow main road. Older than that however and they should be on the road. And it's not just teenagers I spot doing it, plenty of grown adults who should know better!

Pan · 22/06/2012 21:14

Pedestrians. Arncha sick of them! Stepping out in front of you off the pavement. Walking in the cycle lane. And some of them are MUCH worse when they climb into their cars.
Mog - calm yourself. We don't make a point of holding you up on your precious journey. We sort of have as much a right to be on the roads as you do. It isn't personal. This could be news just in for you. And going through a red light (which I do most days) does nothing to 'get in your way'. It's just pathetic jealousy because you can't.

hth.

bumpsnowjustplump · 22/06/2012 21:15

YANBU my word I hate it. I live on a really busy road and there are always bikes on the pavement.. I also live right next to a school and the two just dont mix. I have almost been knocked over by a cyclist and my car has been scratched. It makes me so mad. if you cant ride on the bloody road then you should walk..... grrrrrr

Inertia · 22/06/2012 21:17

To be fair Pan, neither can you. Not legally anyway. Pedestrians could be crossing on a green man while your light is red so they have right of way.

chocolatetester1 · 22/06/2012 21:17

Some people are just gits, like the nob who cycled on the pavement behind me and toddler today, whooshing by so fast it caused DS to scream. He hadn't seen us and it was only luck he didn't hurt us. If he'd hurt DS, I'd have had him Angry and enjoyed it Grin.

balotelli · 22/06/2012 21:18

I deliberately run down the middle of the pavement when a cyclist comes towards me on my territory.. I make sure I get eye contact and stare at tehm just so they know I AM NOT GETTING OUT OF YOUR WAY!
Works nearly everytime. When it doesnt I just push them into the road under the wheels of a passing bus as we pass......... well maybe not exactly push them but the thought is there....

LittleWaveyLines · 22/06/2012 21:18

I played chicken with a cyclist on the pavement the other day - I lost Grin

I did shout "get off the pavement" from the gutter at him though.... Grin

LittleWaveyLines · 22/06/2012 21:19

YANBU

Pan · 22/06/2012 21:19

oh I know, inertia. But it costs no-one anything, and lets face it we are the most vulnerable road users, so complaints about pavement-riding is a bit meh.

alana39 · 22/06/2012 21:20

Agreed cyclists shouldn't be on the pavement. Can pedestrians agree to stop Jay walking when there's only a cyclist coming though. Needs to work both waysSmile

yellowraincoat · 22/06/2012 21:20

We should have better cycle lanes ala Germany and the Netherlands. By God, they know how to do a cycle lane in that part of the world.

YANBU OP, I cycle and I always get off my bike if I need to get on the pavement (which is often in London, where cycle lanes just stop in the middle of the road for no reason).

bitofcheese · 22/06/2012 21:21

pan - you don't pay road tax so you DON'T have as much on the road, contribute to flattening the bumps do you? you seem really proud about going through red lights, on a death wish are you? you give cyclists a bad name, text book nob head

Pan · 22/06/2012 21:24

bit - you don't pay road tax either, if you are a driver. And less of the name-calling please?

NellyBluth · 22/06/2012 21:26

DP is a police officer. One of his favourite hobbies while not at work is stopping cyclists on the path to politely remind them not to cycle on said path, generally in the hope that they tell him to go fuck himself or ask him what it's got to do with him, so he can calmly whip out his warrant card... Grin.

The problem is that I tend to get arsey with cyclists even when I'm on my own!

But YAVVVDNBU (bar little kids, obviously). I've recently moved out of London to a normal sized town and I'm shocked how many people - and adults, not just teenagers - cycle on the pavements.

DesperatelySeekingPomBears · 22/06/2012 21:26

pan is going to make a lovely squishy noise under the wheels of a large truck one day, merrily skipping red lights...

Here lies the body of George O'Day
He died maintaining his right of way
He was right, dead right as he rode along
But he is just as dead as if he were wrong

bitofcheese · 22/06/2012 21:27

i pay tax every year for my car, you don't. every morning when i take my dd to school when we cross the ped' crossing even though the lights are red we have to be really careful because there is a local twat who SPEEDS over this red light regardless of any kids/people that may be crossing, he has nearly got a fair few of us over the months, sooner or later he is going to kill either himself or someone else, so cyclists going over a red light is a very sensitive subjtect with me at the moment, makes me see red immediately, especially when a culprit is bragging about it. i am certainly not envious of your ability to be selfish and dangerous in doing so thanks
