To expect cyclists not to ride on the pavement and not expect pedestrians to move out of their way!

I am so sick of having to swerve the pushchair or move out of the way so that some idiot on a bicycle can avoid the traffic by cycling on the pavement and expect me to stand aside with my kids/pushchair/shopping so that they can ride past. Sometimes (when I am not with my kids) I stand firm and don't move out of their way so they have to get off or be patient and wait until I have walked past.

When I was quite heavily pregnant I was walking along and this guy on a bike came zooming up and shouted "move" and just pushed past me. Nob.

Grrr. Hate them!

Cycling is illegal on public footpaths. Which is where I was. Even the post that you linked to indicated that public footpaths were different case from paths - and that's from a cyclist. The site I linked to isn't specially for walkers or cyclists - its just got the legalities.

The fact that cycling is illegal on public footpaths is completely clear on the site I linked to.

Its very clear when you're on a public footpath because they have special public footpath signs. Bridleways are clearly different - and, yes, cyclists can go on those.

So instead of telling me " shame on you, someone falls of their bike and you rabbit on about nonsense - not a good example to your ds how to behave when someone has an accident, shout at them about legalities. footpaths you can cycle on pavements you can't" you need to get your facts straight and realise that you're breaking the law when you cycle down a public footpath, just as the woman was that knocked into me and fell off her bike was. It was not my fault that she was cycling illegally down the footpath, and therefore it was innappropriate for her to blame me for it and use words that I would prefer my then 6 yo not to hear. It was not nonsense. She clearly was no more hurt than I was (her handlebars had hit me in the first place). Its a bit similar for a car driver to complain that the pedestrian scratched his paintwork when he drove up on the pavement.

I see drivers break the Highway Code at least X 4 daily. You know that little green box that has a bike painted on it in white just before traffic lights? That's NOT for cars/vans. That is for bikes so they safely get a head start. But nooo...most times I look across from my stationary position at the head of a line, and I am looking into a car cabin. Might have to stop in the middle of the lane at the head so that bad drivers get the message.

Pan · 26/06/2012 23:13

I have just learned on twitter that the most common occupation identified by serial killers in the UK since 1908 is......no, not 'cyclist', but.............................'driver'. Wouldncha just know it!Grin

mistlethrush · 26/06/2012 23:16

It suits you Pan!

I agree - this morning I saw a car left turning when the straight ahead arrow went on the lights (there were pedestrians crossing on a green pedestrian light across the turning). I also regularly see cars in the bike box. I see some cyclists jumping the lights - but most of those that look competant or are riding a sit up and beg bike don't.

I also see buses going far too fast at times. And regularly see cars and vans using the bus lane during hours that its buses (and cycles) only.

Most drivers and cyclists are fine - its just a small proportion that give a bad name to the rest.

YANBU. If they want to go along a pavement with a bicycle they should be walking. Selfish of them to want to avoid the traffic - yet they are traffic themselves in the way of pedestrians.

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 27/06/2012 23:32

Pan....How of earth do you cycle in a cape?! I'm impressed! Grin

Pan · 28/06/2012 00:08

See, Lurking, this is why I have to keep jumping all of those red lights that I do, apparently. You know, to keep the cape billowing dramatically as I speed along. Superman never has to deal with red lights! Grin

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 28/06/2012 00:55

You have me laughing now, imaging you as The Phantom of the Opera frantically chasing Christine down on your bike. Grin

mistlethrush · 28/06/2012 09:29

Pan - you'll have to get one of those special wheel guards that stops your skirt cape getting caught in the wheels.

Pan · 28/06/2012 11:35

I think you're mocking me now.

suburbandream · 28/06/2012 11:49

Yesterday I was walking along the main road, it was mid-morning so pretty quiet. This road has a lovely green clearly marked cycle path, but guess what - a cyclist was coming along the pavement towards me. WHY WHY WHY? He was very well decked out in all the cycling gear, flashing cycling glasses etc, I just stopped and looked at him, then at the cycle path and back at him. He looked very embarrassed but didn't take the hint Angry

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 28/06/2012 12:54

Pan I'm sorry :( I wasn't mocking, just having a giggle. Trying to be a more tolerant person and not lump all cyclists together as 'evil and selfish.'

That said..The spandex has gotta go! Grin

mistlethrush · 28/06/2012 13:00

Come off it Pan, I've seen you around long enough to know that you must be able to tolerate such gentle teasing! Anyway, I'd have thought you'd be pleased having so many women imagining you flying along in your tight lycra cladding on your bicycle Grin (not on the pavement of course)(or indeed a public footpath)

Turquoisecat · 28/06/2012 13:04

I believe (and so does the highway code) it's illegal for adults to cycle on the pavement if there is a road.

As such, path cyclists should be pushed off their bikes!!! Grin

Pan · 28/06/2012 13:14

Kidding!
WTF is spandex?? I was at Snow and Rock last week to get some new leggings for running/biking, and found what size they considered to be 'large' is actually v.v. small. Or it could just be me.Blush

can we not joke about pushing people off bikes? Yes pavement cycling isn't to be encoursged at all but neither are acts of violence.

Turquoisecat · 28/06/2012 16:32

Nose picking shouldn't be encouraged. Pavement cycling is illegal.
