there is a big thread on this in Feminism

ziptoes · 22/06/2012 14:32

Rationale for the campaign is here

Well meaning, but could they have been any more patronising?

it's all a bit like that hideous girly lego range, just aimed at teenagers

Shock I can't imagine going over to feminism, but that advert is unbelievable.
Strangely enough it's got 900 odd dislikes:24 likes.

ariadne1 · 22/06/2012 14:41

It looks more like something to lure men into science to me!!

sashh · 23/06/2012 07:21

ripshere We are quite nice, come have a look.

ripsishere · 23/06/2012 07:33

No, you can't fool me. Sorry.

roughtyping · 23/06/2012 07:44

Did you notice the telephone wire too? Aren't us girls just so ditzy.
We love talking on the phone to our pals and wearing makeup and giggling at nothing.

Wow. Phenomenal work, blokes at the EU. Phenomenal.

AnnaFender · 23/06/2012 09:16

I got the 'this video is private' message on youtube too, you can see it [[http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/science-news/9349923/Science-girl-thing-video-branded-offensive.html here] on The Telegraph website.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 23/06/2012 10:15

Even leaving aside the feminist angle, I am a scientist and it's pretty offensive to science too. I would not use it to encourage girls to take science A levels. Although it might provoke some interesting discussions!

EndoplasmicReticulum · 23/06/2012 10:16

And if it was publicity they were after, they've got it.....

KurriKurri · 23/06/2012 10:33

It might help if more was done to eradicate the institionalised sexism present in many scientific institutions. It can be very hard for women to achieve the highest positions within the scientific community.

My DH is a research scientist and part of the equality and diversity team at his place of work. He's spent the last nine months or so working very hard to get his employers to sign up to the Athena Swan Charter for women in science (finally succeeding last week after a fair old battle).

website here if anyone is interested or has DD's interested in career in science.

sashh · 23/06/2012 10:52

if you do pop over to feminism I got the private message but then found a link to a copy - you can see it there.

come on ripsishere, you know you want to

ripsishere · 23/06/2012 11:06

Still scared. I am a kept woman and currently don't work OOTH. I wouldn't be much use in that area - although having said that, I do have solid feminist principals

Guava · 23/06/2012 12:36

YANBU. Welcome back to the 1800s!

The websitos is pretty bad but the video is a bit so what I think. Not as bad as I thought it would be given as the fuss! Clearly they have got their target audience wrong but they are hardly the first to do that.
