The EU has spent actual money on a campaign designed to interest girls in science.

this is the result.

I was expecting there to be a pink test tube. But it was actually a pink petri dish, so it has certainly exceeded my expectations of the level of novel thought that went into the making of this video.

squeaver · 22/06/2012 11:42

Did you like the bit where they put down their sunglasses and picked up the lab goggles? Did you get it? Did you?

OP posts:
SmellsLikeTeenStrop · 22/06/2012 11:43

they have a facebook page

www.facebook.com/sciencegirlthing

headfairy · 22/06/2012 11:45

Of course, girls are only interested in science so they can make more make up and nail varnish. Didn't you know that?

Elenio · 22/06/2012 11:46

Holy crap. Who the hell is this intended for? Who is their audience?

squeaver · 22/06/2012 11:48

I'm going to put this in chat too, for a bit more traffic.

OP posts:
headfairy · 22/06/2012 12:01

I've posted on their wall.

WidowWadman · 22/06/2012 12:01

salpetric acid and way too long artificial nails don't mix well. Unless horrible fumes and a bubbly look is what you aim for. I know that from experience Blush/

Abysmal video, worse than I expected from looking at the facebook page which actually looked quite positive.

CaramelTree · 22/06/2012 12:03

The FB page is much better than the video.

winnybella · 22/06/2012 12:05
Shock

WTAF???

MrsTittleMouse · 22/06/2012 12:10

Glad to see how they've tackled the fundamental issue for women in science - how to cope with a career structure that demands extremely long hours (writing grants, supervising students, admin, writing papers, and finally - actually doing science) and no career breaks at exactly the point when women who want children need to get pregnant.

Oh wait, no, they haven't at all. What a surprise. Hmm

lilypainter · 22/06/2012 12:13

Horrible, horrible, horrible.

I wonder if this would actually appeal more to boys given the overly sexualised video?

FrothyDragon · 22/06/2012 12:16

I got four seconds in and decided hitting my head against a brick wall was preferable... Brb. Watching the rest....

exexpat · 22/06/2012 12:17

Oops, I think I crossposted with squeaver in starting a thread on this.

I cannot believe they spent money on this pile of sexist, patronising crap. And it's part of a big EU campaign being launched by the female European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, who said: "I launched the video teaser for the campaign. It makes studying science look so cool that I wish I could turn the clock back a few years and choose science subjects to study!" Did she actually watch it?

Great minds, exexpat (unlike the buffoons responsible for this!)

sherbetpips · 22/06/2012 12:20

yay our little girls can go and learn how to make more pink stuff! YAY!

Annunziata · 22/06/2012 12:21

Oh for god's sake. DD1 is studying engineering (4 girls out of nearly 400!) and she also agrees!

Hyperballad · 22/06/2012 12:21

that is totally horrendous. Angry

FrothyDragon · 22/06/2012 12:22

Every feminist cell in my body now hurts...

When I took up triple science in high school, it wasn't to find out the chemical compound of my blusher. In fact, I don't think anyone in the group gave a shit about the fact our lipsticks become a bright red after reacting with NH2 compounds (that's a subscript 2, btw). I was more interested in the fact hydrogen was flammable, thus a leak may have been behind the Hindenburg disaster. Or, you know, nicknaming our physics teacher Mrs Lead because her initials were PB...

SardineQueen · 22/06/2012 12:24

I can't think of the words to express how I feel about this.

SardineQueen · 22/06/2012 12:25

I mean who the fuck wears 6 inch heels in a lab all day?

I mean

Just

Arrrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

mamalovebird · 22/06/2012 12:27

Dreadful. Not only is it a shit promo video, the message is appalling.

I hope the creative that came up with that concept has been shot.

Boyonce · 22/06/2012 12:27

I had to stop watching after 15 seconds.

Just awful.

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 22/06/2012 12:27

This could only be more tragic if there was a nude blonde in heels and a 'sexy labcoat.'
