...to face rape/sexual assault allegations?

OP posts:
sashh · 21/06/2012 03:00

I just don't understand the claim that he is more likely to get extradited to the US from Sweden than here. I would have thought Assange was at least as likely to face a US extradition request from here.

No the UK does not extradite to US states thet have the death penalty - well that is the policy, I'm not sure it is always kept to.

And if you read about the treatment of Bradley Manning - well it was inhuman at best.

47to31in7days · 21/06/2012 04:07

He is not charged with first degree murder so why would the death penalty matter? It's not on the table.

saffronwblue · 21/06/2012 04:12

YANBU.
Poor old Ecuador getting dragged into it.
I think the US has the death penalty for treason.

Whatmeworry · 21/06/2012 07:16

I find it interesting that we seem to have no problem in getting shot of people like Assange yet seem to struggle with radical clerics. Oh wait, Assange is a threat to the Government whereas Hamza is a threat to the people.

EverybodysSleepyEyed · 21/06/2012 07:27

Surely he can't be tried for treason if he is not a us citizen.
And Ecuador have a load of trade agreements I renegotiate with the us soon so I'm not sure he picked a good place

EldritchCleavage · 21/06/2012 10:51

Yes but sashh, no ECHR signatory (which Sweden also is) will extradite anyone to a country with capital punishment unless it receives a binding assurance that person will not be subjected to such punishment even if found guilty. The UK has extradited people charged with capital offences to the US before I think, but those people could not receive teh death penalty even if found guilty.

I also think it has been conceded Assange cannot face a treason charge as he is not a US citizen, only an espionage charge.

For an interesting commentary on JA's 'political asylum' claim:

izzyizin · 21/06/2012 11:33

Coming to London to watch the spectacle of Seb's ego trip the Limp-pricks? Didn't have the foresight or the readies to pre-book 5*+ accomodation?

Why not check into claim political asylum in one of the numerous luxuriously appointed and imposing buildings which are conveniently situated to take advantage of shows, shopping, and all that the UK's capital can offer the discerning visitor?

When I pop round to Harrods' sale next week I'll pick up a jar of Vegemite and drop it off to Mr A who's no doubt missing his home comforts after such a very long time away from Oz.

Mopswerver · 21/06/2012 11:37

Apparently Jimmy Carr is looking into refuge in the Ecuadorian Embassy too Grin

EldritchCleavage · 21/06/2012 11:40

Vegemite? He's living it up on roasted guinea pig!

albertswearengen · 21/06/2012 11:46

One of his fancy supporters is probably trying to dig him a tunnel out of the embassy via one of their fancy Knightsbridge townhouses. (Sorry probably the help is trying to dig the tunnel with a spoon). He will then be spirited away dressed as a woman to one of their private islands where he will be kept as an exotic pet until he realises that he should've just gone to Sweden after all.

I think I've too little to do this morning.

JuliaScurr · 21/06/2012 11:52

It's all true, then! He is a member of a persecuted group - heterosexual men
He has a well founded fear - Sweden is a feminist man-hating hell
He has a political belief - that he should be allowed to shag anyone, anyway, anyhow
And he's a bit special

izzyizin · 21/06/2012 11:52

And no doubt partaking of other goodies from South America that arrive in the diplomatic bag, Eldritch.

izzyizin · 21/06/2012 11:54

Grin @Mopswerver

EldritchCleavage · 21/06/2012 12:10

No he hasn't been charged, they want him to answer his case which he is refusing to do.

Since when have victims of rape have to act in a certain way? Hmm

What I do care about that he was more then happy to leak imformation without care of what damage it could course. But he wasn't happy when imformation about him being release?

And it also shows that he has no respect for the law as he has now broken his bail conditions

BlackOutTheSun · 22/06/2012 12:37

*cause

BlackOutTheSun · 22/06/2012 13:03

So why won't he go back and answer question then?

EldritchCleavage · 22/06/2012 13:11

I refuse to take Julian Assange or his New Messiah persecution complex seriously. He has lost his extradition case, on its merits. He is not above the law, so he now needs to go to Sweden and defend himself against his accusers there. He is no more likely to be extradited to the US from there than here, so nothing need prevent him going to clear hs name. And the rape-myth peddling smears against his accusers is disgraceful.

bobbledunk · 22/06/2012 13:17

He fears being extradited to the US. He couldn't be extradited from Britain because he could face the death penalty on certain charges relating to the leaks. Sweden has a history of handing everyone over, even participating in renditions of asylum seekers, where they were sent to an Egyptian prison where the Americans tortured them. Later to be proven innocent.

EdithWeston · 22/06/2012 13:21

The sexual offence in question is not an offence in UK.

Do we ever actually extradite for acts which are not offences here? (Bit of a risky precedent for some other countries/laws). Or are we bound by some EU treaty on this?

If he's not been charged, why don't the Swedes just question him here?
