to think that Men should have to show their marital status at all times

Just going through the Birthday Honours list.
www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consum_dg/groups/dg_digitalassets/@dg/@en/documents/digitalasset/dg_202133.pdf
Every single woman is marked out as "Miss", "Ms" or "Mrs"
and yet none of the men are.
Sex discrimination of the most base order IMHO.
Why do women's achievements seem to depend on their marital status and yet men's do not?

Confused

They'd all have mr wouldn't they?

choccyp1g · 16/06/2012 15:05

Yes, we could have Mmr. for "Married Mister" and Mr. for Unmarried Mr.

ripsishere · 16/06/2012 15:06

I'm not sure that that is the way I would look at it.
Men don't have the variety of 'titles' that women do.
I don't understand womens' achievements depending on their marital stauts TBH. I suppose if a woman wanted to go and clear a river in Dorset she'd need someone to look after her children (if she had any) but apart from that, I'm lost.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 16/06/2012 15:08

They have used all titles except Mr. So, women have a title whether it is Professor or Mrs. Whereas men only have one shown if it is anything other than Mr. It is sexist, Mr should be shown too, but I don't see it as implying that women's inclusion depends on their marital status. The women who are listed as Miss or Mrs could choose to use Ms but haven't.

TalkinPeace2 · 16/06/2012 15:09

but WHY do all the men's names have no title at all but all of the women do?

OP posts:
LibrariansMakeNovelLovers · 16/06/2012 15:09

Maybe rather than men having to show marital status they coudl just have firstnamelastname and no titles for anyone?

WhiteWidow · 16/06/2012 15:10

I don't think they should have to at all. Women don't have to.

NovackNGood · 16/06/2012 15:11

They are using the titles that the woman choose to use when they replied that they accepted the award.

Krumbum · 16/06/2012 15:11

I dont think men should have to show their marital status through titles but I also think women should not either. Your marital status is irrelevant. So all women should go by Ms and all men go by Mr.

TalkinPeace2 · 16/06/2012 15:11

"Judith, Mrs KEMP"
"Tim Kemp"
"Miss Lynda KAPPES"

YUP there should be no titles for anyone other than earned ones.

WHO thought it was OK in 2012 to do it the way they have?

OP posts:
TalkinPeace2 · 16/06/2012 15:12

Novack
I bet they are not - and did NONE of the men want to be called "Mr"
I flatly refuse to use a title as I LOATHE Ms

OP posts:
AliceHurled · 16/06/2012 15:13

Yanbu. Cos men are just normal default whereas women and anyone with any other title aren't. There is no way they are just using the name people gave when they replied, it's consistent.

WhiteWidow · 16/06/2012 15:16

To be honest I think using miss and mrs in this case was out of politeness.

MarysBeard · 16/06/2012 15:16

Make all women and girls Mrs. It would be better not to know anyone's married status.

GrahamTribe · 16/06/2012 15:18

Wdo you put on internet forms where it's impossible to submit it until a title has been provided, Talk?

Mrs because I am married. BUT as I use my maiden name for work I deliberately avoid titles.

OP posts:
AliceHurled · 16/06/2012 15:21

Why is it impolite to not use a woman's title yet ok to not use a man's title?

StepOutOfSpring · 16/06/2012 15:24

YANBU. There should be equivalent titles used (or none).

So either

Ms for a woman, Mr for a man

or

Ms/Miss/Mrs for a woman, (?)/Master/Mr for a man.

AThingInYourLife · 16/06/2012 15:26

That is kind of shit.

Women on the list have their relationship to a man made explicit.

Men get to be individuals in their own right.

ComposHat · 16/06/2012 15:27

YABU

Ms. Does not denote whether a woman is married or not. My soon-ish to be wife iuses Ms Jane Doe as her title and will continue to refer to herself as Ms Jane Doe after we are married.

TalkinPeace2 · 16/06/2012 15:31

Compos
If she gets a gong, her wishes will be irrelevant.
They show the marital status of senior (female) tax inspectors after all on that list, but not the men.

YANBU

ComposHat · 16/06/2012 16:05

talkin

There are women on the list who use Ms. A title that doesn't indicate if they are married or not. Ms. Helen Edwards for example, you can't tell if she is married or not as Ms. is a title used by married and unmarried women.
