AIBU to think that women should not have to be discreet when breastfeeding?

I'm not saying that anyone should purposely flop both boobs out into someones dinner. But it makes me really mad that some people think women should have to be discreet when feeding their baby, sit in a corner or breastfeeding 'booth'.

I also think a breast is just not comparable to a penis to a vagina and if people are offended because they see breasts as purely sexual then that is their own problem.

Noone would object to me sitting in public drinking my coffee or feeding my baby a bottle of cows milk yet people find breastmilk offensive.

I'm not bitty mad I lasted 2 weeks breastfeeding but it still makes my blood boil that it is seen as controversial by many.

Its not about it being hard not to look, it's the having to avert my eyes. It's the uncomfortable having to find something less awkward to look at...

mangomadness · 16/06/2012 13:57

I'm not trying to argue with you (too ill atm) but that's the thing; I don't find it awkward, I find it beautiful and natural. I don't stand and stare, but honestly I don't bat an eyelid about mothers bf in public. I'm not saying that either of us is right or wrong as everybody is entitled to their opinion. I just find it incredibly sad that something so innocent, natural and amazing is frowned upon as if it's something to be ashamed of.

WhiteWidow · 16/06/2012 14:01

I think my opinion might be because of the thing that I saw, I mentioned earlier in the thread. It was far from beautiful, the word that comes to mind is foul. She was a horrible woman. I don't like calling names but Jesus Christ all mighty that was wrong.

sc2987 · 16/06/2012 14:04

Well the solution to that is to stop mixing up your disgust towards fat people with any particular thing you might happen to see fat people do (in this case breastfeeding).

yellowraincoat · 16/06/2012 14:05

I suppose I just don't get it. Honestly, I didn't use to be 100% comfortable with seeing someone breastfeed, I didn't grow up with younger brothers/sisters and my parents are very prudish. So the first few times I saw it, I was a little embarrassed. Fine with it now.

But it was MY problem. I just don't see why you need to look away, not look away, find something else to look at. It's really not that difficult to just not stare, same way you don't stare at anyone.

I at least wish people would accept it's their problem, not the mother's.

WhiteWidow · 16/06/2012 14:10

I don't have a disgust towards fat people thank you very much, she was fat but that's not why she was vile.

It's sounds awful, but if it were possible, she looked like her milk would be sour :(

I just think people should cover up, same goes for men all sweaty with their tops off in summer

NowThenWreck · 16/06/2012 14:30

I think the whole sexy/not sexy argument is beside the point.
I don't get grossed out by women exposing too much of themselves while breast feeding because I think men might get off on it (I highly doubt this).
I just don't like it because I don't want to see a strangers massive distorted purple nipples.
I used to be a waitress in a cafe where some women would have a whole tit flopped out when I was taking her order.
It made me queasy, in the same way women bending over vigorously towelling their undercarriages in a communal changing room makes me queasy.
This is not the same as me thinking bf-ing in public is wrong, or nudity is shameful.
I simply don't wish to have an eyeful of your intimate parts, ta.

StealthPolarBear · 16/06/2012 15:38

And sure they feel the same but sontime its inevitable. Both parties in th case just need to remember o be adults

Krumbum · 16/06/2012 15:43

Why do body parts make you feel queasy? You actually feel nauseated? Sounds like you might have something wrong with you if your stomach reacts like that to seeing a boob! Maybe see a doctor.

tiktok · 16/06/2012 16:02

My comments that were deleted were fairly mild - not sure why they would have contravened guidelines, but hey-ho :)

So.....some people are grossed out by seeing whole breasts and nipples - not because of a sex thing but because of, I dunno, aesthetics? 'Cos some women's nipples are large and purple and distorted? And largeness and purpleness and distortedness (How can nipples be distorted???) look sufficiently unlike someone's personal idea of acceptability to create nausea? That's an unfortunate affliction, to be so strict about physiological 'standards' that a departure from them produces real physical symptoms.

This must be a rare condition, and one we can hardly expect mothers of babies who need feeding to adjust their behaviour to, surely.

It's a bit like asking people whose facial features, or size, or disability, or skin condition, or whatever else falls short of some people's physiological standards, to adjust their behaviour, just in case someone serving them in a shop or cafe feels nauseous seeing them.

Some people dislike the sight of a whole breast, or a nipple, or any of the breast or nipple.....this is their problem and their issue to deal with, perhaps by the very small inconvenience of looking elsewhere. It is nothing the mother should be expected to adapt to.

StealthPolarBear · 16/06/2012 16:19

Interesting that you basically just repeated what is said! I suppose some people are very sensitive though, to criticism and breasts

yellowraincoat · 16/06/2012 16:52

I wonder if people feel equally queasy when they see Page 3/Nuts/Zoo?

Genuine question.

WhiteWidow · 16/06/2012 17:16

No.

Page 3 girls are meant to look good. No big white wobbly bits and burger nips. (sorry mums, massive generalisation)

And you can skip the page, which is easier than the embarrasing averting of eyes and concentrate on the lovely floor pattern or whatever.

yellowraincoat · 16/06/2012 17:17

Right. So everything neatly packaged and clean and tidy is attractive.

I despair, I really do.

WhiteWidow · 16/06/2012 17:21

Yes isn't that the point Hmm

But that doesn't mean I'd want to see that page 3 model breast feeding next to me.

There's a big difference, I don't know why it's being brought up.

yellowraincoat · 16/06/2012 17:24

I find it depressing that you just accept that that's what attractive looks like to be honest. It's a pretty sanitised idea of attractiveness.

You're the one who brought up the unnattractiveness of breasts.

Krumbum · 16/06/2012 17:26

So you like to see what you deem as sexually attractive breasts but not just any breasts. Do you like to only see breast that make you sexually aroused?

yellowraincoat · 16/06/2012 17:28

No she doesn't like to see any breast breastfeeding. But she doesn't mind seeing young and perky breasts displayed for titillation (see what I did there?) although even that seems to cause her some embarrassment.

WhiteWidow · 16/06/2012 17:32

I never brought page 3 up.

Krumbum, haven't I just said I wouldn't like to see the page 3 model breastfeeding?

You're the ones who keep trying to separate boobs from being just sexual, yet you're saying this now. Hmm

I don't want to see ANY boobs except my own in real life

WhiteWidow · 16/06/2012 17:33

I don't want to see someone waggling their willy at me, but I don't mind seeing it in porn :)

Krumbum · 16/06/2012 17:34

So you like a saucy glimpse at some porn tits but breast feeding well thats just immoral! You realise this is ridiculous don't you. Are you ashamed of your own body? This strange attitude must come from somewhere.

yellowraincoat · 16/06/2012 17:34

OK. Then when you see a woman breastfeeding, don't look and then you won't see any boobs.

It's like I don't like seeing squashed pigeons in the street, so I don't look. Everyone's happy. Except the pigeon.

Krumbum · 16/06/2012 17:35

But WHY don't you want to see boobs other than yours, actually what is offensive about them?

yellowraincoat · 16/06/2012 17:35

What? So now you're saying you like porn, but you don't like tits.

Fucking hell.

This is so seriously fucked up.

McKayz · 16/06/2012 17:37

Yellow, I have given up trying to work out any of this. It doesn't make any sense at all.
