Do you have, or know anyone that does, principles that would absolutely not be ditched in the event of greater wealth?

i asked for clarification as people sometimes use 'right-wing'' as a catch all for 'stuff i don't like'

hackmum · 14/06/2012 10:48

Hully: "I am a champagne socialist."

In a way, everyone who calls themselves a socialist and lives in a developed country is kind of a champagne socialist, even if they don't drink actual champagne. What I mean is that all of us are far far better off than the majority of people in the world today. Even if you choose NHS rather than private healthcare, or the local comp rather than a private school, you're still going to have better healthcare and education than most people. Unless your'e very unlucky, you're still going to have fridges and washing machines and central heating. It's all relative.

Trills · 14/06/2012 10:51

I would like to drink more actual champagne.

I'm not sure if I am a socialist though.

Hullygully · 14/06/2012 10:51

I love champagne.

I would like everyone to have champagne.

If I had a shit load of money I would buy me some lovely principles. As it is, my principals are don't treat other people like shit, stick up for the picked upon and always pay Sheila her egg money on a Friday.

SpringHeeledJack · 14/06/2012 10:56

I do know a few people, oer the years, who' e ditched lefty principles

one, I think, was absolutely down to lifestyle (job where she thought she could "work fro the inside"- turns out she couldn't)

the others ostly fit the trope of getting ore right wing as you get older

the rest still identifying as socialists while sitting in London houses in catch ents for naice state schools

Hullygully · 14/06/2012 10:58

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 14/06/2012 11:00

I'm a Cava socialist [cheapskate]

AbsofAwesomeness · 14/06/2012 11:00

But if you're holding them and not living them, that would make you hypocritical. Like if you said you're very much against racism, hate it, but refuse to let your child play with a Pakistani child at school because they're not white, that would make you very hypocritical (and a bit of an arse).

SpringHeeledJack · 14/06/2012 11:03

depends where you draw the "not li ing the " line I spose

I'd draw ine at pri ate school/healthcare etc

but a quite happy to li e in a nice house or I will be when the fucker's finished

Hullygully · 14/06/2012 11:04

So if you live like a capitalist you aren't allowed to hold socialist views, abs?

OP posts:
Hullygully · 14/06/2012 11:05

Jenai - yes, cava mainly, excpet when champers is on special offer at Sainsbos.

SpringHeeledJack · 14/06/2012 11:07

...actually spending lot of ti e pondering this right now, and it's not easy

dp's had an inheritance. It's substantial, to us anyway

I said to dp "but we don't agree with inherited wealth, do we?"

he said "yes, but that was before we got so e"

Grin Wink Sad

I feel pretty unco fortable with it, tbh

SpringHeeledJack · 14/06/2012 11:08

and depends what a capitalist lifestyle entails

ExitPursuedByABear · 14/06/2012 11:09
