To think that people have the principles they can afford?

Do you have, or know anyone that does, principles that would absolutely not be ditched in the event of greater wealth?

OP posts:
FrankWippery · 13/06/2012 15:33

Nope. But I know three or four people who absolutely wouldn't.

BumpingFuglies · 13/06/2012 15:34

What sort of thing are you thinking of Hully?

skrullandcrossbones · 13/06/2012 15:35

Not sure about that.

But I do have principles that would be ditched in the event of greater poverty..

Hullygully · 13/06/2012 15:36

That's what I thought Frank, but nowadays I am seeing dark stuff that sets me a-pondering.

Not so much people abandoning principles, but people holding views that they can afford, and me wondering whether they would still hold if shitloads fell into their laps rather than being a truly truly ethical stance.

LadyBeagleEyes · 13/06/2012 15:37

That's an interesting question.
I'd like to think that if I won the lottery, my politics wouldn't change, in fact when I win the Euro millions I have a list of everybody I'd help.
When my sister died 2 years ago I was left some very unexpected money, I took a holiday in the Canaries with my ds and two of his friends, it was just money at the end of the day, but probably utterly foolish as my sister kept reminding me.

Hullygully · 13/06/2012 15:37

Bumping - I mean more people making a virtue out of necessity rather than really holding deep ethical principles.

OP posts:
BumpingFuglies · 13/06/2012 15:39

I think if I had more money I would be able to afford more principles - buying fair trade goods only, locally produced or British food, rather than only what I can afford.

redrubyshoes · 13/06/2012 15:44

It is a bit like pride, you have where you can have it. Christ if my DC's were hungry and I was stony broke there is nothing I wouldn't consider doing to put food on the table but in RL I condemn the sex trade and shoplifters and benefit fraudsters etc etc

Same sort of thing but opposite. Confused

Mrsjay · 13/06/2012 15:44

I reckon if the shit really hit the fan and with peoples all best intentions they would give up some of their principles , can you give examples of the sort of thing you mean Hully

Birdsgottafly · 13/06/2012 15:45

I wouldn't hesitate to break some laws, if my children were in true need, but i think that to many excuses are made and generally not enough personal responsibility is taken, even for small things.

We don't 'need' most of what we think that we do. (I am coming over all Buddhist at the moment, though, to coincide with the Dalai Lama's visit to Manchester).

I like to think that 'intent' and ethics govern my actions, so they change, obviously, depending on circumstances.

I have ethical principles that i will never let go of, these are not governed by law or events, though. People are confused by what ethics, actually are.

FrankWippery · 13/06/2012 15:46

I do know one couple, staunch socialists from staunch, almost extreme, socialist families (both) who have recently inherited a fairly hefty sum of money. They were already well off in the grand scheme of things, and could easily have afforded to send their children to one of the many private preps around here.

Now that one of their children has reached the end of primary and received offers at two not so good secondaries locally, they have decided that they will be sending said child to a local indy.

They have always been rather vocal about my, and other friends', decision to send their children to private schools and tbh it's left a slight bad taste. There are ethics and then there are ethics, but I struggle to accept that ethics change so drastically with a bit extra cash and taking the NIMBY attitude. If that makes sense. Confused

bilateral · 13/06/2012 15:47

I don't have any that I would forget on developing great wealth. I would have fewer if in real poverty though.

I know someone of great wealth who shows no outward signs. You would presume she is an average woolly liberal who can't afford stuff. Also know someone who got millions unexpectedly. It has fucked their family and lives to some extent.

yellowraincoat · 13/06/2012 15:47

As BumpingFuglies says, I'd probably be able to afford more principles - buying stuff direct from farmers, instead of Lidl.

I can't imagine voting anything but Labour/similarly left-winged party.

Like I said on the other thread, I wouldn't send anyone to a private school.

tethersend · 13/06/2012 15:47

If I came into money, I may be forced to adopt some sort of principles instead of inhabiting the moral no man's land I am currently in.

Mrsjay · 13/06/2012 15:47

I have to agree Birdgottafly it is all about personal responsibility imo

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 13/06/2012 15:48

Nope :)

Actually I don't think my beliefs would change much, but my behaviour probably would. I'd want the best for my ds; if that meant paying (school fees, healthcare, whatever) then so be it.

I'd still be opposed, in principle, to private education and private healthcare.

No integrity, me.

igggi · 13/06/2012 15:48

Yes, wouldn't start eating meat or using private schools or eating nestle stuff or wearing fur or voting tory, even when if won euro millions. Would I keep using the bus though? Probably not.

nilbyname · 13/06/2012 15:48

Hmmmm, I think I would go the other way and become even more virtuous than I am at the moment.

I think though, in truth, the one thing that I would look into private education given the state system that Gove is determined to truly fuck up.

wordfactory · 13/06/2012 15:49

Weeeellll...I always assumed I would send my DC to state school.

But that was before I had DC....

yellowraincoat · 13/06/2012 15:52

Yes igggi, I'd probably forgo the bus. Not the train though, I like the train.

Not sure I'd bother taking first class, how is it different except you get a copy of the Times?

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 13/06/2012 15:53

I think if I had loads of dough I'd still:

  • vote lefty
  • get treatment on the NHS
  • use public transport
  • use state schools (disclaimer: don't have kids, so this one is possibly even more speculative than the others)

Of course I'd need loads of dough to properly test these out

Hully, you're doing a fair bit of thinking about this today, no? Just saw your similar thread on private education.

Bonsoir · 13/06/2012 15:53

Gosh, I could afford to ditch masses of principles Hullygully but I don't. What a dim view of humanity you have!

Hullygully · 13/06/2012 15:54

It was a question, Bonsoir, not a view.

OP posts:
Hopandaskip · 13/06/2012 15:55

yes, I would buy all organic and only grassfed meat if I had more money.

Hullygully · 13/06/2012 15:55

Out of interest, what principles do you have that you could afford to ditch?
