Lighthearted thread, I'm not that interested in football.

Just turned on MOTD to see end of RH interview. He was asked a question about Rio Ferdinand and started looking really shifty and sweating when answering. I'm no expert but I think he wasn't given the choice of putting RF in the squad at all (FA decision).

YANBU. It's sad that people still seem to fawn over John Terry when he's such an out-and-out thug.

magicrat · 09/06/2012 22:12

YANBU I am no fan of Rio but basically he's not in the squad because John Terry is a racist and that is outrageous

HellonHeels · 09/06/2012 22:13

YANBU. He looked very shifty. Never occurred to me it was anything other than his decision though. I thought it was a poor one.

difficultpickle · 09/06/2012 22:16

I think the decision was made before he became manager and there is nothing he can do about it. Completely the wrong one though and let's hope JT's day in court proves this.

OP posts:
Fuzzywood · 09/06/2012 22:17

YANBU, I've been muttering about how disingenuous he was being. The reason Rio Ferdinand isn't in the squad is because John Terry is. Simple as that. I do love the way football managers can seemingly convince themselves of any bollocks Hmm

nancy75 · 09/06/2012 22:19

I feel sorry for Roy. I'm sure this decision was made by the fa, he just has to do what he's told. I know we need Terry in the team, but I would rather we lost with our heads held high than win in disgrace

thebody · 09/06/2012 22:20

Mmn south, Innocent till proved guilty actually is John terry at the moment. That's why we are a democracy.

I Agree op ridiculous decision and had same debate with dh and dss( all of whome flew to ukrane this morning)

Couldn't care a stuff about the sensibilities. All of these footballers are overpaid twats of all colours and Such should be able to put all personal stuff behind them and fucking play to the best of their ability.

That's what the rest if us have to do at work

If terry is found guilty hope stiff penalty but in meantime these primadonnas need to remember that for some fans like my men folk, they save up cash and look forward to this all year!!!

And so
do me and dds as we now going shopping tomorrow
And have tv remote tonight and no bloody football.

difficultpickle · 09/06/2012 22:22

Chelsea managed to win the CL without him so I question how essential his presence is, or don't England have any other defenders other than him and RF?

OP posts:
cantspel · 09/06/2012 22:24

Terry hasn't been convicted of anything yet and so would always be first choice if it came to a straight Ferdinand or Terry decision.

vj32 · 09/06/2012 22:24

DH thinks basically Rio isn't in the squad because Terry is, but is getting really annoyed that people don't point out that Rio isn't fit - he couldn't play all the games anyway, so if you had to pick one over the other it would sort of make sense to pick Terry. As you can't drop him without a footballing reason until the court case as he isn't guilty yet! (If he is found guilty I think he shouldn't play pro football again but as there are other players with all kinds of interesting histories so long as they are good enough at football it doesn't seem to matter what they've been convicted of.)

Fuzzywood · 09/06/2012 22:31

Absolutely agree that JT is innocent until/if found guilty. However, him being in the squad is the reason RF wasn't considered. Do you really think anyone could really work/ play footballwithout distractions if your DB was saying they had racially abused him?

BackforGood · 09/06/2012 22:33

The point is, RH has been appointed to manage the team. He has to pick the team that he thinks will work well together to get the best results, not just now in the Euro 12 comp, but in 2 years time in the World Cup. He has to balance the number of "senior" players with the thought of giving 'big competition experience' to younger ones with potential. Rio's not played as much as he might have done this season, his fitness is in doubt, and RH has enough strength in depth in defence to be able to leave him out. I know some elements of the press think the FA should follow what they say should happen, but ultimately, the FA have appointed RH, and it's up to him to pick the best squad he can from all the English Players available.
You could get 100 000 football fans in a row, and they'd never agree on the "best" squad.

Fuzzywood · 09/06/2012 22:34

Just re-arrange that last sentence in your head so it makes some sense Blush. Bed I think Grin

southlundon · 09/06/2012 22:34

vj32 I think Rio is fit at the moment.

And my feelings on Terry being a thug aren't just related to this incident. You don't have to be convicted of being a thug.

GrahamTribe · 09/06/2012 22:36

"Terry hasn't been convicted of anything yet and so would always be first choice if it came to a straight Ferdinand or Terry decision."

Absolutely.

southlundon · 09/06/2012 22:36

BackForGood - you make a good point. Fans are always going to be armchair pundits on team selections etc!

BellaOfTheBalls · 09/06/2012 22:37

RH is a puppet. Fab left because the FA wanted him to be compliant and he (rightly) refused. JT is a racist, unpleasant thug with a very poor idea of fidelity and plays for Chelsea; if he can lie to his wife who else can he lie to?

vj32 · 09/06/2012 22:39

southlundon I have no clue about football. I only repeat what people tell me (that includes people on TV!) but dh said he had a back problem/weakness that meant he couldn't play lots of games close together, like Ledly King but not as bad as that. (That name probably isn't spelt right but cba to google it. sounds like.)

What I really liked tonight was the flicking between football, cricket and athletics. A bit of a preview of what it is going to be like with the Olympics on!

difficultpickle · 09/06/2012 22:41

Rio played the last 12 games for Man U so he must have some level of fitness.

JT's thugness is well known and has nothing to do with the pending court case.

OP posts:
cantspel · 09/06/2012 22:48

Rio's reputation is no better than JT's afterall it was Rio who posted his "roasting" video all over the net 10 years ago. Terry might shagg them but at least he doesn't crow to the whole world about it.

Rio has played only once for england in the last 2 years so hardly a main stay of the squad and is off in Cyprus having a holiday at the moment so not training for if he was needed anyway.

difficultpickle · 09/06/2012 22:56

cantspel that's a good point. Another reason why I'm glad ds doesn't like football - a real lack of good role models.

OP posts:
rhondajean · 09/06/2012 22:59

Anyone else in a high profile job like terry would be on gardening leave til the case went to court, I won't judge his guilt but I do not understand how he can play for his country with this hanging over him.

ThePathanKhansWitch · 09/06/2012 23:01

YANBU. Shiftiness personified.

cantspel · 09/06/2012 23:03

plenty of good role models just avoid the big 4 english clubs

Kaka
Messi
scottie parker

and plenty more

BackforGood · 09/06/2012 23:04

I agree with cantspel - the press aren't interested in the vast majority who get on with their lives, and are just as nice as you or I - that doesn't sell papers like finding the 'bad apples' does.
