to think that people who choose to have more children whilst living in social housing shouldn't expect to be given a bigger place?

I am a member of another pregnancy forum and there is a woman there who has just had her 5th child (by choice). Neither her nor her partner work and she is complaining that the council will not giver them a bigger house (she is in a 3 bed). All the other members are sympathising with her but I don't understand why. Surely if you choose to have a child when you know your home is not big enough, you shouldn't expect the council to give you a bigger one, especially when it is sought after subsidised housing?

I'm at work and my phone and don't have the patience to read 11 pages on a 6 inch screen.

Has anyone asked what should happen if you have a contraceptive failure while on benefits or in council housing? Are we advocating forced abortion now?

Fwiw my sister is on benefits and has just announced she is expecting. She was looming for work, but is not sure she'll bother now. She wasn't entitled to council housing when she moved away. I must remind her she can apply now. She's in private rented atm. We are all happy for her.

It's butter, jam then cream btw. Anything else is wrong.

usualsuspect · 09/06/2012 22:20

Katespade ,if your friend got a council house so easily why don't you apply for one?

AnnieArsehole · 09/06/2012 22:20

Not sure where this bollocks idea of having x amount of children equals a lovely paid for council/social housing comes from? Some middle class tosser day dreamed it up I think.

I've been in need of housing twice in my life and on both counts I was told that I was looking at a 3-4 year wait MINIMUM for social housing.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 09/06/2012 22:21

No. All epilepsy is definately not controlled.
I am really suprised that anyone thinks it is. Genuinely.

KateSpade · 09/06/2012 22:26

She said she had uncontrolled epilepsy, but i though all epilepsy was uncontrolled, and no im not fucking ignorant, i have epilepsy myself, and nearly went blind from having a fit and smashing my head on the corner of a brick. So, i tell you what, who ever it was that said it, ill have a lovely ignorant attitude and you have epilepsy. & The reason i was asking as ive never heard anyone mention it being described as uncontrolled. Now people have said 'Uncontrollable' the lightbulb has switched on, and i understand what it means.

& I have a job, and am not eligible for benefits, so i cant get a council house.

crazynanna · 09/06/2012 22:30

I have worked full time with no benefits at all in the past, I have worked PT with benefits and I have been unemployed. Throughout all these circs...I have been a council tenant

usualsuspect · 09/06/2012 22:32

Do you think all people in social housing are on benefits?

TalHotBlond · 09/06/2012 22:33

Well I for one am very jealous. I would love to be unemployed, pregnant and live in an overcrowded council house. Who wouldn't?! She is truly living the dream.

Damn those people making the wrong choices in life, losing their jobs or not being able to find decent-paying ones, getting accidentally pregnant and disabled and abused and stuff. The fuckers. I want what they have!

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 09/06/2012 22:34

Who called you fucking ignorant.
You dont have to be on benefits to get social housing.

usualsuspect · 09/06/2012 22:35

See, this is what annoys me people who don't have a fucking clue how social housing works

CocoPopsAddict · 09/06/2012 22:35

I think it would be reasonable to not have council / housing association with more than three bedrooms. That means you could comfortably fit in three or four kids and if you wanted more you'd just have to squeeze in.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 09/06/2012 22:35

I got a council flat when I had DD. I was working full time and got no benefits.
Not even WTC and CTC because those things didnt exist then.
Back in the day.

So why dont you apply for a council house. You never know your luck.

crazynanna · 09/06/2012 22:37

Same here Mrs DV. Worked FT back in the day...no Bennys...and always been a council tenant.

LineRunner · 09/06/2012 22:37

But that pre-supposes a nuclear family, Coco.

What about adult children with special needs, grandparents needing care, living with family?

cheesesarnie · 09/06/2012 22:39

when we were in council house dh worked full time.

social housing doesnt =unemployed.

AnyoneForTennis · 09/06/2012 22:40

People can't still believe that being on benefits means you are then entitled to social housing!!!

AnyoneForTennis · 09/06/2012 22:40

Blended families too...

CocoPopsAddict · 09/06/2012 22:42

Yes LineRunner, you're right. Although as a proportion I don't think there are many households needing more than three bedrooms for the reasons you stated. Perhaps that needs to be factored in, i.e. under-18s are counted differently?

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 09/06/2012 22:42

Our tru fax will make no difference.
Council house will always = unemployed and lovin it.

Some council bungalows came up in my DM's village. She told my sister that she wasnt eligible because she had some money in the bank. My sister believed her Hmm
So DM is still living in a rented place that she cannot afford and has spread the myth that little bit further.

olimpia · 09/06/2012 22:45

What's unreasonable is for people to want to live only in a specific village or area and then complaining that they've been waiting for years for a house because the Polish get all the council houses!
It is not unreasonable to provide a larger house for a large family but people should be realistic and not expect perfection IMO

KateSpade · 09/06/2012 22:45

Well, i admit i didn't know you could work + get social housing.

TalHotBlond · 09/06/2012 22:45

I work for a council which sold it's housing stock off to the HAs years ago. The only way anyone gets housed through our council is via the housing register which is pushed to its limits and allocated by need. Unless you are on your arse it's not happening really. The HA lists are fit to burst too but they allocate differently to us.

Graciescotland · 09/06/2012 22:47

Not read the whole thread but YANBU.

AnnieArsehole · 09/06/2012 22:47

Perfection and social housing? Ha ha ha

Triggles · 09/06/2012 22:47

With higher tuition now for university and younger people being allowed much less for housing benefits, won't that mean that more 18-26yo's may be living at home longer?

We live in a council property and went from a 2 bedroom bungalow to a 3 bedroom semi-detached, but that was because we traded properties with an elderly couple that wanted a smaller bungalow. We simply got lucky and found someone who wanted to trade.
