to think there shouldn't have been a Dominos Pizza stall at DD's Junior School Fete?

Fete was yesterday. We had all the normal things, singing, dancing, games, toy stall, treasure hunt, tea and coffees, etc.

Food on offer was a BBQ run by staff members, a homemade cake stall (including a Jubilee cake competition) and a whacking great Dominos Pizza stall selling 4 slices of pizza for £2. £1 of this was giving back to the school.

Considering the school promotes a healthy eating ethos and are quite strict about chocolate/fizzy drinks etc not being sent in in packed lunches, I was very surprised (and quite horrified) that junk food was being promoted and advertised in the school playground.

My friend laughed and said I was being a twat and eating slices of pizza was no different to eating a cake from the cake stall.

I want to email the head and express my disgust.

So AIBU?

I think you ought to volunteer to organise next years fete

whatdyouthink · 01/06/2012 11:19

its not about the pizza itself . they shouldnt be endorsing a fast food company

Imnotaslimjim · 01/06/2012 11:19

YABU and your friend is right - its a one of and no different to having cake!

TequilaMockinBird · 01/06/2012 11:19

YANBU, Dominos is awful, they should have had Pizza Hut

ComposHat · 01/06/2012 11:20

If you don't want your kids to have a slice of Pizza - don't buy them one. It isn't as if the school were force feeding to your kid is it?

Your mate is right too, how is a Pizza worse than a Chocolate cake? The fact it is homemade doesn't mean it is healthier.

SarkyWench · 01/06/2012 11:20

yum.

pizza....

whatdyouthink · 01/06/2012 11:20

...and i say that as a teacher. no way that would ever have been approved in any school i've ever taught at.

whatdyouthink · 01/06/2012 11:21

OP you are right. right . right. ignore everyone else. it's no brainer.

Sarcalogos · 01/06/2012 11:23

I agree it's not about the pizza but about the shameless advertising. There shouldn't be any sort if branded food stall, healthy or not.

MarkStretch · 01/06/2012 11:24

I am more annoyed about the fact it is a fast food company brought into the playground and advertising to the children. Fair enough, walk past it in the street, etc but to bring it into the school seems very wrong to me.

Presumably PTA organised rather than school

booomy · 01/06/2012 11:26

I agree that it's not healthy and big company like that takes away for the atmosphere of a school fair! But at least your were there, they weren't handing it out at lunchtime!

I'd probably grumble about it, but not bother emailing the head!

MarkStretch · 01/06/2012 11:26

Yes PTA organised.

And I have volunteered before, I have helped for a number of years running stalls etc but didn't this year as I had my 3yr old and 5 month old with me.

GladbagsAndYourHandrags · 01/06/2012 11:27

I wouldn't have a problem with it. Its a school fair not every lunchtime. I'd be pleased DC could have something savoury and not just endless cake and sweets tbh.

takingiteasy · 01/06/2012 11:27

They come to ours too and in primary 3 the kids go to the shop to make pizzas. I think its good they are making links and supporting school fundraising efforts. I bet their stall brings in more than the hook a duck. Do tombolas at your school not have booze on them?

SugarBatty · 01/06/2012 11:29

Sounds better than our school fete, a pound for a cup of tea ffs!

I know what you mean though it does seem a bit crap.

duckdodgers · 01/06/2012 11:32

Horrified Grin Grin

Yep pizza is indeed the food of the devil, so go ahead and express your disgust if you want and head will think you area complete loony

StanleyLambchop · 01/06/2012 11:35

When the olympic flame was in our town last week it was accompanied by a huge red double decker bus shamelessly advertising Coca Cola! So much for the Olympics promoting a healthy lifestyle!

However, the PTA probably were looking at a good deal for the school, ie Dominoes paying a large percentage back to the school funds. Unfortunately there is not enough money in schools at the moment so needs must. At our school fayre we sell all sorts of unhealthy crap, the kids love it and we make loads of money for school funds. It is only one day, a special occasion which is supposed to be fun. We also approach lots of companies and shamelessly beg donations of raffle prizes. If Dominoes had donated a voucher for free pizzas, we would have accepted it and raffled it. YABU.

GeraldineAubergine · 01/06/2012 11:38

Its a slippery slope, first its fairy cakes, then dominos pizza, next kebabs, then fags and Pimms, later on gin and vodka stalls and before you know it there will be stalls selling crack and E's. Dominos is a gateway stall, mark my words.

Catsmamma · 01/06/2012 11:39

It's all about the fundraising

I presume you won't be allowing your children to go on any trips funded by this "Dirty Money"

I think YAB utterly unreasonable.

But please do go ahead and complain to the school, and let us proof read your letter. You could add in your menu plans too since you presumably never go anywhere near anything unhealthy! :P

crunchbag · 01/06/2012 11:40

YABU, I would prefer pizza over chocolate cake and 50% going to school fund sounds great.

FartBlossom · 01/06/2012 11:40

We had £2.50 ice creams at ours. Cost a tenner for us all to have an ice-cream. Pizza would have been amazing and 4 slices for £2 would have fed us all not taking into account that it was above 20 degrees so ice cream was needed anyway

Grin at Tequila with the Pizza Hut remark - you are so right there.

Sorry, but YABU

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 01/06/2012 11:41

Would you mind so much if it was Pizza Express? Or Giraffe?

HeadfirstForHalos · 01/06/2012 11:41

What a brilliant idea! Thanks for that one, will pass it onto our schools organisers!

GeraldineAubergine · 01/06/2012 11:42

"please mum, can I have £12.50 for a la reine and dough balls?"
