to think there shouldn't have been a Dominos Pizza stall at DD's Junior School Fete?

Fete was yesterday. We had all the normal things, singing, dancing, games, toy stall, treasure hunt, tea and coffees, etc.

Food on offer was a BBQ run by staff members, a homemade cake stall (including a Jubilee cake competition) and a whacking great Dominos Pizza stall selling 4 slices of pizza for £2. £1 of this was giving back to the school.

Considering the school promotes a healthy eating ethos and are quite strict about chocolate/fizzy drinks etc not being sent in in packed lunches, I was very surprised (and quite horrified) that junk food was being promoted and advertised in the school playground.

My friend laughed and said I was being a twat and eating slices of pizza was no different to eating a cake from the cake stall.

I want to email the head and express my disgust.

So AIBU?

It's not the pizza I am objecting to, it's the fact a fast food company has been brought into the playground, advertising junk food to the children. I understand that they can be subjected to advertising anywhere and at any time but I object to it being brought into the playground, it seems wrong to me. Especially when the school promotes a healthy eating policy. They are totally contradicting themselves.

So effectively they are saying 'eat healthily, avoid fast food and junk food, except when we want to make money, then it's fine'.

Dominos is a gateway stall, mark my words Grin

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 01/06/2012 11:47

Sounds like a brilliant idea to me.

Healthy schools are still allowed treats, it's part of enabling children to make healthy choices about food. They cant do that if they are never exposed to anything unhealthy. I think that promoting healthy lunches every day and then showing that things like dominoes pizza is for special occasions (like one of the biggest school events of the year) is exactly the sort of message they should be sending.

YABVU.

PineCones · 01/06/2012 11:49

Yabu.
It's not that big a deal.

FuQueenelle · 01/06/2012 11:50

I wouldn't object to a stall selling pizza slices, no worse than BBQ or cakes. I wouldn't like the branding though.

GeraldineAubergine · 01/06/2012 11:51

I bet the first slice is free, its always the way.

HeadfirstForHalos · 01/06/2012 11:51

Healthy eating does include the occasional treat like pizza. It's all about the balance. It's not like they've opened up a permanent Dominoes stand in the lunch hall ffs.

HeadfirstForHalos · 01/06/2012 11:52

Maybe Greggs will have a stall next time Grin

FartBlossom · 01/06/2012 11:54

Maybe Greggs will have a stall next time

Maybe they might get a fruit shoot stall set up next to the greggs

rhondajean · 01/06/2012 11:55

Four slices for two pounds? Where was it? Am willing to travel for prices like that!!

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 01/06/2012 11:56

To be fair, Dominos is v.common.

Talk to Carluccio's next year maybe.

Don't see an issue with it at all.

Sirzy · 01/06/2012 12:08

Thinking about it, those who are saying they shouldn't be advertising in a school what the issue? Companies rightly so do work in the community, them doing this is helping raise funds for the school, of course they do it for pr for themselves to but if the school benefits more what's the issue?

When I was at school McDonald's used to provide all the orange juice for sports day and school fayres. Saved the school having to use their funds, just meant we all had cups with mcdonalds on. Still didn't make me want to eat their food!

Beamur · 01/06/2012 12:15

As an occasional treat I can't really see the problem, plus whilst it is advertising, they are being pretty generous with their pricing and contribution back to the school.
Seems a bit odd to single out pizza as bad, but somehow the BBQ and cakes are ok...

AKMD · 01/06/2012 12:22

What an absolute bargain! Why wasn't I invited? Angry

YABU. What a fantastic, original idea. Presumably it raised loads for the school.

MarkStretch · 01/06/2012 12:25

Ergh, we've just had an email from the PTA saying they raised between £800-900 at the fete yesterday. Seems I am being unreasonable and flogging shitty pizza does make them loads of money.

Stupid smelly Dominos.

Hullygully · 01/06/2012 12:31

yum yum Dominos veg supreme with jalapenos

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 01/06/2012 12:33

Hmmmm shitty pizza Grin

Next year set up a stall peddling Gorgonzola topped polenta, and little crostini with tapenade.

Grrrr · 01/06/2012 12:34

It's a fete, treat type food that you don't eat very often is in order here.

YAB a bit U.

Order slices with plenty of vegetables on if you want to feel better about it.

I too am thinking that this idea needs passing onto our PTA. Can I ask how big your school is, we are a one form entry school so possibly not enough target customers to make it pay for Dominos.

RedBlanket · 01/06/2012 12:42

Pizza is no worse than the shit load of sugar on offer at the cake stall.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 01/06/2012 12:44

Or a gazpacho fountain into which kiddlers could dip rice cakes and carrot sticks!

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 01/06/2012 12:46

A stall where they could fish for marinated anchovies (artichokes for the vegetarians)!

Sorry Mark Blush

Mrsjay · 01/06/2012 12:49

Difference between cake and pizza is ? yabu
