to think there shouldn't have been a Dominos Pizza stall at DD's Junior School Fete?

Fete was yesterday. We had all the normal things, singing, dancing, games, toy stall, treasure hunt, tea and coffees, etc.

Food on offer was a BBQ run by staff members, a homemade cake stall (including a Jubilee cake competition) and a whacking great Dominos Pizza stall selling 4 slices of pizza for £2. £1 of this was giving back to the school.

Considering the school promotes a healthy eating ethos and are quite strict about chocolate/fizzy drinks etc not being sent in in packed lunches, I was very surprised (and quite horrified) that junk food was being promoted and advertised in the school playground.

My friend laughed and said I was being a twat and eating slices of pizza was no different to eating a cake from the cake stall.

I want to email the head and express my disgust.

So AIBU?

'They're not, no. But the brand awareness will have gone in, and have you never heard of pester power?'

My DCs would have dominos or Mcd's every night if they had the choice. But they don't because I dont let them. Just because they ask for it doesn't mean you have to say yes.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 01/06/2012 13:44

I think knowitallstrikesagain has just made my point beautifully...

Sirzy · 01/06/2012 13:46

Pester power is easy to counter with the word NO.

Stall or no stall children are still likely to pester, if a stall being there causes so many problems then children obviously need to learn that "I wants don't get"

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 01/06/2012 13:47

I wouldnt want to go to a fete some people on here organise.

Flipping heck.

knowitallstrikesagain · 01/06/2012 13:48

ItsAllGoingToBeFine But I am an adult.

Does not mean I would let children have it.

I will let children have almost anything in moderation, so as a treat, would have no objection to them having a slice of pizza, no more so than having a slice of pizza made by the school and sold on a stand, or a burger from the BBQ.

This does not mean I will let DC eat what they want when they want. As adults, we can make our own unhealthy choices. But it needs to be adults who guide children but not by example obviously

knowitallstrikesagain · 01/06/2012 13:50

And if they made £800-£900 from the stall, think how much they would have had to charge people on entry/for a BBQ burger/to play the games if they had not had this stall.

It is like the adverts on MN, if you don't like advertising, offer to pay out of your own pocket. No? Well then.

If you are afraid that advertising will make you spend all your money and get fat and unhealthy, you should stay in the house.

AKMD · 01/06/2012 13:51

I actually prefer Pizza Hut but I didn't say no to a free slice of Domino's this lunchtime. Not out of my department's budget either! :o

LaurieFairyCake · 01/06/2012 13:54

Pizza is not junk food.

It's bread, tomato and cheese. Just like a sandwich.

If it was McDonalds or Kfc then you would have a reason to complain but pizza can be a very healthy food.

Scholes34 · 01/06/2012 13:54

Does pizza come under the heading of "junk food"?

Unfortunately, the option of having someone like Domino's come in and sell something for you makes life so much easier for the PTA, as volunteers are always thin on the ground.

KatieMiddleton · 01/06/2012 13:59

YAtotallyNBU OP. It's a slippery slope. First pizza and before you know it they're hooked on crack and stealing from the elderly to fund their habit.

GeraldineAubergine · 01/06/2012 14:14

Next year you should try and get Krispy Kreme involved too. Much better than the crappy home made cake stall. That would be perfect pizza and donuts.

Hullygully · 01/06/2012 14:26

And Pimms

KatieMiddleton · 01/06/2012 14:29

We always have Pimms at any event I'm involved in. It's not summer without it and I can complete a temporary events notice in about 5 minutes so we can sell it for £££

SarkyWench · 01/06/2012 14:31

I though that Pimms was compulsory Shock

Why else would people bother to go Confused

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 01/06/2012 15:01

A vodka luge in the shape of a naked Michael Gove goes down well at any school event, ime.

Hullygully · 01/06/2012 15:02

Oh that's so old hat. We had that last year. Now it's all about a beheaded royal spouting Sea Breezes from the neck.

mumeeee · 01/06/2012 15:19

YABU It was omly Pizza and at a school fete so a one off. Schools have always bought in outside companies to sell things at fetes well they have round here, It is helping raise money for the school and a slice of Pizza is no worse and probably better than cake.

KatieMiddleton · 01/06/2012 15:19

School near me had a rock concert... with Rick Astley.

I think that knocks Domino Pizza, Pimms, Sea Breezes and naked Michael Goves into a cocked hat.

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 01/06/2012 15:29

That's both shocking AND disgusting those poor poor children are now going to be bound to a lifetime of buying Rick Astley albums, using Pester Power!

whiterthanwhite · 01/06/2012 15:42

How awful. My children wouldnt have been too happy, they detest Domino pizza's. I would have to complain as they prefer Pizza Hut!

knowitallstrikesagain · 01/06/2012 17:46

Pimms at a school event? They will all be alcoholics!

charitygirl · 01/06/2012 17:51

Ugh - naff and horrible to have a Fast Food company at a school fete. I would protest on the grounds that it entirely against the spirit of such a thing.

NarkedPuffin · 01/06/2012 18:05

[rolls eyes]

Why do you think a fast food business would sell their product at a loss at a children's school event? It's advertising/promotion. Shouldn't be allowed on school grounds.

NarkedPuffin · 01/06/2012 18:07

It is like the adverts on MN, if you don't like advertising, offer to pay out of your own pocket. No? Well then

No, it's not. It's allowing a fast food company to advertise directly to children in their school.

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 01/06/2012 18:09

[rolls eyes thrice]
