AIBU to disagree with PTA buying defibrillator for primary school?

That's it really.

I'm on the governing body at local primary school and the PTA have decided they are going to purchase a defibrillator for the first aid kit.

This is really down to one member of the PTA having suffered a terrible loss due to congenital heart defect which was undiagnosed in a child. NOT a child at this school I hasten to add.

Now, as a governing body, we have a wish list of what we would ideally like the PTA to help purchase, and at the moment we are prioritising interactive whiteboards, a new reading scheme and some new phonics materials - resources that will be used EVERY day by the pupils.

The PTA are insistent in buying the defibrillator ASAP, and I am equally insistent that we neither want/need it for the following reasons:

  1. The likelihood of it EVER being used is hopefully very very slim
  1. There is an ambulance station with trained medics less than 5 mins away at normal driving pace. On blues and twos an ambulance would/could be present inside of two mins.
  1. There has been no consultation with staff, yet 5 of them would be expected to be happy to be trained to administer the defibrillator if it
was required.
  1. There has been no consultation with parents to ascertain if they would be happy for their DCs to be defibrillated at school by a non-professional medic (I certainly wouldn't be)

Before I would be in the slightest happy about this, I want a demo from the company providing the equipment on how easy it is to use, bearing in mind it is a paediatric defibrillator.

I want to know who will make the decision that the defibrillator is required - ie who is going to diagnose the child with a failing heart?

What happens if/when it goes wrong? Will the administrator of the defibrillator be held responsible?

So am I being unreasonable?? Really appreciate your thoughts here as I need to feed back to governors at next meeting.

I said 3 years ago that this thread was full of people piling in without RTFT, it hasn't changed. Hmm

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 22/11/2015 14:49

Don't you find it's getting worse though. Used to be the odd thread. Now it seems to be every long thread.

I realise people had complained previously about irrelevant comments but I was commenting specifically on the intersection between not rtft and zombie threads.

SauvignonBlanche · 22/11/2015 14:51

I agree, it does seem to be getting worse.

jellybeans · 22/11/2015 14:53

Yabu. They can be life saving and are only used as a last resort.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 22/11/2015 14:59

Aaaaand another one.

THIS is why I've started at least 2 site stuff threads over the years asking if the OP's posts can be automatically highlighted, rather than posters having the option to do it, so that they can be easily found and read to update posters who cba to rtft in its entirety.

I don't understand why they won't do this!

And Lynette - I hope it wasn't sad reasons that changed your mind?

thebestfurchinchilla · 22/11/2015 15:02

My dd's secondary school have one. They raised the funds by asking for a £1 donation from each family. Maybe you could reach a compromise. i.e The PTA contribute half and the rest to be raised in consultation with parents for donations. Then at least you could try to purchase the other much needed things. As others have said, they are idiot proof and they tell you if a shock is needed so are quite safe.

thebestfurchinchilla · 22/11/2015 15:05

What is rift? I don't read the date. This thread came up on 'last 15 mins'

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 22/11/2015 15:05

PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD AND ALL SMALL ANIMALS RTFT!!

C8tontherug · 22/11/2015 15:05

I think it is a good idea to have one

Lots of places have defib eg outside my local co op, train stations, airports, also where I work & first responder local crews carry one

Traffic is always increasing, so regular ambulance crews sometimes take longer than normal to arrive or can be diverted to accidents further afield
eg local first responders in my area do not provide cover on motorways

I believe training is free by eg St Johns Ambulance or other first aid suppliers

You cannot put a price on saving a life whether it is a; child, teacher, parent, visitor to the school

SauvignonBlanche · 22/11/2015 15:05

Yes, it's bonkers that you have to opt into highlighting the OP's posts, I'd be lost without it.

RTFT, jellybeans you'll understand then why what you have written is incorrect. I can't be arsed to explain why, I did that on this thread 3 years ago.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 22/11/2015 15:06

RTFT = Read THe Fucking Thread.

SauvignonBlanche · 22/11/2015 15:07

RTFT is in the acronyms list at he top of this page, it means 'read the fucking thread - preferably before fucking posting!

1frenchfoodie · 22/11/2015 15:07

workshy is correct - there are ones that will not give a shock if there is a cardiac rhythm so impossible to use in error. If money is therefore the main issue has the PTA thought of a fundraising drive?

thebestfurchinchilla · 22/11/2015 15:08

Why are you so angry? I never read the thread. I reply to the OP.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 22/11/2015 15:09

Oo I don't know - perhaps because it would have shown you that the OP was written 3 1/2 years ago AND that the situation was resolved so actually your comment was completely unnecessary.

Plus it's very fucking rude to ignore every one else - your opinion is not that important.

1frenchfoodie · 22/11/2015 15:11

Oops, hadn't realised age of thread - easy to think a trending thread is recent. I can only aspire to enough time to RTFT at 600+ posts...

SauvignonBlanche · 22/11/2015 15:11

I never read the thread. I reply to the OP
So you miss where the OP changes their mind 3 bloody years ago. I'm not angry just weary of fuckwits.

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 22/11/2015 15:12

Why are you so angry? I never read the thread. I reply to the OP.

Well, that is fine on a 10 post thread. On a long thread it means that probably 90% of your posts are irrelevant. Which does rather beg the question why you bother posting them.

chillycurtains · 22/11/2015 15:13

YABU. How will you feel if someone else's child dies from something unexpected? Perhaps an electric shock or a member of staff has a heart attack? Everyone should been given every opportunity at survival and a defibrillator will do this. 2 minutes with no oxygen being pushed around your body by your heart is a long time. It's a life or death length of time. It will also affect whether severe brain damage happens whilst the person is not circulating oxygen round their body. I hope you change your mind and realise you are in a fortunate situation. There is no point in a great new reading scheme or an interactive white board for a pupil who dies.

thebestfurchinchilla · 22/11/2015 15:13

Well excuse me but this thread came up in 'last 15 mins' so had no reason to check date. threads don't usually last 3 years. Also, I am not a professional mumsnetter so forgive my ignorance. Why are you so bothered anyway? If it irks you so much that others are not as clued up as you, why don't you go out and do something less boring instead?

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 22/11/2015 15:14

I can only aspire to enough time to RTFT at 600+ posts...

I read every single post either. But if you highlight the OP's own posts (I have them a jaunty green) it does tend to highlight when things have massively moved on since the OP. And it tends to tell you enough to realise if you will need to read every post or just skim through.

It ain't rocket science that it 600+ posts shit changes.

thebestfurchinchilla · 22/11/2015 15:15

Some very sad people on this thread. Waiting to correct amateur mums netters. I'll leave you all to it. Enjoy! Hmm

Scaredycat3000 · 22/11/2015 15:15

Grin Grin Grin
This is hilarious. People aren't even reading the last post let alone the thread. In RL do they also just listen to the first line of a conversation, wait 20min they reply and wonder why everybody is just staring at them?

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 22/11/2015 15:16

Why are you so bothered anyway? If it irks you so much that others are not as clued up as you, why don't you go out and do something less boring instead?

Does it honestly not bother you that you will generally be posting something utterly irrelevant.

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 22/11/2015 15:16

Amateur mums netters?

Is there a professional position available? This is an important question. I'd like to put forward my application?
