personally I'd rather give my money away than but a union jack mug/various shite, but maybe thats just me

so is anyone up here buying into all the hype?

i'm based just beside glasgow and i haven't bought any jubilee rubbish. means little to me. but at school dd(7) has been making flags and learning what jubilee means. all of which is nice but i'd rather she actually did some maths or ehglish work.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 31/05/2012 18:18

corlan great quote! :)

2rebecca · 31/05/2012 19:05

No, and I was born in England. I don't think any of my family in England have either mind.
Union flags and Scotland don't really mix, although I don't have any Saltires either.

Parrish · 31/05/2012 19:24

I am not celebrating the Jubilee. Neither is there anything organised in the community. The tat is still stuffing the shelves here in Edinburgh. However I have bought tickets for two games at Hampden during the Olympics! Lots of tickets left though :(

Parrish · 31/05/2012 19:27

And today, I made two trays of tablet! My arm is aching!

Doha · 31/05/2012 20:59

Have enough crap in my house without adding bloody jubilee tat to it.

Just outside Glasgow and the only good thing about the Julibee is l get the day off.
Plans for BBQ muted and rejected in our estate (oooo sounds so posh but better than the scheme)
Scottish and proud ( although English parents)

kittyandthefontanelles · 01/06/2012 05:00

I'm English and I've avoided both too.

Buddhastic · 01/06/2012 06:42

I love the Queen but certainly would not be putting a Union Flag up. It's all too Rangers as someone said earlier.

Latara · 01/06/2012 08:21

I'm born in England, part Scottish; & most of my other English friends have some Scottish, Irish & Welsh ancestry.

We don't hate anyone who is Scottish, Welsh or Irish.
It would be like hating ourselves.
Like it or not, you are part of us (literally in our blood).
Yes, we all know our history isn't great. My Scottish ancestors suffered in the Highland clearances.

Here in England - Churchill set the troops on the dockers who were striking in the early 20th century - including some of my relatives.

But why would i hate & blame the current aristocracy & establishment for what happened over 90 years ago?

I'm part German Jewish - I'm suspicious of elderly Germans obviously but why would i hate younger Germans? - they're not the ones who blitzed British cities & murdered tens of millions of Europeans.
My town was bombed by the IRA but i don't hate Irish Catholics - I only hate the bastards who actually planted the bombs.

The Scottish hating the English is as logical as people hating all Muslims because of 9/11.
Or people hating all Jews because of the behaviour of a few Israelis.

If you all hate the English so much then get independence asap & stop being so racist about the English.
Because that's what you are. Racist.

no I think you misunderstand, we don't all hate the English, we don't actually give much thought to them in the grand scheme of things ;)

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 01/06/2012 08:26

I am actually LOLing at the fact you think we all go around hating the English because of the clearances.

Seems more from MN that the English go around hating us because of free prescriptions tbh.

Latara · 01/06/2012 08:38

Sorry for rant.

Tbh... i bought (cringe) a Hello Kitty doll with Union Jack outfit (any excuse to buy Hello Kitty).
But i will be working the Jubilee. Cleaning up poo etc :(

Glad you don't all hate the English.
I don't think certain English would like my family very much as we're not properly English enough for them - my sister has had to cope with horrible racist abuse, i mean VERY nasty stuff.

So i'm a bit confused about my identity really & envy those of you with a strong cultural identity.

It's just that nationalism of ANY kind (including English) makes me very uncomfortable. Irrational i know, sorry.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 01/06/2012 08:46

aww i love Hello Kitty too :)

Latara · 01/06/2012 08:50

Ps. I don't get the Rangers references? Or the marching? Who marches & why? Maybe time I looked on google.

Plus i'm annoyed cos the stupid EDL / BNP / Football Thug types have made the English flag unusable to most people.
So the union jack is more acceptable in England.

Fanjo - I get free prescriptions anyway but would prefer to not have to.

Actually - can everyone just ignore me. I think i'm going a bit high. It is crap.
The Jubilee is ok but the Olympics is irritating - who the hell designed those stupid logos & weird one-eyed mascots??!! What planet were they on?? Down here the Jubilee stuff is selling but the Olympic stuff is not because it looks so bad & it's too expensive.

Latara · 01/06/2012 08:54

Cath Kidston should have designed the Olympic stuff. (Sorry male half of the population).

truthisoutthere · 01/06/2012 08:57

My inlaws are Scottish and they hate the English. It reminds me of younger siblings vying for attention from their older ones.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 01/06/2012 08:58

maybe they hate them because you make arsey comments like that one Wink

truthisoutthere · 01/06/2012 09:02

Yeah, they're all listening for my opinion, i'm sure.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 01/06/2012 09:03

well if you have a sneering superior attitude towards the Scots as "younger siblings" then it probably comes across tbh.

pictish · 01/06/2012 09:05

I agree with Fanjo. We don't all hate the English, but we have subtle cultural differences, and just get on with our own stuff.
I haven't met anyone yet that gives a hoot about the Jubilee....even though the schools are making a token effort.
I'm not a monarchist and would do away with them, so I'm not interested.

I do think there's more affection for the Royals in England for sure....but not being arsed about something doesn't equal hating it.

truthisoutthere · 01/06/2012 09:05

They felt like that before they met me. But maybe i had super powers of projection. They are all quite snippy to be honest.

truthisoutthere · 01/06/2012 09:06

to each other, not just the English.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 01/06/2012 09:06

well, fine, possibly they are just snippy arseholes! But no need to refer to Scots as "younger siblings" is there?

kickingKcurlyC · 01/06/2012 09:08

I'm English. I don't care about the jubilee at all and I won't be buying any rubbish, nor will I be dressing any member of my family in red white and blue.

I did buy an Irn Bru on Wednesday, at the station. I don't like fizzy drinks in general but it was very hot and I was thirsty.

I'm just amazing, the way I cross cultural boundaries like that. Frankly, I'm very proud of my diversity skills and awareness.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 01/06/2012 09:09

you are practically Scottish now Grin
