any shop displays I've seen (yes you M&S) dont look like they are selling

personally I'd rather give my money away than but a union jack mug/various shite, but maybe thats just me

so is anyone up here buying into all the hype?

If that all it takes to start a fight, i'd hate to see what would happen if i actually tried to insult. My head would be on a spike! It does remind me (and I am not English, though was brought up there.).

My two brothers are like this, younger one always seem to have something to prove and is happy to argue any point immediately. My older brother is rather bemused by it all.

Fanjo - glad you like Hello Kitty. I love Hello Kitty. But i'm 35. With no nieces, & the only good friend with a baby girl hates cats!! (how COULD she?).

So i've pretended the Hello Kitty doll is for my cat. & the pink Easter bunny... & the Tabby cat soft toy i felt sorry for.. oh shit that's sad :(
BTW they have a Hello Kitty doll with a tartan outfit. It was pink. Pink tartan. Only in Hello Kitty land.

Latara: the Rangers/marches thing = Sectarianism.

Rangers=Protestant=Unionist
Celtic=Catholic=Republican

Orange marches=Protestant parades celebrating battle of the Boyne

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 01/06/2012 09:12

that's not a fight though, it was mild pissed offness.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 01/06/2012 09:14

probably because of the repeated crappy attitude towards the Scots on MN and calls for us to "go and get independence and stop living off us" etc.

kickingKcurlyC · 01/06/2012 09:15

I know fanjo! It's obviously my spiritual home.

:)

Latara · 01/06/2012 09:15

Irn Bru - tried it, don't like it at all. Like extra strong Lucozade or Orange Fanta. I like orange juice made from oranges though.

I am sorry Scottish MNers.

ItsAll - Thanks for the link.

Fanjo - I don't actually really want you to be independent. I like being British. & I don't think you live off us? I like the Scottish people i know (except for one person & that's cos she's bitchy which transcends all nationalities etc etc.).

I'm on the West coast and also agree that the Union Jack has negative conotations up here. I won't be buying any of the Jubilee tat and won't be joining in the celebrations either, however I'm grateful for the extra days off work!

And it's not because I'm anti-English or anti-Monarchy, I'm proud to be British and both myself and my husband have a brother serving in the military however I just feel detached from the whole thing way up here!

Latara · 01/06/2012 09:26

Deep Fried Mars Bar. NOOOOO

But I recommend Purbeck Ice Cream & New Forest Ice Cream. & Proper cream teas with Devon clotted cream. & Cornish Pasties. & Dorset Apple Cake. & if you drink alcohol then do have a Ringwood Brewery Ale chased down by some local Cider loike.
Welcome to SW England. Where it's fun to get fat! :)

Latara · 01/06/2012 09:28

Thanks for kilted Hello Kitty.

pictish · 01/06/2012 09:29

There has been an air of fuck-off-then-Scotland-you-ungrateful-brats on MN recently....as though some are offended by the murmers of independence.

I'm not bothered either way tbh....but you can keep the royals and David Cameron all for our ownsome. We don't mind.

pictish · 01/06/2012 09:29

your ownsome...sorry.

fedupofnamechanging · 01/06/2012 09:35

In that case pictish, England are owed compo for the Gordon Brown and Tony Blair years! Wink

WandaDoff · 01/06/2012 09:36

I'm English. I live in Glasgow.

I won't be hanging Union flags or buying much jubilee tat. The Union flag has negative connotations up here due to Glasgow Rangers.

I might buy the fancy biscuit tin I saw upthread.

I will definitely be drinking fake Pimms in the Garden.

I don't understand how it is jubilee weekend anyway. George VI died in Feb 1952, the Queen's actual coronation wasn't until June 1953.
Why are we celebrating it now. It should either have been celebrated in Feb of this year or June of next year. Confused

Latara · 01/06/2012 09:44

pictish - no you can have David Cameron. Go on. Please??

pictish · 01/06/2012 09:47

No thank you. Scotland resolutely did not vote for him.
You have only yourselves to blame. YOU have him!

Latara · 01/06/2012 11:55

No I personally didn't vote for him.
And CAMERON... sounds slightly Scottish :)))))
And David. Hmm Welsh.... or Biblical... he could go somewhere sandy from the Bible. Bahrain is nearer Biblical Places than Britain - & DC does seem to like the oppressive Bahrain royal family for some reason... he can live there!

Puremince · 01/06/2012 12:14

Cameron's great-grandparents came from Aberdeenshire - however, apparently he doesn't talk about them.

MorrisZapp · 01/06/2012 12:25

It's laughable. Do these companies have any clued up marketing peeps?

There's mountains of tat in John Lewis, for jubilee and Olympics. The only people I've seen buying it look to be overseas tourists.

I can't remember the company, but there's a tv ad at the moment that offers some kind of discount 'every time England scores' at something.

Whoever came up with the idea of running that ad up here should be sacked - talk about not knowing your target audience.
