any shop displays I've seen (yes you M&S) dont look like they are selling

personally I'd rather give my money away than but a union jack mug/various shite, but maybe thats just me

so is anyone up here buying into all the hype?

OP posts:
JennyPiccolo · 31/05/2012 15:42

i have no idea how to make it, i know it involves boiling sugar and im a bit scared to investigate further.

rhondajean · 31/05/2012 15:43

Not bought a thing, nor do I know anyone who had, but I am very find of queenie and I cannot wait to see the boats on the Thames.

Sadly union jacks have rangers connotations round here.

Annunziata · 31/05/2012 15:45

I love the Queen but it's the Rangers connotations which put me off.

squoosh · 31/05/2012 15:45

Someone in work often makes tablet and will apologise if it's not a 'good batch'. Other Scottish people will peer at it knowingly and say 'hmm, it is a bit pale. He will then apologise and tell us he'll do better next time. Grin

Am I right in saying it's just butter and sugar?

Puremince · 31/05/2012 15:45

JennyPiccolo, you beat the syrup up with icing sugar to spread on cupcakes, of course!!

Annunziata · 31/05/2012 15:46

Or irn bru syrup to make irn bru ice cream!

catchafallingstar · 31/05/2012 16:00

tablet = whole bag of sugar, milk and butter

You can add some vanilla to it if you want to make it posh.

Is indeed delicious but involves LOADS of constant stirring (my recipe anyway)

catchafallingstar · 31/05/2012 16:01

oops forgot the CONDENSED MILK (vital ingredient!!) Blush

prettybird · 31/05/2012 16:04

It's 2lb caster sugar, 1 can condensed milk, 4 oz butter and some milk (and optional vanilla) and involves lots of boiling, stirring and ten beating - and if you don't do enough boiling or beating then it will end up pilly wally or soft (I had one batch, before I got it sussed, which had to be eaten with a spoon Blush) - and you won't know until you've given it a chance to set.

JennyPiccolo · 31/05/2012 16:08

Pure mince, you're a decadent lady.

BerthaKitt · 31/05/2012 16:08

Mmm tablet. My soft southern (well, Liverpool is south of here) DH cannae handle it.

Thought the M&S flag cakes looked nice but I didn't buy any for fear of people thinking I was jubileeing.

squoosh · 31/05/2012 16:10

Not wanting to be controversial but a Scottish sweet I can't get on board with is Edinburgh Rock. Horrible stuff.

TheSurgeonsMate · 31/05/2012 16:12

I don't mind it. Now a Scottish sweet to obsess over is Moffat Toffee. In fact I have a moment free, I'm going to see if you can buy it online.

JennyPiccolo · 31/05/2012 16:13

Yeah, Edinburgh rock is honkin, probably just for tourists.

TheSurgeonsMate · 31/05/2012 16:15

Good grief, that didn't take long. You can buy a whole jar.

squoosh · 31/05/2012 16:16

Never heard of Moffat Toffe, but should it not be called Moffat Toffat? I'll phone the town with my rebranding idea.

'either rename the toffee Toffat or rename the town Moffee'

BerthaKitt · 31/05/2012 16:16

Ooh Surgeon their whole shop is online!
Uh-oh Grin

TheSurgeonsMate · 31/05/2012 16:18

I think renaming the town is the better idea. The whole charm of Moffat Toffee is that it is called toffee but isn't in fact toffee. Calling it Toffat would nix all that.

TheSurgeonsMate · 31/05/2012 16:19

Bertha It's wild! I had no idea. I just love that stuff, and I used ot be able to get it in the Baxters shop who now say that not only do they not stock it, but they never have Hmm.

BerthaKitt · 31/05/2012 16:19

Then they could br

BerthaKitt · 31/05/2012 16:21

They could bring out a new coffee then too. Maybe toffee flavoured.

I wish I could work out how my phone does that.

TheSurgeonsMate · 31/05/2012 16:22

Looking at the P&P charges, the whole jar idea isn't actually such a bad one. What d'you reckon the best before is on an open jar of boiled sweets?

TheSurgeonsMate · 31/05/2012 16:23

Moffee Coffee - it's called coffee, but it isn't in fact coffee. WOnder what it would be?

BerthaKitt · 31/05/2012 16:25

I'm still nibbling on a bag of Moffee Toffees of unknown vintage I found in the cat treat cupboard. And I'm not dead yet.

BerthaKitt · 31/05/2012 16:26

I don't know but I'm sure I had some in a cafe last week! It was called coffee but bore no relation.
