We have loads of ceilidhs up here, my ds wears the kilt at the school Christmas dance, as all the boys do, and they do it with pride, not embarrassed at all.
I'ts being Scottish, not anti English.
I'm not anti monarchy, I can take them or leave them, they don't have a huge affect on my life, but I quite enjoy the spectacle that only a Royal Wedding or a Jubilee can do better than anywhere else in the world.
If they put those skills into the Olympic Opening Ceremony it will be awesome.
They have to have a Pipe Band though.

DailyMailSpy · 31/05/2012 13:17

Just out of curiosity novack, how many traditions do you regularly take part in?

(this isn't a rhetorical question...btw...)

prettybird · 31/05/2012 13:19

Our ds is off tomorrow, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, which is an Inset Day Shock:)

I suspect that the absenteeism rate will be quite high next Thursday and Friday WinkHmm

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 31/05/2012 13:25

Novack, you sound pretty bigoted for someone who claims to despise it in others, imo.

No I havent bought anything, DD has to dress in Bosnian colours for her school street party, they are dressing each class in colours of different nations and there is a Bosnian girl in her class

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 31/05/2012 13:27

Also..we do pay tax here y'know

jubilucket · 31/05/2012 13:29

Disclaimer... I'm in Wiltshire and have only a Scottish great-grandmother. But one thing I've noticed was that the whole Jubilee phenomenon (and it IS a phenomenon, the whole town is smothered in flags and bunting and there are loads of street parties etc planned) was kickstarted by the Olympic torch procession coming through last week. I wonder how many other areas are feeling this effect?

NovackNGood · 31/05/2012 13:39

fanjo. Bigoted against whom?

Enjoy picking the most PC. of the Bosnian flags for the Jubilee of the Commonwealth Royal family. Really. Flags of non commonwealth countries for HM's jubilee. What was the reasoning behind that?

squoosh · 31/05/2012 13:47

The reasoning is that they are representing the nations of the pupils. One of them is Bosnian. It's called inclusion.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 31/05/2012 13:53

Exactly, 5 kids in DD' s class, 1 is Bosnian.

You are bigoted against Scots, it seems. Did i need to even say that?

NovackNGood · 31/05/2012 13:55

Funny one Fanjo since I was born there and educated there and spend a huge amount of time there and own property there and employ people there.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 31/05/2012 14:00

So? you still find it in you to slag off the Scots and imply we all think in the same way, pretty bigoted in my view.

But nice try at setting me up.

Also, i didn't pick DD's class colours for the Jubilee event, her teacher did. Not that it really matters, I don't think they will understand the concept of beingPC or even flags, being 5 with severe learning difficulties but there ya go, some people will argue about anything.

I do remember being at the Silver Jubilee at DD's age and really enjoyed the atmosphere..was in England though...

NovackNGood · 31/05/2012 14:20

Fanjo no where have I said you are not welcome to your own opinions and are at liberty to do so. QED not bigoted.

Sqoosh| oh the irony of the pc brigade inclusion mantra. Considering this thread shows how many people are offended/bored with the Union flag in Scotland despite that flag including the saltire in its very make up a teacher would have another child dress in the colours of a Bosnian flag without informing the mother of that child who has to turn up in said colours whether the family are Bosniak or supporters of the Republica Sprksa. One will surely offend the other as much as a tricolour to a rangers fan I fear. More inclusive would being the same for one day and then on the national day of that child having a celebration of there cultural heritage too. You would not expect to fly the russian fly all over Scotland on St. Andrews day although he is also their patron saint would you to just be inclusive would you. Or would you?

fanjo if I was you I'd perhaps ask the teacher if the child's more one way or the other as no need to tell scot how damaging sectarianism can be to friendships. Blue and yellow or red and blue are some of the options

RoxyRobin · 31/05/2012 14:20

Thanks, Fanjo, you've made me feel really ancient now!

DS was born in the Silver Jubilee year, and I've still got a boxful of commerative silver crowns (the coins, not the headgear) that everyone gave him. If things get any worse I shall have to spend them - which is what loads of the kids who were given them at school did at the time, as our outraged local rag reported.

Surely each child should receive a diamond in keeping with this tradition?

NovackNGood · 31/05/2012 14:22

fanjo I remember seeing HM on her royal train during the silver jubilee when i was very very young and being in a huge crowd in the streets too and that was in staunch labour controlled Dundee.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 31/05/2012 14:22

Novack. bigoted doesn't mean not allowing others to have an opinion.

And not sure actually what you are trying to ask in last part? Child's more one way or the other what?

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 31/05/2012 14:24

novack - we have been informed a million times what the colours will be as we have to supply stuff and dress the kids in the colours. The girls parents and the staff are very friendly and the staff are very aware where they are from, no offending happening there. :)

takingiteasy · 31/05/2012 14:25

Nope and don't intend to although we will be attending a street party. Which, now that I think about it, is organised by an English neighbour. She's 65 and popped round earlier to confirm what dishes we were doing (shit, I can't remember what I agreed to?!?!) and is quite excited. I'm a bit 'meh' but it's an excuse to get together with the neighours. Apparantly there are only 3 organised for the whole of my county. Ours being one of them.

The only shops on my Hight Street with anything resembling a display are the national chains. The locals haven't got anything up or on their shop fronts. We don't really give a fuck here do we? Suits me!

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 31/05/2012 14:25

plus serbia is a different country now anyway ;)

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 31/05/2012 14:26

anyway i am not getting into a discussion about Bosnia and Serbia on a thread about the jubilee, that is just ridiculous.

catchafallingstar · 31/05/2012 14:27

kids here at school all next week as usual (with Sports days etc ). They will be having a garden party at school on Tuedsay pm (wear red white or blue - no football tops!)

Local council decided on not awarding the day as a holiday as it would cost the economy too much money - good on them!

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 31/05/2012 14:28

by my last comment I meant that I assume if they were actually Serbians living in bosnia they would have said so as am sure they were consulted when choosing the flag,...they would have chosen the Serbian one if it mattered so much.

Anyway can't believe i am discussing this, i care not what colour they wear on Monday except I have to buy a ton of ribbon and things.

squoosh · 31/05/2012 14:30

Yeah, bloody cheek of the p.c. brigade trying to make a small child from a foreign country feel as if she has a part to play in a no doubt unfamilar ritual of a Royal celebration.

And guess what! It looks like the mother of the Bosnian child has been informed. It's a class of five children, what a killjoy you must be demanding that celebrations no matter how small must be celebrated as per your instructions.

fedupofnamechanging · 31/05/2012 14:30

It's clear the problem here is that you are buying your tat in Tesco Wink! Went to Waitrose today and they have biscuit barrels in the shape of a phone box or a bus, really pretty cake tins and some gorgeous mugs. Sadly, I had to spend the money on food, but if the price goes down on Tuesday, I will be stocking up on nice 'tat'.
