any shop displays I've seen (yes you M&S) dont look like they are selling

personally I'd rather give my money away than but a union jack mug/various shite, but maybe thats just me

so is anyone up here buying into all the hype?

Oldgrey, it's not an anti-English thing at all! It's just we're just not that into Royalty. Apparently, that's why the Royal Family like Balmoral so much - the Scots are just more relaxed about the whole thing.

squoosh · 31/05/2012 12:06

Is it not an historical fact that Scotland has always been a bit ambivalent towards the Monarchy?

So what if people don't want to celebrate it. How does that affect your celebrations? Live and let live.

I'm Irish, so the Royal thing goes completely above my head, the Jubilee doesn't really register with me despite all the tv bombardment. I only realised we had an extra long weekend about a month ago. It's easy to disconnect from Royal stuff if it doesn't interest you in any way.

All the people having street parties and so on, I hope they have a great time. Genuinely.

abitcoldupnorth · 31/05/2012 12:06

Not buying the tat, but more because we're on economy drive and not buying anything much.

We're having a party at the local hall, but next weekend as it's half-term this weekend and lots of folk away.

There's red, white & blue bunting up at the local community centre.

AlbertoFrog · 31/05/2012 12:07

We are actually having a party but shhhhh it's not official.

Oh and we've even invited our ever so luvverly English neighbours Grin

squoosh · 31/05/2012 12:09

I like your style Alberto, you are one of the lesser spotted Anarchist-Royalist breed!

prettybird · 31/05/2012 12:09

Not sure it's an England v Scotland thing - it's just that it doesn't seem as relevant to us. We're not going to go into a frenzy about Union Jack flags when the Saltire means more to us and don't get us started about the Saltire being banned from flying at Hampden during the Olympics because we are not a participating "country" [mm]

Maybe if the Queen had chosen to use the correct title: Queen Elizabeth II and I (as in she is the second Queen Elizabeth of England and the first of Scotland - in the same way that James was James I and VI) we might have seen it as having more meaning but somehow I don't think so

prettybird · 31/05/2012 12:11

Good point puremince :)

caerlaverock · 31/05/2012 12:11

Jubilee is for thickos who don't understand that the social hierarchy she represents is the same one grinding them into the dirt.

DoingTheBestICan · 31/05/2012 12:12

I live in North Wales and our village are having a huge party on monday with fireworks & everything.
DS is having a jubilee party in school tomorrow & we are all looking forward to celebrating the event.

DoingTheBestICan · 31/05/2012 12:13

So i'll consider myself a thicko then shall i? Hmm

caerlaverock · 31/05/2012 12:14

If you like

DoingTheBestICan · 31/05/2012 12:15

Thanks very much for that.

What is wrong with just wanting to celebrate the queen reaching 60yrs on the throne?
Why must i be labelled as a thicko to want to do this?

AlbertoFrog · 31/05/2012 12:16

"Anarchist-Royalist"

I like that title and may have to use it. Thanks squoosh

Seriously though, like any other family I like some and dislike others. Anne loves the Scottish Rugby team so she's ok. Charles loves Scotland (and has put a lot of money into Dumfries House) and Phillip is such a buffoon he makes me laugh out loud. As for Liz herself, I admire her for still going strong after all these years (wonder how many Prime Ministers she's wanted to send to the tower?)

Sorry this is a bit of a waffle.

caerlaverock · 31/05/2012 12:18

I watched a bit of that dumfries house program but had to turn it off because Charles was such a spoilt numpty and yes thick. When he is king he will be Charles thicko, king of thickos up and down the land

crikeyitshot · 31/05/2012 12:20

Well at least the Queen has got a good taste in men:

The time Benedict Cumberbatch visited Buckingham Palace

DoingTheBestICan · 31/05/2012 12:21

Wind your neck in,you are making yourself sound like a bloody thicko.

You dont want to celebrate the jubilee, others do,lets just leave it at that eh?

albertswearengen · 31/05/2012 12:23

If you're in Scotland decking your hoose out in Union Jack tat is all a bit Rangers really. You expect it to be accompanied by a rendition of "Hello, hello we are the Billy Boys".
At least there will be plenty of Clearance items next week for the Orangemen - just in time for the 12th July.

DollysDrawers · 31/05/2012 12:24

God some folk will try to turn anything into a Scotland v England bun fight. Someone asked about the Jubilee and a poster brings up independence and prescriptions ffs. Hmm

I'm in England and will be going to a party but certainly won't be buying into the tat in the shops. It's just crap.

RoxyRobin · 31/05/2012 12:24

Not in Scotland, but not far over the border.

I think I will be sick if I see any more jubilee-related stuff. Wouldn't allow any over the threshold.

It's just bread and circuses. I shall hide in the hills on the day. That'll show them.

catchafallingstar · 31/05/2012 12:24

I wish I could 'like' your post prettybird.....

The queen's title annoys me. She is Elizabeth I of Scotland....

However it should also be remembered that she is descended from the Stuarts so maybe we should celebrate....a little?

trixymalixy · 31/05/2012 12:26

No, but only because I bought tat for the royal wedding last year so I'm just reusing it Grin.

Whyriskit · 31/05/2012 12:31

I don't see it as being very relevant to me tbh. There doesn't seem to be very much going on here (midlothian). DS' pre-school have been asked to wear red, white and blue next week and our local country park has some events on but that's about it.
I'm from the west coast so the union flag to me is associated with Rangers which is very sad.
Don't mind queenie and quite happy to accept my bonus day off!

prettybird · 31/05/2012 12:34

I actually admire the work that the "core" Royal family does: as Albertofrog says, Anne supports the Scottish rugby team and I wouldn't have the Queen's job for anything. (I found a comment from one of the former prime minsters interesting: that the half hour a week or however long it is that he/she as with the Queen a week are actually very useful as she has been around so long - and not a word will be leaked so that it is possible to speak candidly )

If/when Scotland votes for independence, I've not yet decided whether I would want us to be a republic or to remain a constitutional monarchy. Quite like the idea of Anne as nominal "Head of State" Grin

WilsonFrickett · 31/05/2012 12:34

I don't see that my opinions or actions should be judged based on what I choose to spend my money on tbh. Yep, we're having a street party, yep I will enjoy it, yep, huge fan of the queen and yep, checking 'what Katie wore' is one of my guilty pleasures.

But I'm not buying bunting because that's about the shops trying to get me spend my money, not about how I feel about the Jubilee.

GentleOtter · 31/05/2012 12:40

There is a tat hiatus between Easter and Halloween and retail must be rubbing their hands at the double whammy which is about to happen (although there is some sort of restriction on using the Olympic ring symbol).

And given that most Scots can create a party over a decent fish supper and can of Irn Bru, tat is mainly superfluous.
