I still don't understand why people like football - I don't need to. Everyone is different - they make up their own minds, thankfully we are free to do so.

perceptionreality · 05/06/2012 22:09

I think we do all need to understand why we would think it was reasonable to worship the Queen.

It's never wise to do things 'just because' - maybe that's why the holocaust happened?

How do we adequately explain this to our children?

Doobydoo · 05/06/2012 22:15

Thank you Perception for explaining why Quick made me laugh.I couldn't be bothered and thought she would know that it sounded bonkers based on media, books, mags etc.
There you go Quick...that was all I meantSmile

exoticfruits · 05/06/2012 22:21

You just say like everything else ' I believe........other people believe.............and you can make up your mind when you are older'. They will make up their minds- we don't have to think the way our parents do. My grandfather was anti the monarchy and he wouldn't stand up for the National Anthem back before WW2, when everyone did. His DS, my father, was very pro the monarchy. They still got on, the world didn't end because he dared think for himself!
I don't understand why people are vegetarian, why they are Jehovah Witnesses, why they need people to take their shoes off in their house, why they like Eastenders etc etc etc - they are at perfect liberty to do it. I don't see the need for the country to think in an exoticfruit's approved way!

QuickLookBusy · 05/06/2012 22:27

Well Dooby I find it bizarre that you would laugh at somone saying there is info in the public Domain about the Queen.

Where do you get your info from about people in history for example? Unless you knew Winston Churchill personally are we not supposed to make judgements based on info in the public domain?

perceptionreality · 05/06/2012 22:28

That's fair enough exotic..........but earlier on you implied that we were all silly for not being able to see the point of the jubilee, given that the celebrations had all been 'hugely successful'.

I've been trying to get to the root of that point of view. That is all.

exoticfruits · 05/06/2012 22:37

I didn't say you were silly, only that it was a bit silly to witter on when it was a huge success. I can't see why we have to understand it. I didn't go to see the Olympic torch - lots did - it is a free country - I can't see why I have to understand why.

perceptionreality · 05/06/2012 22:44

well I don't think I'm going to get an adequate explanation. But some people do question things like this, whether loads of people have been waving flags or not.

People get caught up in hysteria (Diana's funeral).

Flatbread · 05/06/2012 22:44

Interesting perspective exotic on freedom of choice...can a person 'choose' to be a slave? Can we 'choose' to be subjects? If the system is based on freedom of choice, how does one opt out of being a subject of the queen?

MarySA · 05/06/2012 22:48

I wish somebody would tell me in what way the family Windsor are so superior to everyone else in the country that they need to be kept in luxury and bowed and scraped to. Why why why.

exoticfruits · 05/06/2012 22:50

You can choose what you think. I haven't been to anything so it is hardly hysteria, I don't even have a flag. I am pro the monarchy - probably because my grandfather tried to inflict views like Flatbreads.

FayeGovan · 05/06/2012 22:53

hully, totally agree with you

well the posts I could read anyway Hmm

is history not allowed here??

FayeGovan · 05/06/2012 22:55

I have loved the fact all the nutters waving flags at the jubilee got a right royal soaking

total arseholes

QuickLookBusy · 05/06/2012 23:05

Glad you enjoyed watching the " nutters" and "arseholes" Faye. Hmm

TuftyFinch · 05/06/2012 23:14

History has always been deleted Hully.
It's one of those lamentable things.
Altered.
Deleted.
Interpreted.
History is rarely just fact.
There's always a slant.

scottishmummy · 05/06/2012 23:16

you ole biscuit arse faye. great scottish bonhomie there
well dont watch it, i didnt
but couldnt have been nice gettin drookit

BeetrootJuice · 06/06/2012 00:51

So does it matter if wealth is inherited? You can't change history - what's done is done. Someone is always going to be at the top of the pile, just as someone will always be at the bottom. We are not all equal, either in intellect, wealth, looks or ability and it's about time people accepted that fact.
I personally would not cross the street to see Kate Middleton, she doesn't deserve respect, nor has she earned it - but I might think differently in 40 years' time, if I'm still alive.

The Jubilee was fab. She's been a wonderful queen for the last 60 years and long may she reign!

PrincessFiorimonde · 06/06/2012 01:43

Well - many people like the queen because she is an old lady and she's been around for a long time.

However, many people don't like Prince Charles because they think things like:

  1. he was horrid to his first wife
  2. he tries to interfere with political decisions
  3. he has big ears

Which of these things actually matter? In a constitutional sort of way?

Is there anyone here who is a monarchist and who really thinks that Charles III will get a big cheer if he celebrates his silver jubilee in 2040?

If not - why not? Because if you support the monarchy, you also, surely, support the unpopular ones alongside the popular ones.

FayeGovan · 06/06/2012 08:17

ha, mums old and has been around a long time, dont see many flotilla's going along for her

Hullygully · 06/06/2012 08:42

yy perception, fliffy and tifty.

re history, tis indeed subject to slant, bias etc etc, but there remain unalterable facts within all that. It was those wot I posted and that were mysteriously deleted.

chaddychick · 06/06/2012 08:53

I think the whole thing has been fantastic, watching the Queen and her family seeing the support she has from the public, has made me so proud to be English

CrunchyFrog · 06/06/2012 09:13

"proud to be English"

NYAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH

WHY? WHY ought one to be proud of an accident of birth? Oh, I know, Miss, I know! Because it suits the aims of the ruling classes. Patriotism is a super distraction and a great way of making sure that we have a nice big Other to blame for everything (ie, rest of the world.) Wave those flags, proles! Time for the Daily Hate!

MAD.

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 06/06/2012 09:38

So, hypothetically, if we abolished the monarchy in the way that the republicans would like and elected a head of state - what then? What actually improves for the man on the street who doesn't give a fuck about the supposed threat that the Queen has over us all. How does any of that practically change things for us?

I DO get the sentiment behind what you're saying from an intellectual point of view, but I just don't think most people's feelings for the monarchy are based on an intellectual argument. That doesn't make those feelings wrong or inferior to yours.

WinkyWinkola · 06/06/2012 09:42

But if you believe in democracy as a principle, how does that sit with having a monarchy?

It's not necessarily about improving the lot of every day man - although a redistribution of wealth would help a lot - but about the principles of democracy.

Or do we just ignore such facets of something we all hold dear? If so, I don't get why.

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 06/06/2012 09:47

Well, that's kind of the heart of it, isn't it? It's all about principles. If only 30% of the electorate can be bothered to vote, it would seem principles are very low down on the agenda for the common man on the street. That's probably why he's not fussed about the queen, doesn't see her as a threat and is more than happy to have a party celebrating someone who's worked hard for 60 years etc etc.

I must admit, I can't quite see the same sort of response for Charles when he becomes King.....
