to be annoyed about my ebay dress

trinni · 24/05/2012 23:02

it was advertised as a size 12. Muggins here bought it and it's fecking enormous, at least a size 14/16.

I messaged her my concerns and she just said H&M sizes are large and although the label states 38, it is in fact an H&M 12 Confused

She's being obstructive and I think she should have mentioned this in her listing. I have no idea about H&M clothing.

Um.

Shee listed a size 12 H&M dress as a size 12? And you think she's being obstructive?

Confused
lunamoon · 24/05/2012 23:07

I can't say either way who is right or wrong.
What I tend to do if something is a size 12, but in actual fact is very big fitting, is say that in the description.
The last item I sold was a child's dress which said size 8-9 years but fitted my dd when she was around 7-8 so that is what I put in the description.
The buyer was happy with the sale.
I don't think there is much you can do if it says a size 12 on the label, except don't buy from that seller again!

trinni · 24/05/2012 23:10

But it isn't anything like a size 12 - it is reaaly large.

Why wouldn't she mention this in her listing? I always do if I think things ( particularly kids' stuff) might be a bit misleading size wise.

When I messaged her she was quick to mention that a 12 from H&M is more like a 16 and as it was a beach dress it's supposed to be loose - erm, only if I decide it needs to be so!

A euro 38 is actually supposed to translate to a uk 10! She maybe should have said it runs large.

YABU to say 14 is huge though Wink

lilbreeze · 24/05/2012 23:12

A size 38 is a size 12 so it sounds as if it was described accurately.

Was it an auction or buy it now? Refund rules are slightly different for the two.

However Ebay does not offer a trying on service so if it doesn't fit.... Just ebay it!

Naoko · 24/05/2012 23:16

H&M sizes are batshit. That's not your seller's fault. I'm a size 14 pretty much anywhere - in H&M I've been known to buy anything from a 10 to an 18. She advertised a 12, 38 is actually equivalent to a 10 in most of Europe so it's not as advertised, but if it's enormous that's because H&M sizing makes no sense and is measured by blind monkeys with a hangover.

butthatsnotfair · 24/05/2012 23:17

A 38 is a 12 in H&M but a 10 in other shops - I have NO idea why.

I find H&M sizing to be on the small side.

What sort of dress is it? Are you sure it's not meant to be baggy. Sometimes their empire line or maxi type dresses are huge but I think their meant to be (?)

Psychopsilocybin · 24/05/2012 23:17

If the label on the dress says size Euro 38, its a size 12 so there really isn't alot you can do. She advertised it correctly. Maybe you would be better off trying on clothes in shops, we all know a 12 in, say, River Island can be vastly different to Peacocks.

I'm sorry, YABU.

Psychopsilocybin · 24/05/2012 23:19

Oh, I thought 38 is a 12? I'm a bridesmaid soon and my dress is 38 which they said is a 12. Oh I don't know!

trinni · 24/05/2012 23:22

Lilbreeze I don't agree that a standard UK size 12 bust measurement is 38 inches - it's smaller than that.

And sorry Softly, a size 14 isn't huge. Just too big for me Smile

OP posts:
trinni · 24/05/2012 23:24

Well, I will never make another H&M purchase. What a load of nonsense Grin

OP posts:
butthatsnotfair · 24/05/2012 23:25

38 doesn't relate to the bust measurement though.

It's a meaningless number attributed to a size in europe (I think) - just like 12 is a size in the UK. Correct me if I'm wrong like, but I always assumed this was the case....

TheUnMember · 24/05/2012 23:29

H&M are a Swedish company. 38 in Sweden is sort of half way between a 10 and a 12. The measurement proportions are different because they a based on Swedish female shapes, which tend to me straighter.

TheUnMember · 24/05/2012 23:31

*tend to be straighter

MuddyDogs · 24/05/2012 23:40

You could have gone to H&M website and looked at the size charts before purchasing or e-mailed the seller for measurements. YABU!

butthatsnotfair · 24/05/2012 23:41

What do you mean by straighter theunmember?

Do you mean not as curvy?

trinni · 24/05/2012 23:42

The confusion for me is this...

I am a size 12 (usually) and (usually) if I pick a garment off the rail, in a size 12 it will fit, give or take a bit. M&S and Next and I agree are on the generous side but not to the extent things are hanging off in folds!

I don't know what the deal is with H&M but am am actually very happy we don't have a store in my area.

Maybe I am deemed unreasonable but I would have made it very much simpler and less disappointing for potential buyers had I been the seller of this billowing dress!

OP posts:
butthatsnotfair · 24/05/2012 23:49

To be fair trinni I'm a 12 too and usually buy a 38 in H&M. Sometimes I need a 40 (presumably because I'm not very 'straight' Wink)

It does sound like you've been unlucky with this purchase. Could you resell it on ebay?

bogeyface · 24/05/2012 23:55

You are purely for expecting anything you buy off the internet for fitting!

But she didnt misrepresent the item, so rather than getting narky, I think you need to chalk this up to experience and make sure that you note in your description that it comes up big, hence why you are reselling it!

TheUnMember · 24/05/2012 23:57

What do you mean by straighter theunmember?

Do you mean not as curvy?

Yes. Average Swedish woman height is a couple of inches taller than average British woman and they're less curvy. I'm a midget, if I buy trousers here, they go right up to my armpits and they're still too long.

BeadingMarvelous · 25/05/2012 09:36

This is why i don't buy clothes for myself on eBay. The few times i have they have been either too big or too small and the returns policy is never as straightforward as online shopping from a store.

I would recommend reselling it.

Tryharder · 25/05/2012 10:05

I didnt realise that H&M sizes were based on Swedish women. I am tall and not curvy so this would explain why H&M clothes fit me wonderfully!

YABU OP. If you want the option of trying stuff on and returning it, buy from a shop and pay the full price.

You can't get bargains off ebay and then moan because it doesn't fit you. The label said "38" which is as everyone has said, a UK size 12.

Mspontipine · 25/05/2012 10:17

Sizes vary sooo much though don't they? I wouldn't really put the seller at fault. Expecially as it's a beach dress. I am currently sat in what I believe is a loose beach coverall top from Primark(charity shop) size 8 and believe me I am by no means in any shop whatsoever one of those!! Envy More like an 18 or even 20 in tops in some shops.
The only way you really have grounds to complain is if she provided the measurements of the garment and did this incorrectly.

ButternutSquish · 25/05/2012 12:20

Not sure you've got much to complain about really. She said it was a 38/ size 12 from H&M and it's exactly that. You should have asked for specific measurements of the item if you were unsure of the fit.

I however have just bought 2 jackets, a skirt & 2 tops all from Ebay and I'm very happy with them. Mainly because I bought items from a shop that I know what sizes fit me IYSWIM

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 25/05/2012 12:32

I find H & M come up small, well def in trousers!!

Is it one of those floaty maxi dresses - I always order a size smaller when I get them as they do come up large (unless the clingy jersey material) :)
