Seems that Blair is planning a return to UK politics.

William the Conqueror was famed for harrying the North - basically destroying the place in order to quash any thought of rebellion. He was a hard bastard (literally, known as William the Bastard during his lifetime - although possibly not to his face...). Thatcher was his heir, politically, and treated the North in much the same way. And Wales. And Scotland. And wrought untold havoc in the Midlands and West Country too. Basically everywhere outside London and the Home Counties.

jaquelinehyde · 20/05/2012 22:47

Thatcher with no doubt or hesitation!

headfairy · 20/05/2012 22:49

Thatcher, the effects of her regime are still echoing 30 years later, and not in a good way.

As an aside, I've been wanting to link to this graph for aaages here scroll down to page 17, the graphs illustrating income growth in the different socio-economic during he premiership of Thatcher, Major and Blair. It's apropro nothing, but I do think it's quite telling.

edam · 20/05/2012 22:50

yes, very possibly, we'd have an economy much more like Germany's and be far better for it. Far less dependence on spivs gambling with everyone else's money in the City. What arch-Thatcherites never mention is that Germany is a social democracy where companies have employee representatives on the board for instance - if Labour proposed that here, can you imagine the howls of outrage from those busy feathering their own nests in the boardrooms and in the City? Yet it works in Germany, a country whose economy they claim to admire.

OAM2009 · 20/05/2012 22:51

pushmepullyou and thenightsky Sad

Thatcher.

It's not even close.

West Yorkshire girl here too. I remember watching Look North and seeing film of soup kitchens and entire High Streets full of shops that had been shut because no-one in the town or village had any money to buy stuff.

I hate the woman with a vengeance. When she dies, I am planning to go and spit on her body (even if I do get arrested). What she did to the North has not been forgotten. I will never vote Tory as long as I live.

Francagoestohollywood · 20/05/2012 22:53

Who knows wht Labour would have done in the 80s, hopefully it would have avoided to destroy entire communities.

CurrySpice · 20/05/2012 22:56

edam William was called the Bastard because he was illigitimate. Not because he was ruthless. Thatcher won that ephthet all by herself :o

I am a Midlands girl. I live in the south. People look amazed here when I say how I hate her. So do my Dutch inlaws. They really admire her. But they didn't have to live with te consequences of her bloody minded policies

thenightsky · 20/05/2012 22:57

I really believe that today's Torys have no clue how much they are hated in the North due to Thatcher's legacy.

FizzyLaces · 20/05/2012 22:57

Thatcher.

OAM2009 · 20/05/2012 22:59

Just finished reading the entire thread and realise I've been much too tame.

When that evil Thatcher woman dies, I will go and:

  • spit, dance and defecate on her parade / body / grave / memorial / whatever
  • then fly all my flags at full mast and play party music
  • and then have a party!
Grin
CurrySpice · 20/05/2012 23:05

I laughed when I read somewhere (here?) from a rabid anti-Thatcherite, that they would be happy to help pay for a state funeral for her...so long as it could take place in Barnsley :o

thenightsky · 20/05/2012 23:06

CurrySpice Aye... lets do it! Grin

thenightsky · 20/05/2012 23:08

And have a wake in fucking Magna theme park!

ilovesooty · 20/05/2012 23:10

I will mourn John Smith to my dying day

I agree.

perceptionreality · 20/05/2012 23:10

Thatcher, most definitely - although Blair ruined his career with the lies about Iraq and certainly inspired a lot of peoples hatred and contempt.

CurrySpice · 20/05/2012 23:11

I do think there is a strong possibility of civil unrest when she carks it!

headfairy · 20/05/2012 23:12

I think so too curryspice as do the Met police I believe Grin

ThatVikRinA22 · 20/05/2012 23:18

i am a yorkshire girl too. i now work as a bobby in an ex mining community which is long dead with no hope of recovery, just one of many ex pit villages and mining communities which were destroyed never to recover. i would not have been a bobby during the 80's for all the tea in china - and i am hoping that we are not in for another dose of that kind of civil unrest again for a while (ignores the london riots.....)

the 80s was all about greed and lining ones own pockets and thatcher seemed to enslave people to money, the rich got richer, the poor were fucked over.

nothing much has changed then.

JosephineCD · 20/05/2012 23:22

Do you think the unions weren't interested in lining their pockets?

thenightsky · 20/05/2012 23:23

Vicar... the police were used by Thatcher. It was a means of setting neighbour against neighbour. Bad days. Awful days. Sad

thenightsky · 20/05/2012 23:26

JosephineCD No, I don't... not back in those days. It was backs against the wall fight for survival. The unions really told it how it was. Scargill predicted how it would end up, and it did.

ThatVikRinA22 · 20/05/2012 23:27

i know. i was around back then Grin i supported the miners strike. we (as in the police) still get called maggies boot boys now.

saying that, cameron and co have royally fucked the police over now, just waiting with baited breath for the civil unrest and the politicians who will be looking for police protection.

glad im not met police.

alienbump · 20/05/2012 23:35

Thatcher is possibly the only living person I can say I absolutely hate. Hated her from the time she was Education Secretary and can remember singing Thatcher, Thathcher, milk snatcher as we skipped around the playground. If only she'd settled for stealing milk from little kids...

TwoIfBySea · 20/05/2012 23:36

Although being Scottish my answer should be Thatcher I think Blair is far more odious.

Thatcher was an iron fisted bitch, we all knew that, she knew that. We accepted it and growled accordingly.

Blair pretended he was something he was not. The cosying up to Bush should have had every Labour voter screaming and defecting to another party. He really should be facing an inquiry regarding the war and his subsequent profiteering from it not looking to grease himself back into the spotlight. People look the other way because he was in Labour and those within can seemingly do nothing wrong but mark my words, the man was a Tory through and through!

VictoriaWould · 20/05/2012 23:47

Vicar, do you believe that 'civil unrest' is inevitable?
I do...
