dd is staying at m&d's tonight, spent the day there. just called and mum said they took her to see it as (quote) dd told her all her friends had seen it (!) and that we were ok with it. i know she wanted to see it but i wouldn't have taken her to see it as the poster alone i thought made the film not look suitable, she is 9 and the movie is a 12a which apparently means a 12 year old can see it without a guardian but a 9 year old can with a guardian (so i have been told). not happy. mum said there is one scene only with a passionate kiss, this fills me with horror tbh, perhaps i am over reacting but i am very protective with her with regards to anything even remotely sexual. i remember when i was about 10 or 11 m&d made the mistake of taking me to the kings road with older sister for her birthday to see the rocky horror picture show, i was mortified, i knew i was too young, i can remember the night out very clearly, no idea what my parents were thinking of......they won't make that mistake again, she knows i am somewhat upset. have any of you seen it?

Over protective I would say, if it is a 12a then there is not going to be anything remotely explicit in the film. A passionate kiss is not going to affect your daughter whatsoever!

WorraLiberty · 19/05/2012 21:41

The thought of your 9yr old seeing a passionate screen kiss 'fills you with horror'?

Really?

Tee2072 · 19/05/2012 21:41

Haven't seen it but I imagine a 9 year old has seen people kissing in real life.

I think it's more a 12a for violence than sex.

Also, at 9? It's time to stop hiding her from sex. Before she starts experimenting at 10.

Sunscorch · 19/05/2012 21:41

Well, it's nothing like Rocky Horror.

Your reaction to a kiss is ridiculous _

olimpia · 19/05/2012 21:43

I think you and a lot of other people who post on MN should chill out and take ratings with a pinch of salt.

pointythings · 19/05/2012 21:43

You're being PFB and overprotective.

fuckarama · 19/05/2012 21:45

You are being totally and utterly PFB and very very over protective.

It's a passionate kiss.

That is all. Nothing more.

squeakytoy · 19/05/2012 21:46

I also think you need to apologise to your parents if you gave them a tongue lashing for taking her.. it is not as if they sneaked her in to an 18 cert.

I would imagine most of her mates probably have seen it, and you are doing her absolutely no favours at all by trying to shield her from seeing things that are perfectly normal and natural.

yousankmybattleship · 19/05/2012 21:46

Chill out. I teach Year 3 and most of them have seen it. I can assure at 9 they know about kissing!!!

rainbowinthesky · 19/05/2012 21:48

I was going to take dd to it who is 8 but decided against it after having read about some of the scenes. Be interested to follow this thread to see if I change my mind.

rainbowinthesky · 19/05/2012 21:49

The kissing wouldnt bother me. I am sure I read there was more to it than just kissing.

Debeez · 19/05/2012 21:52

I think most film certificates are conservative now and I wouldn't worry about the content. You'd be surprised what 9 year olds know.

I think your DM was unreasonable to take your daughter's word that everyone had seen it and that you had consented without checking with you first. Either you were an angel of a child who never told a lie or she's forgotten how persuasive children can be. Also can understand how you're worried about a Rocky Horror repeat.

I doubt the passionate kiss will have been anything majorly new to her so YAB a bit U there. Better to have these things introduced with someone to explain about feelings and love rather than Mr Depp and co ravishing away on screen though, if you're concerned why not have the tame chat about "special cuddles" or whichever terms you prefer and love and respect? She's gonna start finding out stuff soon and you can't stop that but you can make sure she's informed.

bitofcheese · 19/05/2012 21:53

ok, i accept it would appear i am being over protective and over reacted, that is why i posted as i suspected that i might have but i didn't know. for the record though, it wasn't 'just a kiss', according to my mum she said (her words) that it was a very passionate kiss that had them banging from wall to wall'..that is what set me off, i am not neurotic enough to not like her seeing a bog standard kiss, it was her description of a passionate one. and as for tees comment, i fucking hope she doesn't start experimenting with passionate kisses at ten, kisses, fair enough, but not passionate in the way that my mum described. i know things are bad these days but if it is now acceptable that a ten year old has passionate kissing sessions then times are worse than i thought

My (just) 10 year old went to see it with his brother (14) and 2 friends (14 and 12).

They all loved it and the 10 yr old initially said it was a bit scary, but then later on, decided it wasn't.

Older 2 said there was nothing 'rude' in it.

It is a film that children are legally allowed to see, and there were probably lots of others of the same age in the cinema, so why would the GM think to even question it really.

fuckarama · 19/05/2012 21:55

FGS it's a FILM it's not real life.

Hulababy · 19/05/2012 21:55

I'd far rather DD saw a passionate kiss than many other stuff that is out their for viewing, even in 12a films.

My DD is just turned 10y and has seen all the Harry Potter films, which most are 12a ratings. I am not sure what the film is like your DD has seen but chances are it'll be okay - from your mum's description anyway.

oiwheresthecoffee · 19/05/2012 21:55

Erm, you sound very very over protective and odd. How is a kiss going to be a bad thing ?

fuckityfuckfuckfuck · 19/05/2012 21:56

Isn't Rocky Horror an 18 though? Or definately a 15 at least. And it's one of my 7yo's favourites. Am clearly a dreadful mother.
Film ratings these days mean very little imo. An 18 back in the day seems pretty tame to our eyes now. I couldn't believe Ferris Bueller is a 15 (dd's seen that too...) I understand you being displeased at your parents doing somehting you don't agree with but they thought they were doing something nice for your dd, who by all accounts, suggested you'd be ok with it. I don't actually think they've done anything wrong. And what are you doing wasting a childfree night bemoaning the fact here? Get drinking woman.

rainbowinthesky · 19/05/2012 21:56

From what I've read there is more alluded to than just a kiss. Be interested to hear from someone who has seen it.

PorkyandBess · 19/05/2012 21:57

To add to my post, my ds is going to a 10 year old's birthday party next weekend and they are going to see this film.

bitofcheese · 19/05/2012 21:57

deb - i showed her a while ago one of those vintage ladybird books, it is a fab' book about the body and talks about how babies are made......love the vintage way it describes a males body parts etc. a few hours after she had read the book i casually asked her if there was anything in it she wanted to ask me about, she didn't seem interested and changed the subject, i haven't mentioned it since...

OP posts:
bitofcheese · 19/05/2012 22:01

fuck - nah, i am ok about it now, i wanted to run it by you lot. tbh she is growing up so quickly she seems to have gone from a little girl into a mini teenager over night and i ain't very good at knowing what to do/not do. as for rocky horror, it was a show/musical in the kings road a million years ago. it was full of (kind of) sex scenes etc, i was only 10 or 11, very much a virgin and clueless but i knew i shouldn't have been there and was really embarassed, so were my parents (they didn't know what it was about!!), funny the things you remember

What is a vintage way of saying penis may i ask ?
