dd is staying at m&d's tonight, spent the day there. just called and mum said they took her to see it as (quote) dd told her all her friends had seen it (!) and that we were ok with it. i know she wanted to see it but i wouldn't have taken her to see it as the poster alone i thought made the film not look suitable, she is 9 and the movie is a 12a which apparently means a 12 year old can see it without a guardian but a 9 year old can with a guardian (so i have been told). not happy. mum said there is one scene only with a passionate kiss, this fills me with horror tbh, perhaps i am over reacting but i am very protective with her with regards to anything even remotely sexual. i remember when i was about 10 or 11 m&d made the mistake of taking me to the kings road with older sister for her birthday to see the rocky horror picture show, i was mortified, i knew i was too young, i can remember the night out very clearly, no idea what my parents were thinking of......they won't make that mistake again, she knows i am somewhat upset. have any of you seen it?

The flying sex was done more for humour than the sexual content, the implied BJ would have passed kids by, the violence was quite explicit but as its carried out by a vampire it seems more cartoonish so doesn't seem so shocking. I didn't like the pants on the face and references to the young daughter being a "whore" bothered me. What actually bothered me the most was that it was the worst Depp/Burton film I've seen. Not funny enough to be a comedy not scary enough to a horror film.
As for taking kids under 12, I took my DD 11 (nearly 12) and was just about ok, I wouldn't take younger kids and would second the recommendation to read IMDB for content information.

ripsishere · 20/05/2012 09:10

I took my 11 YO DD and her friend last week.
The film was disappointing. Neither of them squirmed or asked about the sexual flying around coupling.
Both did go ewwwww at the knickers on face.

MardyArsedMidlander · 20/05/2012 09:41

Surely the only 'risk' is that she will grow up expecting her first kiss to be a passionate one from a guy who looks like johnny Depp. Oh the disappointment awaiting her....

Earlybird · 02/06/2012 23:17

Took dd last night, and rather wish i hadn't.

As others have described there are some sexually suggestive scenes that seemed more explicit than necessary. (DD kept asking what was going on when doctor went down for presumed BJ on johnny deep's character).

There is a scene of a group sitting around the campfire smoking a joint (before johnny depp kills them all), there is a suicide scene where someone deliberately goes over a cliff (possessed by spirits) and falls onto rocks below. There are also some scary scenes of a young girl in a mental asylum and receiving shock treatments. There also is a song performed by Alice Cooper wearing a straitjacket. And there is some violence (people who die when the vampire kills them for their blood, sex scene between jd and a witch, a fight scene with point blank gun shots, etc).

It was far more disturbing than entertaining for my dd. And, while it is fine for older viewers, found myself not quite ready to explain to dd what all those things meant. It is not something she needs to know at just 11, and quite honestly, she seemed more disturbed than curious.

Seriously overreacting.

Dont you remember being nine? I'd seen a lot worse than a passionate kiss! They aren't fragile little innocent flowers who's brains will be corrupted for watching a 12a :/

cocolepew · 03/06/2012 08:16

The sex/kissing scene went over my 10 yr old dds head tbh. I was more worried at the beginning because it was a bit scary.

Film was shite overall.

cluelessnchaos · 03/06/2012 08:29

I took dd2 11 last week. It was inappropriate and she came out saying that shouldn't have been classified 12a, 12 at least. The bj scene went over her head. One of the opening lines was talking about the young daughter "she touches herself and makes noises like a kitten " I've seen lOads of 12a films and this was definitely another level. We laughed it off but I'd have been very uncomfortable if she was 9.

cluelessnchaos · 03/06/2012 08:30

Agree film was utter shite

BarredfromhavingStella · 03/06/2012 11:25

Really?- I mean really??? ffs how empty is your life to get your undies in a twist about a passionate kiss Hmm

Threeprinces · 03/06/2012 12:24

I always check pbbfc.co.uk like an earlier poster said. It tells you exactly what is in the film, what violence, sex or language.

I have DSs aged 11 and 8 and wouldn't automatically take them to a 12A without checking first.

OP - I was surprised to see how many people blasted you at the start. Surely you should have the right to say what your child should or shouldn't see, your parents should have checked first.

RabidAnchovy · 03/06/2012 12:51

As far as I know there is a blow job insinuated at and some wild vampire sex one the walls ceiling and just about all over.

Clearly your mother is a little less of a prude Grin

Takver · 03/06/2012 13:20

Well, having seen it - without my 10 y/o - the sex scenes wouldn't worry me unduly, but I would have said that it was really quite violent for a pre-teen.

Having said that I had my eyes shut quite a bit (esp at the start) so I can't verify exactly how violent Grin

Trills · 03/06/2012 13:30

Parents' BBFC will tell you exactly what is in it that could be of any issue, and explain why it was rated 12A rather than PG.

HeadfirstForHalos · 03/06/2012 16:36

I'm taking my 9 year old dd next weekend, we're having a girly afternoon out Grin

Takver · 03/06/2012 21:14

Mind you, Trills, the BBFC description of Men in Black 3 makes it sound entirely harmless (and it is PG) but dd - who is happy to watch all the HP films, Star Wars etc - came back saying that it was horrible, scary & really violent. So it doesn't always quite work.

eurycantha · 03/06/2012 21:33

I have seen this film ,I long ago realised that when children watch a film like this [,that is a 12a which implies but doesnt show] they often look at things in a much different way to an adult.A child of 8 or 9 is not going to realise that when johnny Depp and the witch roll around the walls, ceiling and basically all over the room they are going to/have had sex,I think that children would just think it is funny that they are breaking all the furniture.. while kissing.I wouldnt be bothered by these scenes though I said at the time I was glad hadn`t bought an 8year old who had wanted to come due to a couple of the vampire and burial scenes.
I took a ten year old to see the new Men in black film this week I thought that the scene at the beginning with the alien baddie was really horrible and my young friend thought I was being a twit.

piratecat · 03/06/2012 21:46

i took dd10. i was more worried about the ghost bits tbh.

I was more worried about the scare factor, and to be fair i was probably more 'frightened' than her, same as the sexual scenes i was building more in my head because of sexual awareness than there was to be 'seen' iyswim.

I did think, on the whole it wasn't the best choice to go and see it, as it being a Tim Burton film it was going to be a bit off the wall. Yet we are huge Depp fans and part of the film was filmed near us. ( that was a tough one knowing Mr Depp was so near and yet so far--totally closed roads!)

I think it should have had a 15.

piratecat · 03/06/2012 21:50

yes luckily my daughter thought most of it funny, it's tricky because she has mates who watch doctor who, but she is scared by some of the scenes.

the blow job ref, would have passed her by.
the bit where he climbs up inbetween her legs she said was 'rude'
the sheet on the ghost scared the crap put of me, but she laughed at it.

but then again, she came away from it, remembering some funny lines ala Depp, and loved the eccentricity of this vampires view of the modern world. in fact she didn't stop talking about some great scenes for days!!
