Just having a quick look at tax credits to see if we'll get anything at all. Fair enough we earn too much and this government are wankers who are stripping the poor so I'd rather it go to someone very needy but what annoys me is my SIL is a resident of EU and therefore can live here and claim here enjoying a much longer maternity leave than I can dream of.

Presumably if she lives here and claims here, and is on mat leave, she also works here and pays taxes here?

She's on a low income, so she gets Tax Credits to help her with the cost of living. I don't see the problem with that.

Olympia2012 · 19/05/2012 15:31

Ah well.... Your little niece/nephew will benefit from it, so no problem really....is it?

Mrsjay · 19/05/2012 15:32

I assume your sister in law works here and is a low earner so entitled to her tax credits , i assume this is where she lives with her husband ?

Debeez · 19/05/2012 15:34

YABU. Ninthwave covered it.

cherrypieplum · 19/05/2012 15:35

Works part-time when not going on the sick and fully expects state support for everything. First words out of her mouth when I asked what she was doing for childcare: "The state will help". More to do with my attitude to her laziness but expectation to have everything on a plate than any 'coming over here, taking our jobs' thing.

Wants house, car, wedding with the works, etc however doesn't want to go back to work if she can help it.

Mrsjay · 19/05/2012 15:37

So in actual fact, her being an EU resident is completely irrelevant: what you resent is her personality coupled with the fact that she gets tax credits and you don't (presumably because you are earning too much).

Or do you mean she can live her and British people can't? Or she can get tax credits here and British people on similarly low wages can't? Or British people cannot and never do claim similar rebates in other EU countries.

Would you like me to tell you about the amazing system of tax credits in Sweden? I used to know quite a few Brits who lived there.

ilovesooty · 19/05/2012 15:44

You don't like her much do you?

cherrypieplum · 19/05/2012 15:49

I'm trying Ilovesooty. Really am.

Maybe her being EU resident is irrelevant. Just hate it when anyone expects the world on a plate and doesn't want to work.

HappyMummyOfOne · 19/05/2012 15:54

Your brother allows her to act that way though, if he disagreed with the state paying for his child or the fact his wife is lazy he could change the situation.

Olympia2012 · 19/05/2012 15:54

She is only getting what others get though..

And you yourself 'expected' it when you went in tax credit website to see if you were 'entitled' to anything!!

Cluffyfunt · 19/05/2012 15:56

So your hardworking BIL is against the claim for TC then?

kilmuir · 19/05/2012 15:58

Yabvu.

MustControlFistOfDeath · 19/05/2012 16:01

She wants stuff! How very dare she. Shock

Has she got a plasma tv and a goat?

MustControlFistOfDeath · 19/05/2012 16:03

Maybe her being EU resident is irrelevant

Yes it is irrelevant. Seems to piss you off though OP

I don't see why she should work if she wants to be a stay home mum and your BIL is working and happy about it.

Mrsjay · 19/05/2012 16:28

if you BIl is working what is wrong with her staying at home with the baby ? millions of parents do it whats wrong with her doing it ,

Mrsjay · 19/05/2012 16:29

I dont work and got a little bit of tax credits i am not lazy or entitled

mumeeee · 19/05/2012 16:44

YABU, It doesn't mean she is lazy if she doesn't want to go back to work. I stayed at home when my children were small because that is what we thought was best for the children.
