Just having a quick look at tax credits to see if we'll get anything at all. Fair enough we earn too much and this government are wankers who are stripping the poor so I'd rather it go to someone very needy but what annoys me is my SIL is a resident of EU and therefore can live here and claim here enjoying a much longer maternity leave than I can dream of.

I stay at home with DC whilst DP works his arse off and we also get a bit of tax credits. And we are also saving for our wedding. Does it mean just because we get tax credits, we can't want or get married? Hmm

TheUnMember · 19/05/2012 17:27

I live in Sweden. Want me to tell you about the benefits I get being an EU citizen?

UrbanPrincess · 19/05/2012 17:30

There is far too much emphasis on what other people get rather than concentrating on our own lives at the moment.

The obviously qualify for tax credits so why shouldn't they claim them?

Bucharest · 19/05/2012 17:33

What are these tax credits of which you speak....

I must return forthwith and milk the system.

I've just been allowed to vote for the mayor for the first time despite living here and paying mah taxes for 18 yrs.

mrsscoob · 19/05/2012 17:47

Why don't you give up your job or take a really low paid one then you could claim tax credits aswell! You wouldn't have to be jealous then Grin

looktoshinford · 19/05/2012 17:57

"Maybe her being EU resident is irrelevant"

Of course its relevant.

If millions of EU folk weren't here claiming benefits, there would be far more money for people already here. There would be no need for "government are wankers who are stripping the poor" statements because the welfare bill wouldn't be out of control.

Oakmaiden · 19/05/2012 18:01

You know, when I first read your post looktoshinford, I thought you were being ironic.

And then I reread it, and now want to just laugh at you.

redexpat · 19/05/2012 18:01

Is she from a country with a big govt?

looktoshinford · 19/05/2012 18:02

Cheers oakmaiden.

Hope the cuts are cutting :)

EU citizens can't claim benefits. Right to freedom of movement is dependent on being able to support yourself. Unless that EU citizen or their spouse is working and paying taxes, in which case they get treated the same as other tax payers.

Oakmaiden · 19/05/2012 18:06

Nice Hmm

I hoped you were going to come back and say "of course I was being ironic"

Instead you were just being intolerant - and gullible (millions of EU folk here claiming benefits??? Don't think so!).

WorraLiberty · 19/05/2012 18:08

That's funny OP

You resent your SIL claiming it but yet you looked to see if you could claim it yourself!

looktoshinford · 19/05/2012 18:09

Yeah no doubt it says that in some dusty economic agreement somewhere TheUnMember.

MainlyMaynie · 19/05/2012 18:16

Hahahaha at the idea that any EU citizen looking around for a place to go for a nice long maternity leave and financial subsidies for families would choose the UK.

LineRunner · 19/05/2012 18:23

OP why can't you have the maternity leave you would like?

looktoshinford · 19/05/2012 18:26

Maternity leave maybe, but the other benefits certainly.

MainlyMaynie · 19/05/2012 18:29

looktoshinford, are you sure you know what you're talking about? It doesn't sound like it.

Oakmaiden · 19/05/2012 18:29
monkeymoma · 19/05/2012 18:31

I'm european, I don't get a higher earning threashold within which I can claim TCs than you do OP so sod off!

Did you know that goats are not native to Britain. They come from Eastern Europe. I kid you not. Bloody immigrants.

LineRunner · 19/05/2012 18:39

Humans evolved in Africa.

PickledFanjoCat · 19/05/2012 18:57

How does she get longer maternity leave then? Does she get a special European grant that I haven't heard off, or exactly the same as you?

NinthWave · 19/05/2012 18:59

LOL UnMember
