to make sure the house is clean and tidy before we go away on holiday

DH is having a paddy about me "wanting to come back to a show home"
And although I think that would be an overestimation, I do always feel wierd coming home when we have spent time in amazing places. Therefore I want to house to look it's best, rather than a pit when we walk in.

I want that holiday feeling to last 12 hours at least before i have to trip over lego or pick up stuff from the floor.

I am not talking about redecorating, just making sure there aren't cups that need washing and straightenng beds and cushions etc.

Before we go I will tidy the boys toys away in their rooms so they aren't scattered around.

Apparently I am being unreasonable.

I will let the MN jury decide and accept my fate and Whatever your opinions I will share them with DH so we can together see if IABU.

I couldn't agree more. Who wants to come back to a mess when they are tired after the journey?

GreyskullsInBed · 18/05/2012 17:27

Yay one to me!!

emblosion · 18/05/2012 17:27

YANBU I do this too. Hate coming back to mess.

WorraLiberty · 18/05/2012 17:27

I don't think it's any of his business as long as you're not nagging him to help you.

eeden · 18/05/2012 17:28

YANBU. A family generates huge amounts of washing whilst away. Anything domestic that has arisen whilst you are away also has to be sorted out. It seems silly to come back to a mess/cleaning to do on top of all that, if it can be avoided. I try to leave the house tidy when we go on holiday, but don't always manage!

Posterofapombear · 18/05/2012 17:28

I'm with you, I loath coming back anyway so a stray coffee cup can tip me over the edge Grin

mumblechum1 · 18/05/2012 17:28

I always tidy up, as you say, it's depressing enough coming home from holiday withut going from luxury to mess.

I draw the line at what my firend does, which is wash all the windows inside and out. I do make sure the fridge is empty, everywhere's tidy, beds made etc.

ShatnersBassoon · 18/05/2012 17:29

I think most people like to get back to a nice tidy, comfortable home.

GrimmaTheNome · 18/05/2012 17:29

My DH is like you except its me who hass to do most of the tidying not him so HIBU Grin

It is nice to come back to a tidy house though, and some things are no-brainers - all the washing-up done and bins emptied.

thestringcheesemassacre · 18/05/2012 17:30

Oh yes, it's so nice coming back to clean home.
We always change sheets on the beds too so they are nice and fresh.

hadagutsfull · 18/05/2012 17:30

YANBU - everything tidy, bleach down the toilet, bleach in sink etc Would hate to come back to mess - it's bad enough having to empty cases, sort washing etc without having the place cluttered before you start Grin

Totally with you on this and do it myself. In addition to that I have someone coming in to see to the post and I wouldn't like them to see it.

MrsPresley · 18/05/2012 17:33

YADNBU

I go on holiday tomorrow and have spent all day cleaning.

I dont want to come back and think "what a mess".

I want to come home and at least have a coffee in comfort before I start on the mountain of washing I will be bringing home.

rubyslippers · 18/05/2012 17:34

I totally get this

Even if we go away for a weekend I do this

Stinky rubbish or

iago · 18/05/2012 17:34

I always clean and tidy before I go on holiday
a) because I'd be embarrassed if we were burgled and the police made sympathetic comments about the mess the burglars made and I'd be thinking they'd actually done a bit of tidying up
and b) if the plane crashed and we perished I'd be mortified Grin that my children would discover how messy I was after all those years of nagging them to tidy their rooms!

rubyslippers · 18/05/2012 17:34

Pressed post too soon - or plates in the sink is yuck

Also an empty laundry basket as we always bring back laundry from our hols

CupsofTeaAndHandfulsOfCake · 18/05/2012 17:35

YaNbu.
I always clean before we go on holiday. When we come back it feels like we live in a perfectly clean and tidy house for an hour

ChangingForTheBetter · 18/05/2012 17:36

Yanbu

suzikettles · 18/05/2012 17:36

Yanbu. It horrible coming home to a mess - kills the holiday feeling stone dead.

sugarice · 18/05/2012 17:37

I always change the bedding, wash and iron any clothes in basket then hoover through before we leave.

CointreauVersial · 18/05/2012 17:37

YANBU.

So depressing coming back to a grubby house.

Went away for two weeks once, and one of the DCs had forgotten to flush the loo. The smell....

thisisyesterday · 18/05/2012 17:37

yanbu at al!
it's horrid walking through the door to a messy house

(personally i always used to pay the cleaner to come in while we were away!!)

GreyskullsInBed · 18/05/2012 17:39

I remember Kim from Kim and Aggie saying she hoovered herself out of the door when she went on holiday. Grin now I do it. Blush

It would be a serious downer to come back to a shit tip. Sad
