to make sure the house is clean and tidy before we go away on holiday

DH is having a paddy about me "wanting to come back to a show home"
And although I think that would be an overestimation, I do always feel wierd coming home when we have spent time in amazing places. Therefore I want to house to look it's best, rather than a pit when we walk in.

I want that holiday feeling to last 12 hours at least before i have to trip over lego or pick up stuff from the floor.

I am not talking about redecorating, just making sure there aren't cups that need washing and straightenng beds and cushions etc.

Before we go I will tidy the boys toys away in their rooms so they aren't scattered around.

Apparently I am being unreasonable.

I will let the MN jury decide and accept my fate and Whatever your opinions I will share them with DH so we can together see if IABU.

This is something I always aim for but rarely achieve. I do usually manage to leave an empty washing basket though, and all the basics like emptying perishables from fridge, washing up, cleaning loos emptying bins, will have been done.

I also change the sheets - it's not just the niceness of clean ones when you get back, it's the fact that getting a slot to put the dirty ones in the washing machine will be tricky for a good few days.

More power to you if you can manage to clear the clutter as well.

Blatherskite · 18/05/2012 17:43

YANBU. There is always a huge mountian of washing to do once you get home plus 2 weeks of dust, why add any more mess to the job especially when you're tired after a long journey

Sparklingbrook · 18/05/2012 17:44

Plus when you bring the holiday washing back, you don't want to have a pile already.

I also wash the hoover filter, so it can dry while we are away.

Mrsjay · 18/05/2012 17:45

I always tidy before i go away i hate to come back to a mess , and when jaycat was here a neighbour would come in and feed her i didnt want her seeing the tip we usually live in Grin

Debeez · 18/05/2012 17:45

YANBU - Another one for you!

DontCallMeBaby · 18/05/2012 17:46

What is it to him if you want it clean and tidy? Are you cracking the whip and making him do it all? Sighing every time he put something down? If not YADNBU. I love the idea of coming home to a clean tidy house but never actually manage it. If DH was scurrying around tidying (instead of packing THE ENTIRE HOUSE) I'd be bloody delighted.

takingiteasy · 18/05/2012 17:47

You are so not bu!!!

Nice idea, but in my life I'm doing well to sort everything to go on holiday - maybe I'll manage it when the kids are older. cancelling the milk and chucking any clothes about into a basket is about as far as I get. Better to depart in a more relaxed frame of mind than stay up late tidying, IMO.

babybythesea · 18/05/2012 17:50

Nope, I'm the same. There's enough to do when you get home as it is - unpacking, washing, shopping etc etc. You really don't need to be trying to tidy up mess before you can even get round to the unpacking, or cleaning up dirty plates before you can eat.

CremeEggThief · 18/05/2012 17:54

YA Sooo NBU!

I'm jealous though that some of you achieve much more than I do! I manage to vacuum throughout, basic clean of the bathrooms, make sure everything is tidy and in its place and most of the washing is done.

LadyofWinterfell · 18/05/2012 17:57

We go away in 2 weeks, and MIL is having the DCs the day before so i can clean and pack the car! :o

Lulumama · 18/05/2012 17:59

you are definitely NBU !

I leave beds made, kitchen table and surfaces clean and clear, dishwasher unloaded and things generally in order.

it's so depressing even to come home from a day out and the house is a tip

HeidiHole · 18/05/2012 17:59

YADNBU I hate walking back into a tip even though normally it is one, but seeing a tip after a nice holiday is so much worse than just seeing one day to day!

I always tidy and clean (so does DH because I whip and nag him) before we leave.

CremeEggThief · 18/05/2012 18:00

Tip for washing, if anyone is interested- if you haven't got a washing machine where you're staying, find a launderette that does service washes a couple of days before you travel home. We've been doing this for years and it works really well. I think I may have sent DH to do the laundry, once or twice, when he was getting on my nerves when a launderette was self-service only.

AllPastYears · 18/05/2012 18:02

Completely agree. (On the other hand, my DH agrees with your DH so I'm not sure what that proves...)

theinets · 18/05/2012 18:03

We always tidy and clean our place thoroughly before we go away and even wash clothes on holiday so we don't come back to any, or minimal washing to do either. Half an hour's unpacking after we walk in the door and that's it - coffee in hand, slumped on sofa , tripping with jetlag to Trisha or similar - bliss.

feelinghappynow · 18/05/2012 18:03

YANBU - hate going to somewhere lovely that gets cleaned all the time then walk back into a messy house.

I always factor in £20-30 in the holiday budget for a trip to the laundarette when we return too - worth every penny to dump case loads and pick up 2 hours later and clean, dry and folded Grin

shopping81 · 18/05/2012 18:09

Yanbu. Always aspire to leaving house vlean, tidy and clutter free. Doesn't quite work that way though.

kinkynagbag · 18/05/2012 18:10

dnbu. i have to do this.

its just so much nicer to come back to clean and tidy house.. rather then opening the door and be thinking fuck.. i have to do that this and that :(

i went away last year to my sisters, and my boyfriend cat.house sat for me. i tidyied it, but didnt expect it to be h ow it was when i l eft it as he was staying there.. but i got alovely surrpise when i got back and hed tidied, made beds and even left me some fags and chocolate for me. he got the its nice to come back to a clean place to :)

have fun on ya hoildays to :)

Longtalljosie · 18/05/2012 18:11

Get a cleaner. Leave payment on the kitchen table. Return to sparkling house...

DontHaveAtv · 18/05/2012 18:13

YANBU I like a nice tidy home when I come back from holiday. I always tidy up before I go out for the day too. Not to the extent of decluttering, but hate coming home to washing up and general mess.

Astr0naut · 18/05/2012 18:13

We tidy.

Although one of us once left a wee in the toilet. Neither of us ever claimed responsibility, and I genuinely can't remember (although it had been me, there would have been toilet paper too, wouldn't there?).

It wasn't a pleasant smell to return to.

LadyPeterWimsey · 18/05/2012 18:14

Is that a unanimous YANBU? Grin

My DH felt the same as yours until one time I didn't clean, we came home, and he felt the instant downer. Nothing spoils the effect of the holiday more than coming home to an untidy house.

LadyPeterWimsey · 18/05/2012 18:15

Oh yes, and when I had a cleaner I would get her to come while we were away. No such luck now.
